Replacing a Passat estate

I have been thinking of changing my current Passat estate 2.0 TDi (140) and have been told that no-one buys the petrol versions and that the depreciation on them is 50% worse than on the diesel models. I now do less than 10k miles a year and so was thinking the 1.8 TSI sport would be a better option, but am I going to end up with a car that no-one else wants when I come to sell it? What would be a sensible alternative in similar size and spec?
