Heater covered by warranty on a Passat?

My 2008 VW Passat had a heater motor replaced by previous owner 2 years ago and now this has failed and VW say it is not covered under warranty, even though its just 2 years old.

I believe this should be replaced free of charge but VW say they might offer a small discount on the £634 cost of the repair.
Would welcome your comments or a request for more information if you think this would help your assessment.

A replacement under warranty is not itself warranted beyond the original warranty on the car. Spate of problems with the 2005-2011 Passat but this is the first I've heard of heater motor failure. Will add to the list.
