Buying a new small car

I have £12000 to spend on a car (either new or "recently new"). My main requirements are the school run and going to the shops each about 12 miles from where I live. Occasionally, I will go on a longer trip to either the West Country or the northern regions of France. What car(s) do you recommend?

Finally, my present car is a "beat-up" Citroen C5; what is the best way of selling it?

Mazda 2 1.3TS2. Lots of fun with low running costs and you shold get some change from your £12k. Try to p/x the nearly valueless C5.
