Downsizing from a V8 Jaguar

I've just moved back to full time employment after working for myself for the last 9 years.

I'll be doing a 60 mile round trip every day and need to replace my S Type R - 4.2 litres of V8 just isn't going to cut the mustard on that journey!

I'm looking for a Fiesta sized car, it needs to have four doors for the two kids and two dogs. It must have good fuel economy and be fun to drive.

I have about £8000-£9000 so it will most probably be a used car, but I'd like as low mileage as possible. I have thought about the Fiesta which I like the looks of and I believe is fun to drive and reliable. I'm not too sure which engine to go for though and whether petrol or diesel.

Any other contenders out there? I'm not a badge snob so it doesn't have to be German!

Mazda is currently selling its Mazda 2 models very cheaply. The best of the range is the 1.3TS2. Huge fun to drive. Better than a Fiesta. Just not as fancily trimmed inside.
