Which TSI engine will be the most efficient?

I want a Golf hatch, and can't pick between the 85PS 1.2, the 105PS 1.2 and the 122PS 1.4.

If I drove each car equally gently; could I expect to approach the 1.2 TSI 85 PS fuel economy with the more powerful engines?

Would I be correct in assuming that when the Govt. Assesses fuel consumption do they test the engine CO2 out put at say 70% of full power for overtaking and generally brisker driving for the more powerful engines?

If so it seems logical that with careful driving you could generally expect to improve the mpg figures on the more powerful models.

Why do I ask? The local Volkswagen Dealer says the S Match is in a sweet spot and he can get a good selection of second hand cars.

I think my favourite, being retired is either the 1.2 TSI 85 Ps or the 1.2 TSI 105 PS

You will have to work the 85PS hard for it to move at all, so the 105 might actually prove more economical in real life. See how they fare in the various VWs, Skodas, SEATs and Audis in www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg
