Can you suggest a good car for my needs?

I am a 33yr old female who has owned her Peugeot 207 for 10 years. Sadly it's increasingly creaky and temperamental after a life of good service. I have a 10k budget to buy something new.

I don't drive everyday but tend to make one long journey a week of a couple of hundred miles or so. I don't want a large car, I like my current 3 door Peugeot but would like just a little more space if possible.

I was thinking about a second hand diesel BMW 1 Series but am wondering if there are makes I haven't thought of that would be worth considering.

I am looking for something reliable, that will age well, is fuel efficient and with a little bit of class. Please help me negotiate the bewildering array of cars out there!

My favourite car in this class remains the Mazda 2 1.3TS2, which has been £30 tax for about a year now.
