Trailer for sale or tent?

This is slightly left field of your normal motoring advice but I would like your opinion on how to tackle this problem. In brief I bought a Raclet trailer tent 14 years ago from new and on average I take it out about 3 times a year camping.

It is garaged when not in use, but yesterday I was moving it in the garage when it collapsed on one side, with what appears to be metal fatigue.

I regularly check around the trailer before taking it out and was shocked when it collapsed, the thought of this happening at 60mph doesn't bear thinking about. The trailer relies on the brakes from the car, so as such does not require servicing of any description, provided you keep the electrics and tyres/wheels in good order. I am in the process of contacting Raclet to order new parts, but what about all the other Raclet and trailer tents out there which could possibly suffer from the same catastrophic failure such as mine if it is metal fatigue.

Why might have this happened, and am I at fault somehow? I have posted a comment on the Raclet owners web site to at least draw peoples attention to this problem, and will shortly be advising the Camping and Caravan Club who produce a monthly magazine.

In a simple welded frame structure owners can expect corrosion both of the frame itself and of the welded joints. I suspect that a lot of summer caravan catastrophes are similarly caused. Caravans and trailers should all be plated and subject to an annual MoT that includes a frame, tyres and brakes check.
