Winning at cards

The Mrs and I are looking to buy a new car and we went to look at the new Lexus models. The salesman was very nice and informative and we got chatting, when a guy in trainers and tracksuit and dripping in bling came into the showrooms. He was quite noisy and flash but not in an unpleasant way. To cut a long story short the flashy bling guy was a top footballer for a Premier League club, Chelsea actually, and he bought a Lexus Hybrid for his dad. The bling guy got out a black American Express card and said he wanted to pay for the car with it. The salesman we were talking to said that was the first time anyone had asked to pay by credit card and apparently the showroom manager said to bling man, "that's no problem at all sir. “ The manager telephoned American Express and said that he had a customer that wanted to buy a Lexus by credit card. After a little while American Express gave immediate authorisation and told the showroom manager that they would give the garage preferential rates when it came to charging for the use of the card on this deal, and also they would send the customer a top of the range Harrods hamper. I wonder what the credit card companies reaction would have been if an ordinary man in the street wanted to buy a £50,000 Lexus with his credit card? Have you ever come across this type of thing?

An American Express card is not a credit card. It is a charge card, paid off by direct debit every month. A black Amex card has a much higher limit on it, and the phone call was enough to establish the credentials of the footballer's account. Amazing what some people can earn from kicking a ball around.
