Can you recommend a workhorse vehicle that will carry five people in comfort, traverse floods and tow a 1.5-ton trailer?

Now that the family have left home my wife and I do almost all our motoring in our MINI Clubman (with which we are well pleased). But I still have our trusty 12-year-old Volvo estate for the relatively infrequent occasions when we need to carry passengers in comfort. I also have a 1989 Land Rover 110 diesel that I use almost exclusively for my (semi-retired self employed) work on the nearby river which is prone to flooding. Both Land Rover and Volvo are getting a bit 'long in the tooth' and as neither of them now covers more than 5,000 miles annually, economics dictate that I replace them with a single vehicle.

Can you suggest something that will cope with multiple short journeys, some of which may be through water up to a couple of feet or so deep, can carry up to five people in comfort OR the tools and equipment of my trade, and will safely tow a trailer of up to 1.5 tons? Budget is not hugely critical but I would prefer to buy something a year or two old. I have been warned off modern Land Rovers due to the vulnerability of their electronics in anything much more than a foot of water; is this right?

I'd look at a pick up, such as an Isuzu Rodeo 2.5 or 3.0 I-TEQ or maybe a Mitsubishi L200. But if they have diesel particulate filters they won't take kindly to repeated short runs from cold. No diesel with a particulate filter will. And there really aren't many economical 4WD petrol SUVs. The Toyota RAV4 2.0 Valvematic is probably the best.
