DPF problem in a Volkswagen Transporter

My 59 Volkswagen Transporter is very lumpy at tickover, is hesitatant to accelerate and smells 'hot.'

Dealer says I should live with it! I'm not so sure, what do you think?

The hot smelling with be the diesel particulate filter trying to regenerate. You might be able to sort it out by taking it for a 50 mile run, keeping it above 2,000rpm.
