Car for less than £4,000

I currently drive an 02 plate Mazda 6 2.0 petrol auto. I do 25k a year, 80% on A-roads and motorways. I average 36mpg in the Mazda with careful driving.

I am looking for a manual with decent fuel economy (maybe 42-45mpg on a run?). because of my budget, any diesel I buy will most likely need some major work around the corner so looking at petrol models. Which of the below should I go for?

Accord
Mazda 6 (1.8 or 2.0?)
Mazda 3 sport
BMW 318i
BMW 320i

Also - what is yout take on a facelifted (06) Vectra with the 3.0 v6 Izuzu diesel? I havent seen many reports of problems with these so perhaps also worth a look?

Reliability is paramount here which is why I'm edging towards Jap cars. I intend on keeping the car for at least 2 years - or possibly run it till it dies on me.

Mazda 3 1.6, Mondeo III 1.8 or 2.0, or C-Max 1.8 petrol, but 42 - 45 is a bit optimistic. Almost no feedback on Vectra or Signum 3.0V6 diesel. Same engine fitted to SAAB 9-5s.
