Can you recommend a used car for a new driver?

My son who is 43 has just passed his test in a Ford Fiesta and is looking to buy a car. Having passed his test in a Fiesta he understandably wants a Fiesta. He has up to £5,000 to spend and 60,000 miles max. Have you any thoughts on the Fiesta or other small car that he can consider?

The Fiesta's a great little car that's ideal for new drivers. There are loads on the used market, too, so your son can be picky about finding the right one for him. We'd recommend one with the reliable (and cheap-to-run) 1.25-litre petrol engine. A full service history, including a timing belt change, is desirable.
