Do tyres have an age life?

Car tyres do not have a legal age limit but your vehicle may fail the MoT if the tester sees signs of structural failure. Many tyre manufacturers advise tyre replacement at 10 years.

The rubber compound of the tyre will break down over time and become brittle. This creates cracks in the sidewall and will compromise the waterproof qualities of the tyre. UV light will accelerate the ageing process, which means cars left outside for long periods are vulnerable to age-related tyre wear.

The symbols on the side of the tyre make it easy to identify the date the tyre was built, as detailed here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/wheels-and-tyres/tyre-buying-.../
