Will I notice a big drop in torque if I switch from a diesel car to a petrol car?

I'm thinking of changing from diesel to petrol and notice that the current trend at my end of the market is towards 1.0 or 1.2-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol vehicles. I normally keep my cars until the wheels are the size of shirt buttons so I am concerned about the longevity and reliability of 3-cylinder engines. Also, my current engine is 1.5dci, would I notice a large drop in torque, flexibility etc? I realise a test drive would highlight some of the latter but I am interested in your thoughts on these matters.

I'd expect you'd notice a slight drop off in torque, but a three-cylinder petrol will have a much broader rev range than your diesel which should make up for it. I have heard some three-cylinder engines having a short life span, but seen no proof that this is down to their configuration. Once you have a shortlist of cars, I'd advise researching online which models have had problems reported.
