Must be choking

We have a 2008 Zafira 1.9CDTi automatic and every few weeks its warning light comes on to say we need to get it to a Vauxhall dealer. The handbook says the fault is with either the diesel particulate filter and/or the transmission electronics, but it drives with no noticeable difference. The first couple of times I took the car for a long motorway run and left it overnight. That cleared the problem, but this time the light came on after a motorway run and doesn't want to clear itself. There's also a strong diesel smell once the car has been run and the engine stopped. I'm concerned as we have four children (youngest 1 year) and this is "mum's taxi" so needs to be reliable and not always at our local dealer. I see from your website that the DPF is a well-known problem but do you have any other suggestions as to what this might be? And after just 14,000 miles in 14 months, increasingly in town driving, have I bought a pup? If so, would the petrol, manual version be a better option?

You simply have to drive it regularly on the motorway, locking it in 4th
on the autobox to keep the revs up and get the DPF to regenerate. The engine emissions system is totally unsuited to the use to which you are putting it and you should have been warned. A petrol engine would have been less trouble and would have used less fuel.

I have read your general advice. Can you advise how the regeneration of the DPF in a Freelander 2 works? Does it regenerate anyway when one goes on a long drive or will it wait until it is partly clogged...
You recommend running at higher revs to help a DPF to regenerate. I drive a Volvo V70 AWD 2.4d. At 2,000 rpm I travel at 60 mph. At 2,300 rpm I travel at 70 mph. How do you suggest I exceed the speed limit...
