What would be a dealer's comeback if someone sold him a car that has missed a service and needed a reconditioned engine to be fitted at two and a half years old? If the car was serviced just before the sale and the person says 'it was serviced just over a week ago' (conveniently forgetting the missed service). What would be the worst that could happen? Is it important to mention the reconditioned engine, or is it the dealer’s responsibility to check such things, including full service history?

It's the dealer's responsibility to check. But if the dealer asks and the vendor lies, then the vendor is liable.
