Piping down

In October 2008 I bought a new Honda Jazz 1.2 having studied the literature given by the Honda dealer with particular reference to the fact (so I was told) that this car would qualify for a low road tax rating in 2009. I was not pleased to receive word from the DVLA this month that my road tax renewal would be at the normal higher rate. I queried this with them, with Honda UK and the salespeople only to be told that while Honda advertised this car to be in the low emission class in the summer, when the car actually came out in October the emission rate exceeded UK ruling. As this was a major factor in my choice of a new car I feel very annoyed at this but it seems there is no way of avoiding paying the full rate. So much for Honda's quote in their brochure 'we want to fill the world with great ideas, not pollution'. I am sure there must be others who feel they have been misled in this way

Honda originally promised both at the summer pre-launch and at the autumn launch that the new Jazz 1.2 and also the 1.4 i-shift would be below 121g/km CO2. But Honda considers itself to have been a bit more honest in its CO2 testing of the car than other manufacturers and it failed to certificate them below 121g/km. That's why the tax is £120 instead of £35. But, at least, it drops to £90 next year. However, cars are now being tested for ‘in-service’ emissions up to 62,500 miles and if significant numbers of them do not continue to meet their certificated emissions levels the manufacturers who have certificated their cars artificially low may suffer penalties.
