Carnapped

I have had a second vehicle stolen in Derbyshire and whilst I was in the process of sending an email to the police requesting them not to use their contract vehicle recovery scheme, a knock came at the door from two Police Support Officers. They informed me that my vehicle had been found and recovered to Derby. The vehicle had been found within three hours of being reported stolen, less than two hundred yards from my house. The Road Traffic Act 1984 and the Removal and Disposal of Vehicles Regulations 1986 relate to vehicles which have been deliberately abandoned by their owners and the removal and storage fees are deliberately punitive to discourage this practise. Both of these laws also allow a period of time for the vehicle owners to remove them. To use these laws in relation to stolen vehicles is nothing less than a moneymaking scam. I cannot "pass on" the costs incurred to an insurance company because the vehicles were only insured for third party liability due to their low value; I did not consider the cost of buying them back from the police in my calculations. I thought I paid my taxes to cover the cost of policing. Are any other victims of crime expected to pay in this way?

I saw the letter in the Telegraph on a plane today. I agree, it is plainly ridiculous when a car is held to ransom. Another reader's car was recovered, he offered to collect it, but they said no, they needed the car for forensics. They then held it for four days and charged him a storage fee for the four days they held the car. Beggers belief.
