gear selection

golf mk3 1.4 man. car would start & drive off ok, but would sometimes jam in gear (clutch would operate but gearlever would not pull out of geaR), if car was stopped gear could be used normally. When car working ok clutchless changes can be made but not when fault occurs. Checked car out found fitting clip on clutch cable still clipped, unfastened it & checked gearlinkage for clearance. Fault cleared for a few weeks but has reappeared with a few changes. Car whilst stat with engine running & in gear 1 or rev. clutch depressed, if clutch let out engine will stall. Gearlever remains stuck in gear & car does NOT move. If engine turned off gearlever still stuck & if starter used car does not move & starter only clonks engine (but the shock of this clears fault & car can be used).

Reads like a faulty self adjustor on the clutch cable. Fit a new cable entirely. Also the release arm may be bent. That makes the clutch operation very heavy.
