In 2002 I bought a 1-year old dealer certified Toyota Avensis 1.8 petrol auto. Drove it for 11 years. It was an unbelievable experience. Went like this... An oil change, some filters, new brakepads, then again an oil change plus new oil in the gearbox, then new brakepads, new filters, new gas for the AC, some little things in front suspension (but not the shocks). Then brakepads and so on... It felt bulletproof and actually was bulletproof. Never ever missed a beat. Never left me stranded. So after 11 years I went the same route and bought another new shape Avensis again, also 1.8 petrol auto. And history repeated itself, just like before, regular maintenance and fuel. I still drive it to this day. Original shocks, original autobox, original everything. Never left me stranded. So now it's only natural that I look at that RAV4. The Passat-thing would be like a romance during an old marriage. I like the way it looks both inside & outside, just haven't tried it yet. It's a bit more expensive to buy and yes I am aware it might cost me more in the long run. Fortune favours the bold? It's a model 3 so has plenty of toys and a panoramic roof which makes the interior very airy and light. We have no worries about it being deisrable as a trade in, especially as Autos seem so popular at present and its petrol and ULEZ compliant so no issues on that score. It's also only got 56K on it so plenty of life for any next owner. The problem is my wife is disabled and whatever we move to we'd like to be able to run her electric wheel chair straight into the boot (using a ramp), while keeping it as a 5 seater. Currently I have to lift it into the Venga, but I'm getting older and a 30kg lift with a 90 degree twist to put it across the boot is starting to take its toll. We did think of an electric hoist but they take up to much of the boot so don't work for us with what other things we have to carry around. The chair is 40 inches in length when folded. We have tried usual suspects like Qashqai / Tucson / Sportage  / RAV4 and despite them being "chunky" and looking massive , the boots are disappointingly small lengthways in 5 seater mode. We additionally need auto (preferably a torque converter), petrol as we only do 4k a year, ideally a cam chain engine as my wife had a cam belt "let go" rather spectacularly in the past and mentally it is block for her to go back to cam belt. And driver seat must be able to raise to 70cm from ground. Having checked the usual suspects and trawled a few car lots, I keep ending up back at import vans like a Stepwagon / Elysion / Vellfire / Alphard / Estima which mechanically share many parts with UK models but its the trim / bodywork / glass that can be tricky from what the forums say. ie: a windscreen issue can effectively write off an otherwise good van. Budget is £10K plus the Venga, preferably newer than a 12 plate.   If anyone can think of UK alternates that fit the bill then let me know.    Motoring discussion VengaPete Motoring discussion http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=199229 http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=199229&v=t&m=1495034 Passat or RAV4 - VW or Toyota (badbusdriver) hjforum1495033 Fri, 08 Nov 2024 21:24:59 +0000 That may be but to drive it feels rather large especially re width. Saying that re Mrs BJ the Passat had been ruled out for us as well re size! The RAV4 is pretty broad, that (unfortunately IMO) is just the way these days. But assuming the OP is looking the "new" (2024 on) Passat, it is only 6mm narrower than the RAV4.  However the Passat and Rav 4 are very different vehicles in many ways. Both the Passat and Rav 4 need driving to compare in many driving settings - around town, twisty stuff and motorway speeds to see what floats your boat. The Rav 4 really should be compared to another SUV. Yeah it is an odd pairing, they are not "rivals", so I do wonder why only these two? The fact that you'd be buying new removes some degree of risk over the long term reliability concern of the Passat's DSG (assuming you drive sensibly), but I'd still be wary. It might not be too bad, but be in no doubt that the RAV4 will be more reliable, particularly once you get past 4-5 years.  Also, and I don't know if this is the case in Germany,  in the UK Toyota will extend the standard manufacturers warranty (annually) up to 10 years (assuming dealer serviced).  I realise that reliability surveys are not the be all and end all, but maybe worth bearing in mind that in the What Car reliability survey of 2024, the previous shape Passat was rated as the 2nd least reliable car in its category. Also that in overall reliability of the brand, VW came 18th (out of 31) whereas Toyota came 5th.    Motoring discussion badbusdriver Motoring discussion http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=199228 http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=199228&v=t&m=1495032 Passat or RAV4 - VW or Toyota (Big John) hjforum1495031 Fri, 08 Nov 2024 21:04:54 +0000 The Rav4 doesn't have as much interior space despite its dimensions.  The RAV4 is more than a foot shorter than the Passat, but its wheelbase is only 15cm shorter. Which certainly suggests the RAV4 has more interior space relative to its size than the Passat.  That may be but to drive it feels rather large especially re width. Not only is it one of the most reliable cars available at any price, but statistically much more reliable the Passat.  The current model of RAV4 has been in production since 2018, but the actual running gear including the hybrid system has been steadily developed and improved for much longer.  I'm also curious to know who told you the ride quality of the Passat would be much better than the RAV4?. I don't know one way or the other, but I do know that the RAV4 is not known for having a poor ride. Also, ride quality is, to a large degree, determined by the size of wheel and tyre fitted. So if ride quality is important, buy a lower spec car with smaller diameter wheels on tyres with a taller sidewall height.  Motoring discussion badbusdriver Motoring discussion http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=199228 http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=199228&v=t&m=1495026 Passat or RAV4 - VW or Toyota (Krugerrand) hjforum1495025 Fri, 08 Nov 2024 16:49:16 +0000 Hello everyone, Sorry for my bad English. Question is: What would you guys buy for your own money? For about 10 years of future motoring. I'm in Germany (and will be for a long time). Toyota here is not respected. That's why I can buy RAV4 Hybrid 4x4 with 1-year warranty for 35 000 EUR (29 051 British Pounds). It's a dealer certified 1-owner with 44 000 kilometers on the clock (27 340 miles). The car is just 2-years old with 1 year remaining original manufacturer warranty. Not bad I guess?   It's all I need, actually, with intelligent LED Matrix lights, heated seats front and rear, heated steering wheel and 222 horsepower. Looks kind of cheap both inside and outside, but hey, it's the legendary reliability that counts, right? It's proven technology after about 5 years of production, I guess. Add 3000 EUR (2489 British Pounds) to the above mentioned 35 000 EUR (29 051 British Pounds) and I can have a brand new VW Passat estate auto (DSG) with petrol 1.5 TSI that can easily de-activate 2 cylinders, so it needs not that much petrol, just like the RAV4 hybrid. Frankly, I don't now if that tech is proven, the whole car is just 6 months (?) in the production. It's really new and I'm afraid I might end up as a guinea pig here.   Obviously it's a much bigger car, I'm told it's as big and roomy as the BMW 5 series. Brand new, so the warranty lasts for 2 years (not 1 like the Toyota). It has all the things that RAV4 has plus other extras - ventilated seats, electrically adjusted, 3-zone Climatronic and HUD display. Looks expensive inside, excellent materials, fit and finish everywhere you look.   I have yet to test drive both cars, but I'm already told that the difference in ride quality, noise and vibration will be like day&night, in favour of the Passat, naturally. To be honest, that may be the deal breaker for me. So, dear people... Which one would you choose? If you are approaching the car with the heavy object/s already in your hands/arms, then yes, it would be easier to load them into a car with a higher boot floor (especially for a taller person). But if you are picking up those objects from the ground next to the car, I'm not sure many people would consider the extra height to which they are having lift the heavy objects advantageous!. After having a bad back, I would rather lift something heavy into a car with a high floor. When you're lifting from the floor, you're prepared for the weight by tensing the muscles. The more you can straighten your back, the less load there is going to be on your spine. The danger point is when you are putting something heavy into a car with a lower floor because you have to bend down further, and that puts a lot more strain on the back. Couple that with losing concentration as you lean forward to try to position it, and it's luck of the draw whether you will come out of it laughing or a week of suffering. However, I would rather have an estate. With raised suspension. Unfortunately, they are thin on the ground and usually come with four wheel drive which raises the running costs. About the closest is a Dacia Jogger? If its economy and space you’re after then an estate car will suit better. Very much agree re SUVs, why? They tend to be heavier, shaped like a brick and have a smaller boot although head room can be excellent. Usually means compromise re performance/economy and handling/ride quality. Ideal if you own a caravan I suppose.  I'm biased as we still like camping for wimps (good weather and all the comforts) so a small estate is perfect and mine is averaging mid to late 60's  mpg (Suzuki Swace so Toyota hybrid gubbins). I did look at some SUV's as I was trying to find a compromise car that I fitted in well (6ft4") , had a big boot and Mrs BJ would like driving (she found my previous Superb a bit of a boat to drive), and was affordable (SUV's much more new/used).  The small estate won.   Motoring discussion Big John Motoring discussion http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=199223 http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=199223&v=t&m=1495010 SUV recommndation (Xileno) hjforum1495009 Thu, 07 Nov 2024 21:57:57 +0000 Possibly worth giving the Car Chooser a go, it might open up some ideas: https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/chooser/?a=&p=17000 Motoring discussion Xileno Motoring discussion http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=199223 http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=199223&v=t&m=1495009 SUV recommndation (SLO76) hjforum1495008 Thu, 07 Nov 2024 21:07:47 +0000 You’ll need more money. The biggest issue is the requirement for an auto. You can get a manual Hyundai Tucson 1.6 T-GDi SE for the money, but you’ll need £18k upwards for an approved used auto, and even at that they’re rare. The Honda CRV is too thirsty with the 1.5 petrol and a CVT box, plus there’s talk of reliability issues with this engine. The 2.0 non-turbocharged hybrid is a safer bet, but you’ll need more money. There’s loads of Toyota CH-Z Hybrids around for this budget, but they’re probably smaller inside than the Astra, though far far more reliable. The RAV4 Hybrid is good, but it’s not that big inside either and again you’ll need more money. The Mazda CX-5 can be had with an excellent torque converter auto and robust non-turbocharged petrol for the money, but you won’t average 45mpg and the autos are fairly hard to come by. The manuals are easy enough to find and it’s a lovely gearbox to use. I can’t recommend any VAG cars due to the unreliability of the DSG automated manual box, ditto any Ford fitted with the Powershift transmission. Wouldn’t touch anything French either, too many engine issues, and I include Nissan (Renault) in that, the X-trail is known to be fragile and ditto the smaller Qashqai, which is again no bigger inside than the Astra. Sit down and think what you really need from a car. Do you absolutely need an automatic SUV? If its economy and space you’re after then an estate car will suit better. The service desk says it was slightly low brake fluid and that set off the brake warning and that the SRS one was not live but due to a previous code saved by the system and representing when the brake one came up,  Maybe he or the receptionist have the wrong end of the stick but it sounds unlikely to me. Has anyone come across this? Do I maintain with dealer? (Will deBeast) hjforum1494996 Thu, 07 Nov 2024 16:41:34 +0000 Our local Mazda dealer is a family owned business.  I've met one of the owners a few times, and know that he goes out of his way to support his vulnerable customers.  I'd be very happy to pay a small premium to have my car serviced there. In your position, I'd just look around for a well-regarded local business. Not sure that is actually doable.  I can think of a couple that are of a similar size or slightly smaller, though not necessarily smaller inside, which (on paper anyway) could exceed 45mpg, but that would be dependant on usage. Do I maintain with dealer? (SLO76) hjforum1494970 Wed, 06 Nov 2024 12:43:41 +0000 I found our Mazda being advertised within a week at an independent small dealer local to the Suzuki dealer at over £4k. I was mildly surprised that, if intending to move it on locally, he hadn’t retained the invoices as part of his onward pitch. But again it shows the trade just want to keep it simple. I am sure most franchised dealers keep in touch with their local indy traders, who probably pay them their £2k (maybe a tad more) for your car, giving them a margin of £~2k to allow for haggling and the cost of any basic warranty they might offer (but probably don't).  Sounds about normal to me.  And of course some figures will be 'optimised' for the VAT man. Maybe SLO will give us the inside story ? I used to deal with our local Citroen and Daihatsu dealerships. Anything sub £2k that came in was my bread and butter. They told me what they needed and I said yes or no. I was a home trader so without a glass palace to boost prices I was working off a margin of between £500-£1000 usually. But when I was a salesman and buyer for a large multi-site dealership in the distant past we often had part-ex’s underwritten by other local dealers, particularly high end stuff that wasn’t our bag, or high risk stock like Land Rovers/Range Rovers. At the time Kia was a rather bland budget brand which we found hard work to sell, so we always had them underwritten by the nearby main dealer who took them off our hands at a price that gave them a margin and allowed us to offer better money than most rivals. Worked well for both of us. Do I maintain with dealer? (SLO76) hjforum1494969 Wed, 06 Nov 2024 12:37:41 +0000 On the assumption that it’s a petrol model then I’d use a well regarded local independent for servicing. Dealers are money grabbing via their service departments more than ever thanks to declining new car sales. There’s no value gain to be had on one of these from a main dealer history. Good cars, but keep an eye on rust underneath, if it’s a good car and you want to keep it longterm it’s worth spending a few hundred quid with a specialist having it undersealed. These are brilliant cars, the petrol motors are very robust and they’re a nice rice. Highly recommend. I reckon a full bundle of paperwork for a 10-year-old car will only interest a private buyer.  A trader will probably send the car straight to auction, and the bundle into the bin. Do I maintain with dealer? (catsdad) hjforum1494962 Wed, 06 Nov 2024 10:08:17 +0000 Our 2012 Mazda 3 had a full online service record which our generalist indie was able to update for the last three years of our ownership. When I traded it in at a Suzuki dealer last year the salesman kept only the print outs from online and wasn’t interested in my full sheaf of service and repair invoices. We only got £2k for it which was much the same as online sites. I doubt that an official dealer Mazda history would have got me more. My advice would be to stick with a good indie and if you can get it updated online then that’s a bonus but not essential for a car if that age.   Motoring discussion catsdad Motoring discussion http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=199220 http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=199220&v=t&m=1494962
