Volkswagen Passat (2015 – 2022) Review

Volkswagen Passat (2015 – 2022) At A Glance

4/5
Honest John Overall Rating
The latest Passat is impressive, with good levels of refinement and notable improvements in fuel economy and performance. However, in raising its game, Volkswagen has also raised the Passat's prices and this will alienate some buyers,

+Neat styling inside and out, fine quality, strong performance even from the entry-level engines, spacious interior and capacious boot for a saloon.

-The boot is big but the access is a bit tight being a saloon rather than a hatchback, range-topping models are in the price sphere of the best premium rivals, full range of engines currently not available.

Insurance Groups are between 12–29
On average it achieves 79% of the official MPG figure

The archetypal non-premium saloon, the Volkswagen Passat is a car that transcends its mainstream badge, offering buyers a car that has all the prestige of the recognised upmarket brands like BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz, without quite the price tag. It feels every inch the rival to such brands, too, yet, being a Volkswagen means it’s universally accepted. Nobody, absolutely nobody, will ever find a Passat offensive, or cast aspersions about your personality, other, perhaps, that you’re a fine human being. The Passat’s just a good, solid, sensible buy, though less so in saloon here, the far more popular estate model selling four times more in the UK than the saloon.

Looking for a second opinion? Read heycar's Volkswagen Passat review.

There isn’t a car manufacturer that doesn’t look at the enviable position the premium brands have at the top of the sales league with real envy.

Volkswagen comes closest to bridging the gap between those upmarket brands and the volume, mainstream ones, and the Passat is arguably the car that exemplifies that. A business, junior executive and family car that’s genuinely able to mentioned in the exalted company of the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and hold its own among such models, too.

The current Passatl can trace its roots to 2015, though keeping it up to date was a huge overall in 2020. Changes to it included a range of revised, more economical engines, improved technology, and, crucially these days, greater connectivity.

With such a wide audience to cater for Volkswagen offers the Passat with a wide range of engines, with petrol engines in capacities of 1.5 to 2.0-litres with outputs spanning 150PS to 272PS.

Diesels have long been a Passat-buyer’s heartland, though, and that’s usually been reflected in the range of turbodiesel engines you can buy it with, the capacities being either 1.6 or 2.0-litres with power ranging from 120PS to double that with the range-topping car.

There are manual and automatic choices, and there’s even a four-wheel drive in the more powerful models, it standard on the range-topping ones. There’s even a plug-in hybrid for those who want to dodge tax and help the environment, it different enough to warrant its own test, which you’ll find here…

Even if you don’t opt for the plug-in hybrid there’s every chance that your Passat will be bought with company money, Volkswagen admitting as many as 80% of Passat sales go through a business’s profit and loss accounts.

That’s entirely understandable given its status, this classless, classy saloon that you’d be more than happy to give to your staff, and, likewise, the staff will be more than happy to own and drive. The range encompasses a broad salary sweep, too, with junior management certain to be pleased with the SE or SE Nav, SEL and R-Line models adding a bit of extra equipment and class for the higher fliers in the company.

There’s more equipment in all following the 2020 revisions, it safer too, thanks to the addition of Volkswagen’s latest driver aids, the Travel Assist system on some allowing a degree of autonomy when driving on the motorway.

The estate might be the bigger seller, and more sensible, but the Passat saloon’s a classy car, inside and out, that’s neatly designed, is economical and comfortable, it about as sensible as a car can be, but desirable at the same time, which is an impressive feat to pull off in this competitive, if shrinking marketplace.

Volkswagen Passat (2015 – 2022) handling and engines

Driving Rating
You’re not going to get out of a Passat and have a racing heartbeat, indeed, the opposite is likely, the Passat being a calming thing to drive.

Volkswagen Passat (2015 – 2022): Handling and ride quality

That’s obvious from the handling, which is safe and surefooted, rather than nimble and alert, and, frankly there’s nothing at all wrong with that.

For the best comfort you’re better sticking to the smaller wheel choices, with the 17- and 18-inch wheels being the best when it comes to ride quality, the larger, optional, sizes, or standard equipment on range-topping models being detrimental to the ride quality.

It’s not so bad as to be uncomfortable, but it adds some unnecessary frequency to the ride that’s not entirely welcome or befitting of the Passat’s otherwise laid-back demeanour.

Most Passats are front-wheel drive, but on some models there’s the choice of 4Motion four-wheel drive if you want the security of the extra traction on slippery surfaces, or aid with stability when towing.

The range-topping, most powerful Passats feature 4Motion as standard. On others there’s the choice of an XDS electronic differential lock, which aids traction and ups the fun factor slightly, but overall the Passat remains a competent, easy-going all-rounder, rather than something you’re going to drive just for the enjoyment of it.

Volkswagen Passat (2015 – 2022): Engines

Diesel might have a bit of a bad reputation presently, but the blend of easy performance mixed with good economy means that diesels remain very much the choice in the Passat line-up.

There’s a choice of 1.6 and 2.0-litre TDI units, with the power starting at 120PS and rising to 190PS. There’s a high-performance, twin-turbo TDI engine at the top of the range, it offering 240PS, and coming as standard with 4Motion four-wheel drive.

The petrol line up is made up of a choice of either 1.5-litre TSI or 2.0-litre TSI engines, with the entry-level 1.5-litre TSI having 150PS, Volkswagen also offering a 2.0-litre TSI with 190PS.

The Passat is offered in estate guise with a range-topping 272PS 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine, which you’ll find over on the estate car review, or as the GTE plug-in hybrid model.

Volkswagen Passat (2015 – 2022): Safety

The Passat comes with a comprehensive range of active and passive safety aids, with all having ABS brakes with Brake Assist and Electronic Brake Pressure Distribution, a post collision braking system and a host of airbags including front driver and passenger, side, curtain and a knee airbag for the driver.

There’s a pre-crash warning system that’ll autonomously brake, a tyre pressure loss indicator, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Assist, Travel Assistant, City Emergency Braking and Traffic Jam Assist.

There’s also electronic stability control as well as traction control, the Passat gaining a maximum five star score in the Euro NCAP crash tests back in 2014, and it’s had additional safety equipment added since then. There are two Isofix child seat mounts on the rear passenger compartment.

Volkswagen Passat (2015 – 2022): Towing

The Passat is an accomplished tow car, indeed, it’s won awards for its towing ability. The performance from all the engines help, with the diesels in particular impressing when towing.

Depending on the model the Passat can tow from either 720kg or 750kg with an unbraked trailer, with up to 2000kg possible with the most powerful diesels with a braked trailer. Additionally, the Passat has trailer stabilisation among its electronic driver aids and Trailer Assist as an option, which helps manage tricky reversing manoeuvring with a trailer.

Volkswagen Passat (2015 – 2022): Practicality

If ultimate practicality is what you’re after then you’re in the wrong place, you need a Passat estate. If you’re happy to forgo that estate’s capacity to swallow all your luggage and perhaps a mutt, then the saloon won’t disappoint, because, it’s still got a sizeable boot.

Indeed, there’s 586 litres for all your stuff, which if you fold the seats down – these doing so in a 60/40 split – then that increases to 1,152 litres. That’s a lot, though loading it might prove a bit tricky, as it’s a proper saloon, so the boot access is relatively narrow in relation to the space it accesses, no drop it in from the top like you might in some hatchback rivals, instead it’s a poke it though the back.

The rear seats offer good leg and headroom, there’s three pews back there, with the outer two really being the only ones you’d want to use with any frequency, that underlined by the fact they both have Isofix child seat mounts. Getting to those child seats should be easy, too, because the rear doors open widely. There’s plenty of oddment storage throughout the well-made cabin, too.

Volkswagen Passat (2015 – 2022): Quality and finish

The cabin is beautifully turned out, particularly in the upper trim grades, with the SEL coming with a full leather interior with its standard equipment. Even in the lower grades, and when it comes with cloth seats, the Passat’s a classy place to be, with a neatly styled, easy to operate interior that feels like it’ll last forever.

Volkswagen Passat (2015 – 2022): Infotainment

You can’t buy a Passat without some form of touchscreen for its infotainment, the only difference being the size of the screen you’re operating, as well as some of the functionality contained within.

All have an eight-speaker system as standard, though Volkswagen, somewhat tightly, doesn’t offer DAB on all, but you do get a Wireless App Connect - a smartphone mirroring system that means you can run Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on all.

There’s Bluetooth on all too, then, and if you want sat nav in the car, as opposed to using it via your phone, you’ll need an SE Nav. There’s plenty of options to upgrade, with a range-topping Discover Navigation Pro system offered for £2200, it gaining not just a larger 9.2-inch touchscreen, but also replaces the conventional instrumentation with a configurable TFT screen.

The middle-ground makes more sense, though, with SE Nav models and up having an 8-inch touchscreen in the centre of the dash, it actually working a bit better than the larger system thanks to the shortcut buttons at the sides of the screen.

Volkswagen Passat (2015 – 2022) value for money

Value for Money Rating
The Passat is cheap to run, especially if you go for a diesel. But servicing isn't the cheapest around.

Volkswagen Passat (2015 – 2022): Prices

The range is made up of SE Nav, SEL and tops out at R-Line. You’ll pay from £28,685 for the SE Nav, with the SEL costing about £500 more, which makes it a bit of no-brainer. The jump up to R-Line is greater, with it starting at £32,115, before you’ve added any options to it.

There are a number of options available across the range, with it worth specifying rear and area view camera systems to help park it if they’re not on the standard equipment.

We’d avoid spending money on things like Sports Suspension or Dynamic Chassis Control (which adds variable damping to the suspension and a choice of Normal, Comfort and Sport) the Passat not a car that gets any better if it’s more ‘sporting’ indeed, it’s at its best when it’s at its most laid back, not when it’s trying to be something it isn’t.

Volkswagen Passat (2015 – 2022): Running Costs

The Passat’s become such a success for good reason, particularly in the business sphere. Good residual values help its running costs be more competitive than mainstream rivals like the Ford Mondeo, Vauxhall Insignia and suchlike, while all, bar a handful of the most powerful examples – which make less sense compared to premium rivals anyway – can comfortably return over 40mpg on the official combined consumption cycle.

The diesels are particularly parsimonious, with the best able to return an official combined figure of as much as 60.1mpg. You’ll do well to achieve that in reality, but you should manage an easy 50mpg in most of the diesels if you’re sensible.

Insurance groups start at around 15E for the entry-level models with the lowest powered engines, rising to as much as 32E for the 240PS turbodiesel model. All come with a 60,000 mile, three-year warranty as standard.

Emissions are, like the consumption, very competitive, with the lowest emitting models achieving just 124-233gkm. No Passat is RDE2 compliant yet, so the first year of car tax will between £215 and £1305.

Servicing from Volkswagen dealers will be competitively priced, but there’ll be plenty of independent garages that can service it for you, too, if you want to keep running costs down to a minimum, but if, as is likely, it’s on a business lease, all this will be taken care of anyway.

Everything in this car is new: its design, technologies and engines. For the first time, there will also be a Passat with a plug-in hybrid drive system.

At 4,767 mm long, the saloon is two millimetres shorter than the previous model, while the wheelbase is 79 mm longer at 2,791 mm and therefore the body overhangs significantly shorter. At the same time, the Passat is 14 mm lower at 1,456 mm, and 12 mm wider at 1,832 mm. Breakover Angle: better than 12.5 degrees helps prevent grounding on ramps. Wheelbase: 2791mm; ground clearance145mm breakover angle: 11.86 degrees.

The rear lights have been made considerably wider and leaner. In this area, the Saloon looks like a young sibling of the Phaeton with its large bootlid surface, and a distinctive crease beneath the rear lights that extends across the rear.

All models of Passat have LED rear lights, while the higher-specification versions feature a distinctive horizontal tail light signature that switches over to a vertically oriented brake light signature under braking. Headlights are halogen or LED. In conjunction with Dynamic Light Assist, one of the two LED headlight options automatically adjusts the beam for maximum illumination of the road without dazzling other traffic.

Despite exterior dimensions that are actually marginally smaller than those of the previous Passat, interior space is improved, with more leg- and head-room, as well as increased luggage space.

Passat specification updated

LED headlights are now standard on the SE Business, GT and Alltrack trims and the Passat R-Line now features Premium LED headlights. LED headlights replace the previous halogen units, and include 12 separate LED daytime running lights that also perform the indicator function.

On the Passat R-Line, the Premium LED headlights feature dual ‘U-shaped’ LED daytime running lights and dynamic curve lighting. Here, the lights swivel as the steering wheel is turned giving greater visibility of approaching corners and an early warning of potential hazards.

Every new Passat now comes with Volkswagen’s App-Connect system as standard. App-Connect enables the driver or a passenger to link their smartphone to the car via a USB cable. The screen of the phone is then ‘mirrored’ onto the Passat’s infotainment touchscreen.

This enables the user to play music and playlists on the move. The car will also read out text messages and allow the user to dictate a reply. A wide variety of other apps are available, too, including Spotify and Skype. App-Connect works with Apple CarPlay™, Android Auto™ and MirrorLink™ which means it is compatible with the vast majority of mobile smartphones.

From today the upgraded Passat SE Business, R-Line and Alltrack models will feature heated front seats as standard. Already on the Passat GT’s extensive equipment list, this means nearly every new Passat from now on will include this welcome addition.

SE Business models now feature 3Zone climate control. This means the driver and front passenger can set the temperature for their area of the car. There are separate controls for the rear passengers, too, and so the temperature of these three ‘zones’ of the Passat can be individually controlled. 3Zone climate control was already standard on the Passat GT, R-Line and Alltrack models.

Another update for the Passat SE Business is the addition of a colour multi-function display. The multi-function computer gives the driver a variety of information about the status of their Passat.

February 2019

2019 updates for Volkswagen Passat announced

A mid-life facelift for the Passat is set to be revealed at Geneva as the model approaches 30 million sold worldwide.

New technology includes 'Travel Assist', a system capable of partially automated driving at any speed. A new MIB3 infotainment system allows wireless integration of iPhone apps via Apple CarPlay, while the Passat can now be permanently online.

The plug-in hybrid Passat GTE model now has a range of 34 miles under the WLTP test. All petrol and diesel Passats are now equipped with a particulate filter.

July 2019

Updated Passat goes on sale

Entry-level 2019 Passat SE trim cars are identifiable by 17-inch ‘Istanbul’ alloy wheels and black roof rails on Estate models, while a Composition Media System, incorporating a 6.5” colour touch-screen, DAB and Bluetooth comes as standard. The entire Passat range benefits from boosted connectivity, with wireless App Connect now fitted as standard, allowing the driver to seamlessly connect their smartphone to the Passat’s infotainment system via Apple CarPlay, Android Auto or MirrorLink via Bluetooth, without the need to plug the device in via a USB cable.

The Passat range gains all-LED headlights from entry-level SE cars up, including LED running lights that perform the indicator function as standard. The rear lights also incorporate LED technology. In addition, all Passat models come with Wireless App Connect. The entry-level option, 1.5-litre TSI 150 PS will open for order in the coming weeks, available as both a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG. Until then, prices for the Passat start at £27,630 RRP OTR for the 1.6-litre TDI 120 PS seven-speed DSG saloon.

The 2019 Passat is also offered with Level 2 Autonomous Travel Assist: a system that allows the car to be driven at up to 130 mph – where legal – in a partially automated mode. It combines the latest version of Adaptive Cruise Control, version 3.0, which can now auto adjust the speed including temporary speed-limits as well as slowing for junctions and corners. It is led by information from road sign recognition and GPS. This is combined with Lane Assist version 2.0 which can now recognise kerbs and grass verges as well as road markings. This new driver-assistance technology will be standard across the Passat range.

SEL examples can be identified by their 17-inch ‘Nivelle’ alloy wheels, and also offer Vienna leather seats, Discover Navigation system with 8.0” colour screen and Voice Control. SEL cars also have tinted rear windows and silver roof rails for the Estate.

R-Line brings 18-inch ‘Monterrey’ alloy wheels, sports suspension, R-Line exterior styling pack, as well as Nappa leather front sport seats embroidered with R-Line logo. R-Line decorative inserts for dash and door panels, stainless steel pedals, 3Zone climate control and black roof lining are also included, while keyless entry and an easy open boot also feature as standard on this version.

Limited edition top-spec R-Line Edition Estate models have 19-inch ‘Pretoria’ alloy wheels, Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC), IQ.Light LED matrix headlights, and Discover Navigation Pro with 9.2” colour screen. The engine choice for R-Line Edition is limited to two, the 2.0-litre TSI 272 PS and the 2.0-litre TDI 240 PS, both fitted with 4MOTION and seven-speed DSG. Just 150 of these dynamic Passats will available for UK buyers.

The Passat GTE now has an increased 34-mile electric range (WLTP). As standard it features 17-inch ‘Nivelle’ alloy wheels, sports suspension, blue brake calipers, unique signature ‘C’ shape front LED running lights, Discover Navigation system with 8.0” colour screen and a charging point in the radiator grille. The GTE Advance model has 18-inch ‘Monterrey’ alloy wheels, IQ.Light LED matrix headlights, Discover Navigation Pro with 9.2” colour screen and keyless entry with an easy open boot. Orders for the Passat GTE will open in the coming weeks.

The Passat Alltrack has also been updated, with 18-inch ‘Kalamata’ alloy wheels, chrome exterior mirrors, plus raised suspension with underbody and wheel arch protection. Inside it boasts the latest Discover Navigation system with 8.0” colour screen and Summit cloth seats.

With more standard equipment options are reduced to a list of 50. These include nine different alloy wheel designs, a head-up display, Panoramic sunroof, Trailer Assist including Park Assist and a premium Dynaudio sound system.

Two new colours: Bottle Green and Aurora Gold are available.

Two petrol engines are available at launch: a 2.0-litre TSI four-cylinder available with 190 PS or 272 PS. Both come with a 7-speed DSG transmission, while the 272 PS version is equipped with 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Later in 2019, once problems with the engine have been overcome, a 1.5-litre TSI EVO four-cylinder power plant with Active Cylinder Shutdown is scheduled. This can shut down two of the four cylinders under certain low-load conditions in order to save fuel. All petrol engines on the Passat will be fitted with particulate filters.

At launch three four-cylinder diesels will be available: 1.6-litre TDI with 120 PS and a 2.0-litre TDI with 190 PS or 240 PS outputs. All three engines will only be available with a 7-speed DSG. While the 190 PS will optionally be available with 4MOTION, it will be fitted to the 240 PS as standard.

Also available is an extensively reworked 2.0-litre TDI EVO with 150 PS with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG. This new engine will feature Active Cylinder Shutdown.

What to watch out for

11-08-2016:

Fault reported with Autohold brake of November 2015 Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TDI Bluemotion estate bought as an ex-demo in May 2016. In last 2 weeks autohold has failed to release on over 25 occasions on one journey and on 8 occasions on another journey. The garage cannot identify the fault, despite it occurring twice in the dealership's car park with a mechanic in the car. We'd guess as a problem with the multifunction brake light switch that has separate switches for the brake lights, autohold and (if a DSG) to send a message to the ECU that the brakes are on.

17-03-2017:

Cabin heater fault reported on 2016 Passat at 35,000 kilometres. Intermittently hot air comes into the cabin at window and footwell even though the heater has been set to OFF on both sides.
Garage advised switching on the Recirculate button when it happens.

01-10-2017:

Report of leaking roof on 2017 Passat Estate with panoramic roof. Dealer says it needs a new roof under warranty.

25-10-2017:

Report by high mileage driver that his Passat 2.0 TDI 150, bought in March 2017, had its first service at 20,000 miles in October 2017 and that MPG has dropped from 58MPG to 55MPG, plus 'flas spots' in each gear whe accelerating, possibly as the result of a NOx reducing TSB.

21-07-2018:

Obtrusive hum reporteed between 2100 and 2300rpm from engine of 2017 Passat 2.0T DI SE Business at 27k miles I gave a 2.0 litre diesel Passat SE business 2017 with 27k on the clock. Particularly noticeable in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears, the latter being the most irritating as it coincides with typical motorway speeds. Turned out to be a resonance problem of engine noise frequency at 2,200 rpm coinciding with the natural vibration frequency of an a/c pipe. Changing the pipe eliminated the noise.

14-08-2018:

Report of DQ200 7-speed dry clutch DSG of 24k mile 2017 Passat 1.6 TDI Business Edition estate going into 'emergency mode'. It has had a fresh clutch pack, new Mechatronics and been reprogrammed but still fails, so the dealer is fitting a new transmission under warranty.

03-09-2018:

Report of problems with Passat 1.4 TSI DQ200 7-speed dry clutch DSG at 6,500 miles. When changing from 2nd to 3rd gear a judder can be felt through accelerator. Also on 2 occasions the DSG has got stuck in 3rd gear. It would not go higher although the engine was screaming. Driver had to slow down sufficiently to allow the engine to go into 2nd gear and stop. Restarted engine after 5 mins and all seemed ok. Booked in with supplying dealer to be checked.

17-12-2018:

Report of failure of rear brake discs of 2016 Passat 2.0 TDI estate at 36,000 miles due to pads 90% worn and rear brake discs corroded. (This model Passat has an electromechanical parking brake with autohold brake hold function.) The on-board entertainment and nav system is always playing up too. They did a software update at the service too and this had made no difference. Half the time the volume won’t come off silent without turning it off and on again, the compass doesn’t work sometimes on the display in front of the steering wheel and also this same displays gets stuck on starting nav…. Even when the main screen is working.

12-08-2019:

Report from owner of 2019MY Passat 1.5 TSI EVO that following concerns about its running when manoeuvring at low revs owner raised this with the Dealer and subsequently had a software update. Following the update the car is now less responsive, as if it is in eco mode, and owner is not convinced it has the same power as before. He requested it be returned to the original setting but was told this was not possible.

11-09-2019:

Report of both front and rear brake discs of December 2017 Passat becomine so corroded and the rears 95% worn in 19 months and 14,660 miles that dealer recommended replacement of all four at a cost of £800.
