Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer Review 2024

Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer At A Glance

4/5
Honest John Overall Rating
The Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer shows that estate cars can still be cool. It looks great inside and out, and boasts plenty of practical space. There are superb plug-in hybrid versions, plus an all-electric model is on the way.

+Great design. Estate car practicality. A wide choice of petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid or electric powertrains.

-Not as good to drive as the Toyota Corolla Touring Sports, or as roomy as the Volkswagen Golf Estate. Hybrid models sacrifice some boot space.

New prices start from £39,080

The Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer has all the style of the latest Astra, but with more passenger space and room for luggage. Its modern and athletic looks make it stand out from the best estates more than ever before. Available in petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and performance versions, there’s also a fully electric version coming soon.

Vauxhall is going through a revolution as part of the massive Stellantis Group.  Suddenly, its cars are looking fresh and modern, there are plug-in hybrids and electric models, and its interiors are stylish with nicely integrated tech.

This is a whole new era for Vauxhall and it’s one in which the Astra Sports Tourer is much more deserving of its name.

In a world demanding ever more SUVs, the best estate cars still have their loyal fans. Spacious interiors, additional load space, sharper handling and more compact dimensions can all give an estate car the edge over an SUV.

In recent years, the Astra estate has lost out to its traditional rival the Ford Focus Estate, as well as the stylish SEAT Leon Estate and the immensely practical Skoda Octavia Estate, but now it’s back and it means business.

There are three trim levels: Design, GS and Ultimate. All provide lots of standard equipment to tempt buyers away from rivals and SUVs.

Vauxhall’s new Pure Panel infotainment and instrument cluster digital screens not only look really good, but are simple to use and packed with features to make your drive both easier and more enjoyable.

Vauxhall has included a full range of engine options to suit both private and company car buyers, from the nippy 1.2 turbocharged petrol and long-distance 1.5-litre diesel, to the latest plug-in hybrid models with an emissions-free electric range of up to 42 miles.

A fully electric version is joining the line-up later in 2023, taking on more electric estates arriving from Peugeot, BMW and others.

Then there is the Astra Sports Tourer GSe, sitting under Vauxhall and Opel’s new GSe performance sub-brand.

Engineered to deliver practicality and performance, the GSe uses the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, but power is boosted to 225PS and the chassis and suspension have been uprated with promises of dynamic handling.

It all marks a big change for the practical, but formerly rather humble, Astra estate. Even the name ‘Sports Tourer’ infers that this isn’t just about carrying around work gear or going flatpack shopping – it’s designed and engineered to go touring to new places.

Is it all just marketing fluff? Our Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer review will reveal all.

Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer handling and engines

Driving Rating
Vauxhall has given the Astra Sports Tourer athletic looks, but it’s more about comfort than performance and dynamic driving. The suspension does a fine job of soaking up bumps in the road and it’s so quiet in the car that you’d think you were in something much more expensive. It’s not as dynamic as the Ford Focus, or the closely related duo of the Toyota Corolla Touring Sports and Suzuki Swace, but it’s a pleasure around town and on the open road. It’s also superb at passing the time on long motorway drives.

Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer 2024: Handling and ride quality

The engineers have done a good job of giving the Astra Sports Tourer great all-round handling.

It’s not as sporty as its styling suggests, unless you go for the GSe version, but it’s very comfortable in town and on rural roads, where not only does it cope really well with bumpy surfaces, but it does so in a quiet and composed manner.

The ride quality is extremely good, and you could easily think you are in something with a premium price tag.

We haven’t driven the GSe version yet, but the engineers have uprated its suspension with springs that are 11% more stiff and revised dampers that also lower it by 10mm.

The steering has been recalibrated for a sportier feel and the Sport driving mode has been tweaked so the stability control is less cautious.

Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer 2024: Engines

The Astra Sports Tourer is available with regular petrol and diesel options, or plug-in hybrid power.

There's a 1.2 litre turbo petrol producing 110PS with a six-speed manual gearbox, or there’s a choice of manual or eight-speed automatic transmissions with a 130PS version of the same engine.

Long-distance mileage is easily taken care of with a 130PS 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel, and it too can be had with a manual or automatic gearbox.

Then there is the 1.6-litre PHEV, which provides a combined power output of 180PS and a claimed electric driving range of up to 42 miles.

It’s at its best around town, where the electric motor takes care of setting off with traffic. The petrol engine kicks in pretty seamlessly, meaning it’s also a perfectly competent motorway cruiser.

The GSe is the latest model to join the range and is part of Vauxhall’s new performance sub-brand.

In the Astra Sports Tourer it means a jump in power for the PHEV powertrain to 225PS, of which 180PS comes from the 1.6-litre petrol engine and 110PS (81.2kW) from the electric motor.

Torque is increased to 360Nm and the 0-62mph time is 7.5 seconds. Despite the increase in performance, Vauxhall claims the Sports Tourer GSe will still cover up to 39 miles in pure electric mode.

If you want to go fully electric, then the good news is that the choice of EV estates in the UK will be increased by the addition of the Astra Sports Tourer Electric.

Its great looks will be combined with a 54kWh battery and 114kW electric motor to provide a claimed 258-mile driving range, plus the ability to charge on a 100kW DC rapid charger to 80% in 30 minutes.

Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer 2024: Safety

The Astra received four stars out of five for safety from Euro NCAP when it was tested in 2022 and this rating is also applied to the Sports Tourer.

It lost out on the maximum score mainly due to not having some driver assistance systems, but all models have automatic emergency braking, driver fatigue detection and lane keeping assistance, as well as Isofix child seat mounts and eight airbags.

Higher spec versions get adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, multifunction cameras and radars.

Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer 2024: Towing

You’d expect an estate car to be up to the task of towing a trailer or caravan and that’s the case for all but the fully electric model.

The 110PS manual can pull 680kg unbraked or 1200kg braked, while the 130PS manual adds 10kg to the unbraked trailer weight.

The 130PS auto can pull 680kg unbraked and up to 1400kg braked. PHEV models can pull 750kg unbraked and 1400kg braked.

Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer interior

Interior Rating
Vauxhall really has upped its game in terms of style, especially with its interiors. These look and feel great, with modern, geometric designs and superb integration of technology. Most of the cabin is the same as in the Astra hatchback and includes Vauxhall’s Pure Panel infotainment and instrumentation screens, but fortunately there are still a few buttons for the controls that are in regular use. It ticks the boxes for quality and comfort, plus you get the added benefit of a little more room inside the cabin versus the hatchback, along with far more boot space.

Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer 2024: Practicality

Practicality is one of the defining characteristics of estate cars, and why for decades Brits bought millions of them.

Benefits include the fact that they are more compact than an SUV, which is handy in town. Being lower down, it’s often easier to load large or heavy objects into the boot as well.

The Astra Sports Tourer is naturally longer than the regular Astra, with 57mm more space in the wheelbase. Standard boot space is 597 litres, which can be expanded to 1,634 litres with the rear seats folded.

The back seats have a 40/20/40 split, while the boot floor has two levels to separate items.

This is not quite as much space as in some rivals, notably the Volkswagen Group trio of the SEAT Leon, Skoda Octavia and Volkswagen Golf. However, unlike previous generations, the Astra estate now has the style and technology to bolster its appeal.

If you’re considering going the plug-in route, bear in mind that luggage space is reduced in both the PHEV and fully electric versions. These offer 516 litres of space, or 1,553 litres when the rear seats are down.

Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer 2024: Quality and finish

The materials are a great mixture of soft-touch and harder plastics, with components such as the air vents and centre console storage all really well integrated from both a design and quality perspective.

It doesn’t scream ‘premium’ by any means, but it’s a huge step up from previous generation Astras. Like the exterior design, it shows how much effort is being put into both design and quality.

Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer 2024: Infotainment

Vauxhall calls its infotainment system Pure Panel. It’s essentially a combination of two screens within a cleanly designed panel across the top of the dashboard. It includes a 10.0-inch screen for the instrument cluster and another of identical size for the infotainment.

The central touchscreen provides access to a number of audio choices, including DAB radio. There’s Bluetooth phone connectivity through the screen, voice control or buttons on the steering wheel, and it’s easy to pair your phone with the system as well.

Do so and you will have access to wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, replicating many of your favourite apps on the car’s screen.

The 10-inch digital instrument cluster has a number of display options and it’s equally easy to scroll through settings and displays using buttons on the steering wheel.

Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer value for money

Value for Money Rating
With lots of standard equipment and prices starting at £28,010, you do get a lot of car for your money. The SEAT Leon Estate is much cheaper and for almost the price of the entry-level Astra estate, you can have a high-spec version of the Leon. The Skoda Octavia Estate also undercuts the Astra on price, and while it isn’t as stylish or well-equipped, it is more spacious inside and still the overall benchmark in the class.

Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer 2024: Prices

At the time of writing, prices for the Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer kick off at £28,010 for the 1.2 turbo petrol Design model.

It’s fairly basic, though, so it’s worth looking at the GS (from £30,905). Topping the regular petrol line-up is the Ultimate, which costs from £34,265.

Then there are the plug-in hybrid models, starting with the GS at £38,985 with its 180PS electric motor and 1.6-litre petrol engine.

Next up is the Ultimate at £42,300. The PHEV range is topped by the GSE with a 225PS electric motor for £43,250.

Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer 2024: Running Costs

Vauxhall’s official figures for the petrol models claim combined fuel consumption between 47.9-52.3mpg.

Diesel models could shift this number into the low 60s and the PHEV versions can potentially achieve 256mpg – but that’s only if you keep them charged regularly and run mostly on the electric motor. If not, the figure will be significantly lower.

Petrol versions are liable for vehicle excise duty of £210-£255 in the first year and £180 in subsequent years, while diesels still attract less tax due to lower emissions.

PHEV models emit 23-26g/km of CO2, which means no VED (annual road tax) is payable on those costing less than £40,000.

Some do cross the threshold, though, so they will be liable for a payment of £390 a year. Electric versions are exempt for now.

It’s worth being aware that service intervals vary across the range. Petrol models need to go in every year or 12,500 miles, while PHEV versions will need to be serviced annually or every 20,000 miles.

Servicing of the fully electric version is every two years or 16,000 miles, although it will need an initial inspection after the first 8,000 miles.

Vauxhall roadside assistance is provided with all models for 12 months and that is extended to three years for the fully electric variant.

Extended warranties are available to provide peace of mind beyond the standard three-year or 60,000-mile warranty, and Vauxhall offers a variety of optional service plans.

New Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer priced from £25,005

Vauxhall has confirmed pricing and specifications for the All-new Astra Sports Tourer. Available with a choice of powertrains, including a highly-efficient Plug-in HYBRID-e version for the first time, prices for the All-New Astra Sports Tourer start from £25,005 on-the-road, with first deliveries due in late summer.

New Vauxhall Design Language

Together with its five-door hatchback sibling, the stylish Astra Sports Tourer is a true design statement and Vauxhall’s first estate to carry the brand’s new bold and pure design philosophy. The Vauxhall Vizor front end features a single, clean panel that houses the new Griffin logo and various driver and safety aids, helping the Astra Sports Tourer achieve a clean and sharp look. The Vizor front end also houses the LED headlights and front camera.

At the rear, the Vauxhall Griffin logo sits at the centre of the tailgate, with the rear featuring the same vertically aligned, high-mounted brake lights as the Astra hatchback – further strengthening the Astra family ties. With its next compact estate generation, Vauxhall shows that the Astra Sports Tourer is ready to define a new era.

Measuring 4,642mm long, 1,860mm wide and 1,480mm tall, and with a loading height of 600mm, the practical Astra Sports Tourer further strengthens Vauxhall’s leading reputation in the estate sector and is another showcase of Vauxhall’s known talent for efficient packaging. The overall length is 60mm shorter compared to the previous generation Astra Tourer, thanks to the short front overhang, and features a 57mm longer wheelbase compared to the All-new Astra hatchback, at 2,732mm.

Next-Generation Tech And Safety Features

The design revolution continues inside. The fully digital Pure Panel human-machine interface (HMI) offers customers a pure, intuitive experience and features a 10-inch driver instrument cluster and a 10-inch digital touchscreen. Important settings such as climate control can still be selected directly via physical switches below the console for ease of access. The All-New Astra Sports Tourer is also best-in-class for smartphone connectivity, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto as standard across all models.

From standard, the All-New Astra Sports Tourer features the latest automated driver assistance systems. All models come with a Driver drowsiness system, eight airbags, lane departure warning and automatic emergency braking. In addition, the All-New Astra Sports Tourer can be had with active cruise control which increases or decreases speed to follow the vehicle in front, up to a complete stop. Models with automatic transmissions can resume driving automatically with the ‘Stop & Go’ technology.

GS-Line models come with an additional multifunction camera in the windscreen, four body cameras (one at the front, one at the rear and one on each side), five radar sensors (one at the front and one at each corner), as well as ultrasonic sensors front and rear.

The ultra-ergonomic seats are the best the compact estate segment has to offer, and are extremely comfortable, especially on long journeys. The driver’s seat has been developed in-house and is AGR* certified resulting in unrivalled comfort and support.

Efficient powertrains

The All-New Astra Sports Tourer will be available from launch with a 1.6 petrol Plug-in Hybrid-e powertrain for the first time, producing 180hp and offering up to 42 miles of electric range (EAER WLTP high).

In addition to Plug-in Hybrid-e versions, the All-new Astra Sports Tourer will be available with highly efficient petrol and diesel engines. Customers have a choice of 1.2-litre or 1.2-litre turbo three-cylinder petrol engines with a six-speed manual transmission, with turbo variants also available with a smooth eight-speed automatic. Diesel models come with a 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder engine, which can be had either with a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic.

Space and practicality

The boot of the All-New Astra Sports Tourer provides up to 597 litres of useful storage space with the rear seats upright, and up to 1,634 litres when folded. In addition, when the 40:20:40- split rear seats are folded, the floor is completely flat – making it easier to load long and bulky items. Even with its underfloor lithium-ion battery, Plug-in HYBRID-e variants achieve cargo volumes of 516 litres and 1,553 litres, respectively.

Petrol and diesel variants of the Astra Sports Tourer can be specified with the optional “Intelli-Space” feature. This moveable load floor can be easily adjusted with one hand to high and low positions and tilted at a 45-degree angle. In addition, for even more convenience, the retractable boot storage cover can be stowed when the moveable floor is in both the upper as well as the lower position – in contrast to competitors that only allow stowage of the cover when the floor is in the upper position.

The Astra Sports Tourer with “Intelli-Space” can also make life easier in the event of a flat tyre. The kits for tyre repair and first aid are stored in clever underfloor compartments that can be accessed from the boot or rear passenger seating area. This means that the kits can be reached without needing to fully unpack the boot.

Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer GSe revealed

Following the recent announcement that Vauxhall will introduce GSe as a new electrified performance sub-brand, the brand is today announcing the first models to launch with a GSe version – the All-New Vauxhall Astra GSe and the All-New Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer GSe.

Both models will feature Vauxhall’s advanced Plug-in Hybrid powertrains and offer the optimum balance between ride comfort and performance-oriented handling, as well as ultra-low emissions thanks to the electrified powertrain.

James Taylor, Acting Managing Director, Vauxhall, said: “Available with Plug-in Hybrid powertrains from launch, the All-New Astra GSe and All-New Astra Sports Tourer GSe are the ideal cars for launching our dynamic new sub-brand, offering sporty styling, enhanced driving performance and all the benefits of an electrified powertrain. As we work towards becoming an all-electric brand by 2028, our range-topping GSe models will showcase that electrified performance and driving pleasure can go hand-in-hand.”

GSe stands for Grand Sport Electric and offers athletic looks that build on Vauxhall’s award-winning Bold & Pure design as well as driver-focused chassis set-ups that complement the higher performance of an electrified powertrain whilst retaining the zero-emissions-in-use benefits.

With an impressive system power output of 225PS and maximum torque of 360Nm (WLTP combined fuel consumption 256.8-235.4mpg, CO2 emissions of 26-25 g/km; N.B. preliminary values), the All-New Astra GSe and All-New Astra Sports Tourer GSe will match the best in their respective classes for launch from a standstill, acceleration and maximum speed.

Vauxhall has achieved the performance-oriented handling characteristics by equipping the All-New Vauxhall Astra GSe models with a dedicated chassis that is 10mm lower than before and delivers superior stability during cornering, under braking and at higher speed.

A unique GSe suspension set-up, as well as unique steering calibration, offers more agile and precise handling characteristics.

The steering in the All-New Astra GSe and All-New Astra Sports Tourer GSe has been calibrated for a sportier feel, while the unique springs and oil-filled dampers of the front and rear suspension are specially tuned not only for dynamic driving but also for comfort. The dampers feature KONI FSD (Frequency Selective Damping), which enables different damping characteristics at high frequencies (suspension control) versus low frequencies (body control). The ESP settings are also exclusive to GSe models, with a higher activation threshold to match the dynamic driving behaviour.

Purposeful: bold and pure New Astra design plus signature GSe styling cues

The eighth generation Vauxhall Astra is a bold and pure design statement for the brand; the signature styling cues of the GSe give it an even more purposeful appearance. From the outside, the design of the 18-inch light-alloy wheels – inspired by the acclaimed, all-electric Manta GSe concept – the specific front bumper and fascia, and the GSe emblem on the tailgate, leave no doubts as to the dynamic GSe character. Inside, the sporty ambitions are highlighted by the Alcantara®-trimmed performance front seats that have been certified by AGR* to provide optimal comfort and support.

Further specification details will be announced in due course.  The vehicles will go on sale in the UK towards the end of the year with customer deliveries scheduled for early 2023.

June 2023

Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer GSe priced from £43,250

Vauxhall has opened orders for the Astra Sports Tourer GSe, the electrified performance variant of the Astra Sports Tourer. Prices for the Astra Sports Tourer GSe start from £43,250.

GSe stands for Grand Sport Electric and is the new performance sub-brand from Vauxhall, integrating electric performance credentials with sharp handling and styling. From launch, there are three GSe variants: Grandland GSe, Astra GSe, and Astra Sports Tourer GSe. All three models feature unique styling upgrades inside and out and come with powerful electrified drivetrains and improved handling thanks to suspension and steering upgrades.

Order books for Grandland GSe and Astra GSe are already open.

Astra Sports Tourer GSe – electrified performance

The Plug-in Hybrid powertrain seen on conventional Astra Sports Tourer versions is upgraded for GSe variants. Astra Sports Tourer GSe comes with a 180PS 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine connected to an 81.2kW (110PS) electric motor for a total power output of 225PS and maximum torque of 360Nm – up from 180PS and 250Nm on standard Plug-in Hybrid variants. This helps the Astra Sports Tourer GSe accelerate from 0-62mph in 7.5 seconds and achieve a top-speed of 146mph.

Featuring a 12.4kWh battery, Astra Sports Tourer GSe offers up to 39 miles of pure electric range, and with emissions as low as 26g/km CO2, the Astra Sports Tourer GSe is eligible for a Benefit-in-Kind rate of 12%.

Added driving enjoyment

Vauxhall engineers have revised the suspension onboard the Astra Sports Tourer GSe for sharper handling, fitting it with 11 per cent stiffer springs and Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) technology by specialists KONI. The technology adjusts the damping characteristics at high frequencies (to control the suspension) and low frequencies (focusing on the body) to provide a smooth and balanced ride.

As part of the performance upgrades, Vauxhall has also recalibrated the Astra Sports Tourer GSe’s steering for a sportier feel and to deliver purer feedback. Steering response has been increased by 9 per cent over standard models, with the response rate better at all wheel angles. This also improves the on-centre feel and helps deliver better feedback at speed.

Vauxhall has also adjusted the Sport mode on GSe models, with the electronic stability control (ESC) set to engage slightly later.

Unique design and specification

The Astra Sports Tourer GSe features several styling upgrades to help it stand out on the road. A 10mm lower profile is achieved from the revised suspension and damping profile, and 18-inch ‘Commodore’ wheels give the car a distinct stance, while a black roof and black Griffin logos are also featured.

All Astra Sports Tourer GSe models also come with IntelliLux adaptive LED® Pixel headlights and dark tinted rear windows.

Inside, Alcantara®-trimmed performance front seats, certified by Germany’s AGR (Aktion Gesunder Rücken or ‘Campaign for Healthier Backs’) and a GSe-specific leather steering wheel are included as part of the GSe upgrades. A Multimedia Pure Panel Pro Navigation system with a 10-inch digital instrument display and a 10-inch touchscreen with Natural Voice Recognition is also featured, as is wireless smartphone charging and the Intelli-HUD head-up-display technology for an improved driving experience.

For improved safety and convenience, Astra Sports Tourer GSe models feature Intelli-Drive technology with Forward Collision Alert and Active Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection. Also included is Drowsiness Detection, Lane Departure Warning and Traffic Sign Assistant, Cross Traffic and Side Blind Spot alert and Automatic Speed Assistant with Stop Function – all contributing towards a safer driving experience for driver and passenger.

February 2024

Vauxhall adds hybrid powertrain to Astra Sports Tourer line-up

Vauxhall has opened orders for the Astra Sports Tourer Hybrid. Prices start from £32,225 with first deliveries commencing from July.

The Astra Sports Tourer Hybrid is powered by a 136PS 1.2 petrol engine paired to a new electrified six-speed dual clutch automatic transmission that incorporates a 28PS electric motor and 0.89kWh lithium ion battery.
