Reference, has a choice of the 1.6 102 PS petrol engine or the 1.9 105 PS diesel, both with five-speed gearboxes. Standard equipment on Reference includes six airbags (front, side, curtain), air conditioning, ABS, TCS, electro-mechanical power steering, six-speaker radio/CD, electric front windows, remote central locking with alarm and driver’s seat with height and lumbar adjustment.

Stylance, has the same engine choice as Reference but gains extra equipment. Two-zone climate control, audio system controls on the steering wheel, eight speakers, cruise control, trip computer, 16 inch seven-spoke alloys, rear electric windows, illuminated sun visor mirrors, height and lumbar adjustable passenger and driver seats, leather steering wheel and gear knob are just some.

Altea Sport has the choice of the two sportiest engines, the 2.0 litre FSI petrol with 150 PS and the 2.0 litre TDI with 140 PS, both linked to a six-speed gearbox. As well as the extra performance these engines bring, Sport models also gain extra equipment over Stylance in the form of ESP and EBA (emergency brake assistance), racey five-spoke alloy wheels and sports seats.

Bluetooth option allows a standardised wireless communication between two mobile devices. The great advantage of this is that no physical connection is required between a mobile telephone and the vehicle, to provide a completely hands-free system.

The Bluetooth system is operated by means of the multifunction buttons in the steering wheel to accept and disconnect calls and access one of its most important features, voice recognition. This allows users to verbally request a call to a number or a name and save new numbers in the phone book, and all while keeping their hands firmly on the wheel. Priced at £195, the Bluetooth option is comparable in price to fitting a hands-free phone kit, is permanent, does not interfere with the interior aesthetic design of the car and has many more functions, including upgrading the CD player to read MP3.

What to watch out for

01-01-0001:

All engines need new timing belts and tensioners every 4 years or 60,000 miles whichever comes first.

ESP warning light can indicate Fault Code "Boost Pressure Sensor G201". This is embedded inside Teves Mk 60 ABS systems and requires replacement of ABS control unit/pump. Seems to be age-related, occurring mainly in 3 - 5 year old cars. Does not necessarily lead to an MoT failure. Some owners being asked to pay up to £1,500 for replacements on cars as young as 4 years old. More on the problem and independent rebuilds of the unit at:http://ecutesting.com/vw_golf_touran_abs_pump_module.html Cheaper £225 fix by www.sinspeed.co.uk

WARNING: Dodgy dealers and unscrupulous private vendors are now unplugging the ECU as no warning then shows on the dash. Replace the plug and the light 'ECU off' appears permanently whether you switch it on or off.

Also minor problems with hestitation when pulling away and car very prone to stalling.

On 6-speed twin shaft manuals the gearchange from 1st to 2nd can become still. First stage dealer cure is to replace the transmission oil. If that fails, it needs a synchro ring replacing. So if your box stiffens up, make sure it is attended to before the warranty expires.

A problem of 2.0TDI PD 140s is failure of the oil pump. The oil pump is driven from a balancre shaft via a short hexagonal shaft. The peaks of this hexagonal shaft locate in six corresponding but minute grooves machined within the otherwise circular-bored oil pump drive shaft. Thus, the oil pump drive relies entirely on an interference fit of little more than 0.010" along the peaks of the hexagonal shaft. After about 50,000 miles, the shaft can round off, resulting in a totally destroyed engine and turbo, plus a bill of up to £9,000. If the danger is known and the oil pump is removed by the garage in good time, a new replacement pump will cost over £500, plus the labour etc to remove and refit it. However, it is also possible to save the old pump and modify the drive at a fraction of the cost of a new one. Many local machine shop already have numbers of these pumps in for such rectification, the drive shaft of each having been on the point of rounding off.

22-01-2011:

If ESP/ABS amber warning light comes on intermittently and will not re-set, you might not actually have the ATE Teves Mk 60 ABS/ESP problem. First check circuits and start at the ABS fuse and holder (no 9 on a Golf, on scuttle edge by driver door). Pull it out, have a look and if okay replace it. The warning light may then go out. Sometimes they slip out a bit and become wobbly, which is enough to set off the warning.

09-05-2019:

Report of "tapping noise" from dual mass flywheel of SEAT Toledo 1.9TDI DSG. Owner told it needs replacing.
