SEAT Ateca Review 2024
SEAT Ateca At A Glance

On average it achieves 79% of the official MPG figure
The SEAT Ateca is the Spanish brand's first attempt at an SUV. Launched back in 2016, it was very lightly updated in 2020, meaning it's one of the oldest models in the hotly competitive family SUV class. It shares much with the Skoda Karoq, which is fairly obvious to see if you park them side-by-side. Read our SEAT Ateca review to find out all you need to know.
The most important of many rivals for the SEAT Ateca are the Nissan Qashqai, the Kia Sportage, the Hyundai Tucson and the Ford Kuga, though there are many more offerings, some with premium badges.
Key to the Ateca's enduring appeal in the face of newer rivals is its driving experience. Even years on from launch you'd be hard-pushed to find a better handling SUV of this size, because the Ateca feels keen and agile in the bends whichever model you go for. The trade off is a firm ride that smooths out at speed.
Even if you're not driving like your hair's on fire, you'll find the SEAT Ateca easy to drive and refined on the move. Visibility is very good, while it feels very much like a taller Leon (which it basically is).
There's also a range of excellent engines, ranging from a 1.0-litre three cylinder that punches above its weight, to a punchy and economical 2.0-litre diesel. There's no real weak link in the engine lineup, although the higher powered petrols are fitted with a DSG transmission that is a bit dim-witted if you want to pull away quickly. The lack of a hybrid option also shows the Ateca up as an older model now.
The low-to-mid level SE Technology is the best choice if you want plenty of equipment without breaking the bank as it comes with dual-zone climate control, an eight-inch touchscreen sat-nav, 18-inch alloys and wireless phone charging.
But whichever version you go for, you get a spacious and practical interior that'll stand up well to the rigours of family life thanks to solid build quality. Yes, the design is starting to show its age, particularly around newer offerings such as the Tucson and Sportage, but the simple dashboard design means everything is easy to use.
We lived with a Ateca for six months - find out how we got on with it in our SEAT Ateca long term test. Looking for a second opinion? Why not read heycar's SEAT Ateca review.

SEAT Ateca 2024: Handling and ride quality
This is where the SEAT Ateca really stands out, and still feels fresh in the face of newer competition. There really isn't a better choice if you're the sort of person who wants to drop the kids off at school and find a twisty route home.
With sharp and precise steering, loads of grip even on front-wheel drive models and a real feeling of agility, you find yourself forgetting you're in a tall, boxy SUV quite often. There's very little body roll, either.
Despite this the Ateca is pretty refined (although not class leading) - wind and road noise are kept at bay most of the time. The one trade-off is the ride: it's not bouncy like some SUVs, but the more sporting setup means that potholes are felt quite a bit around town, particularly if you go for a high-spec trim level with big wheels which makes things a bit crashy on bad roads.
Keep the wheel size modest and the Ateca is firm but controlled, and it becomes really well-damped the faster you go. Nevertheless, if comfort is a priority the more softly sprung Skoda Karoq is a better bet.
SEAT Ateca 2024: Engines
Another area where the Ateca shows its age a bit is the engine range, where you won't find a hybrid in sight. Instead it's a tried-and-tested range of petrols and diesels, where many rivals are ditching diesels altogether.
If most of your driving is around town, the excellent 110PS 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol unit does a decent job of getting you about. It doesn't feel too out of its depth on faster roads either, although start loading it up with passengers and luggage and you'll become very familiar with the end of the throttle pedal travel.
That's where the smoother and more effortless 150PS four-cylinder 1.5 comes in. It's quiet, basically as efficient as the three-cylinder and manages a decent turn of speed. It goes some way to making the 190PS 2.0-litre model, which is DSG and four-wheel drive only, look a bit pointless.
The diesels are also well-proven, efficient and feel more muscular than the petrols thanks to plenty of low-down shove. The 115PS model is fine, but the 150PS version feels more effortless. Neither are particularly quiet (we're becoming less and less used to diesel grumbling in new cars) but they go about their business without vice.
The higher-end petrol is the only model that's auto-only, otherwise you get a choice of a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The manual is a slick and pleasant shift, though while the DSG is quick-shifting and smooth once up to speed it can be a bit jerky and reluctant when getting off the line.
SEAT Ateca 2024: Safety
The SEAT Ateca was awarded five stars for safety by Euro NCAP, but this was way back in 2016. Standard have shifted since then.
The car's occupant crash safety ratings are very good and would still hold up today, while all models get e-Call emergency response and automatic emergency braking as standard. But features like lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring and traffic-sign recognition aren't even optional until you get to the higher trims, which shows the Ateca's age.
SEAT Ateca 2024: Towing
The SEAT Ateca's towing capacity ranges from 1500kg on the 1.0-litre engine to 2100kg on the four-wheel drive diesel. That's a decent figure, but no better than the class average really.

SEAT Ateca 2024: Practicality
The amount of space inside the Ateca is still very competitive several years on from its launch. It doesn't look that big a car from the outside but there's lots of room inside, especially in the back. It means that if you have toddlers in car seats, you won't have to endure the back of your seat being kicked for a two hour journey. The rear doors open nice and wide and there's lots of head room, handy if you've got growing teenagers.
There is a high central tunnel which impedes comfort in the middle seats, however, while it's a shame there's no seatback tables and the option of three individual rear seats like there is in the Karoq. Overall, the Karoq is no roomier but has more practical touches.
The Ateca's boot isn't the largest in its class any more at 510 litres of outright capacity with the seats up, dropping to 485-litres with four-wheel drive. But it's a usefully square shape with a wide tailgate opening. It's a pity there's no variable boot floor to reduce the load lip and allow underfloor storage, while the seats only split 60/40. But there are handy levers to fold the seats easily from the back at least.
SEAT Ateca 2024: Quality and finish
The Ateca has a well finished interior with a nice solid thud to the doors and very little noise on the move, either from the engine or the road. SEAT has clearly worked on refinement with good sound insulation and there's minimal wind noise too - something which can often blight a car this size.
However, there are some harder plastics to be found around the place to remind you this is a cheaper model than a Volkswagen Tiguan. It is a bit dark and drab, something the facelift didn't do much to change.
SEAT Ateca 2024: Infotainment
For the Ateca's facelift the standard infotainment offerings were upgraded to the same systems found in the newer Leon. This means SE models get an 8.25-inch media touchscreen, with every other model getting a 9.2-inch system with sat-nav.
Because the Ateca's dashboard is an older design than the Leon's, the system is embedded in the centre console rather than being placed on top of the dash, which is a neater appearance but does mean it's not quite in your line of sight while driving. Having said that, we do like that there are separate physical buttons for the climate control - in the Leon there's just a row of silly fiddly touch sliders that aren't backlit at night.
Although the touchscreen has smarter graphics and more features than the old system, it's not as easy to use on the move, which is a pity. Still, at least you get wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus wireless phone charging on all but the base trim, meaning you can just connect your phone up and largely bypass the internal system.
High-end versions of the Ateca get a 10.3-inch digital instrument display in place of analogue dials. It's pretty customisable and nice to look at.
SEAT Ateca value for money
SEAT Ateca 2024: Prices
Starting at a touch over £26,000, the Ateca is at the cheaper end of the family SUV spectrum. Yes, the MG HS undercuts it as a budget offering, but if we're talking key rivals than the SEAT is roughly similar in price to the Skoda Karoq and cheaper than the Korean offerings.
There are some expensive higher-end trim levels such as the Xperience variants, but in all honesty the SE Technology trim (one rung up from the base model) offers all the necessary kit.
SEAT Ateca 2024: Running Costs
While it's a pity there's no fuel-sipping hybrid model to really make the Ateca cheap to run, the VW Group engines that power it are notoriously good on fuel.
The base 1.0-litre petrol manages 46.2mpg combined in base SE trim, but the more powerful 1.5 is still capable of 45.3mpg when fitted with a manual gearbox - that figure falls to 43.1mpg with the DSG automatic.
Some higher-end variants can be had with a 190PS 2.0-litre petrol. Auto-only, it's also four-wheel drive only, which dents fuel economy down to a middling 35.2mpg on the WLTP combined cycle.
The diesels are the economy champions, although weirdly the 150PS version of the 2.0 TDI is officially more efficient than the 115PS version, managing 58.5mpg to the lesser one's 57.6. Again, swap in the DSG transmission and there's a slight penalty, while also add four-wheel drive and the figure falls to 49mpg.
We'd avoid the 2.0-litre petrol if road tax is a concern because it's quite expensive in the first year. Other variants are among the cheapest cars in their class when it comes to tax and insurance, if you allow for the lack of a hybrid with the former.

SEAT Ateca unveiled
The Ateca will be available in a wide range of variants. The choice of turbocharged TSI petrol and TDI diesel engines spans from 115PS to 190PS, with either front-wheel or all-wheel-drive, mated to manual or dual-clutch DSG transmissions.
The extensive array of technology options extends from full-LED headlights through a broad portfolio of assistance systems, including some of the very latest Group technology, such as Traffic Jam Assist and Emergency Assist, right through to a package of high-end infotainment systems with eight-inch touchscreens and Full Link connectivity. Three trim levels will offer colours and top-quality materials to suit every taste, with the top-of-the-range being the Ateca Xcellence.
4,360mm long x 1,841mm wide x 1,600mm high, on 2,640mm wheelbase
At 4.36 metres in length, the Ateca offers some of the best use of space in the segment, with a load area that holds 510 litres in its standard configuration, or, 485 litres in versions with all-wheel-drive. Two wheel drive version can be offered with a space saver spare wheel.

Ateca prices revealed
Keenly priced from £17,990, kicking things off, the entry-level S has all the essential kit which a growing family or young-at-heart couple might need. On the inside, the classy interior includes air conditioning, Media System Touch five-inch touchscreen with USB and SD connectivity, leather steering wheel and gearknob, plus split-folding rear seats with reclining function.
On the outside, Ateca’s stylish lines are complemented by 16-inch ‘Design’ alloy wheels and LED daytime running lights.
Moving up to the expected UK best-selling trim level, SE, brings in an array of comfort, convenience and style features, including dual-zone climate control, cruise control, electrically adjustable, heated and folding door mirrors and rear parking sensors.
As buyers have come to expect from the Spanish marque, technology touches also abound. Among them is Full Link (SEAT’s seamless three-in-one connectivity solution for smartphones and tablets), together with an upgraded infotainment in the form of Media System Plus with eight-inch colour touchscreen, USB/Aux-in port, SD card slot, eight speakers, voice control and Bluetooth audio streaming and hands-free system. Externally, the mid-trim level looks sharp with 17-inch ‘Dynamic’ alloy wheels, LED taillights and black roof rails.
Rounding off the initial UK line-up, at least until the ‘First Edition’ version is confirmed in May, is Xcellence. The new flagship trim ushers in a plethora of enticing premium features, including four new innovations for SEAT.
The first is a Connectivity Hub with Wireless Phone Charger which also boosts in-car phone signal, as well as multi-colour interior ambient lighting with LED interior illumination and a choice of eight colours. Penultimately, comes an ‘Ateca’ welcome light silhouette which is projected onto the ground from the bottom of the door mirrors, and finally, SEAT Drive Profile with Driving Experience selector.
This latest evolution of the brand’s tried and tested technology allows the driver to adjust Ateca’s set-up (steering, throttle response and gear change speeds – the latter on DSG-equipped versions) according to road and weather conditions or personal preferences, including Off-road and Snow modes on four-wheel-drive versions.

September 2020
Updated SEAT Ateca priced from £23,670
Orders are now open for the 2020 SEAT Ateca - which features revised looks, new trim levels and an updated engine line-up.
Cosmetic updates include revised front and rear bumpers as well as the introduction of full LED rear lights (including Audi-like sweeping indicators on high-spec models). A revised radiator grille and updated LED headlights means the Ateca now looks more like the latest Leon hatchback and Tarraco SUV.
Inside, the updated Ateca gets an updated media system (with wireless Apple CarPlay), as well as a 12-inch Digital Cockpit on FR Sport and Xperience Lux models. A new steering wheel and improved door card designs contributes to a slightly plusher cabin.
The entry-level model is the SEAT Ateca SE 1.0 TSI manual, which starts from £23,670. The 1.5 TSI 150 SE Technology is expected to be the most popular Ateca, with prices starting from £26,355.
Moving up the range, the Xperience trim level replaces the Xcellence model and starts from £27,750. Standard equipment includes 18-inch alloy wheels, a rear-view camera and the Safe and Driving Pack (with autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and blind spot detection).
The sporty Cupra Ateca has been updated and continues to top the line-up, with prices starting from £39,050. With a 300PS 2.0-litre petrol engine and four-wheel drive, the Cupra Ateca can cover 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds and comes with 19-inch black alloy wheels, 12-inch Digital Cockpit and the 9.2-inch Navigation System Plus.
The standard SEAT Ateca engine line-up includes the usual range of petrol and diesel engines. These include a 1.0-litre TSI petrol, which has been tweaked to improve fuel economy by up to 10 per cent, and the popular 1.5-litre TSI.
Diesel buyers get a choice of a 2.0-litre TDI with 115 or 150PS. The former replaces the old 1.6-litre TDI.
August 2021
SEAT Ateca updated for 2022 model year
The SEAT Ateca XPERIENCE Lux now comes with SEAT’s Pre-Crash Assist safety system as standard. Using data from the forward-facing camera, Pre-Crash Assist prepares the occupants of the car for an oncoming collision by tightening seatbelts and closing windows, in addition to applying the brakes to reduce speed.
Inside the Ateca, both the SE and SE Technology trims (DSG-auto only) get the sports leather steering wheel with gear-shift paddles, making it standard across all trim levels.
The 2022 model year Ateca price starts at £24,560 OTR for Ateca SE 1.0 TSI 110PS, rising to £36,290 for the Ateca XPERIENCE Lux 2.0 TDI DSG-auto 4Drive 150PS.
What to watch out for
New SEAT Ateca 1.0 'Technology' delivered missing two inside lights and a cable behind the dashboard was not secured, causing a ‘bang’ during air/con fan operation. Dealer managed to fix later without removing the dashboard by reattaching the cable to its clips.
20-04-2017:Report of 4 month old SEAT Ateca 1.4 TSI, now with 3500 miles, sarting to suffer juddering through the steering 500 miles previously after gentle application of the brakes. SEAT dealer said the disc brake pads needed replacing. This was done, but owner was asked to return for front caliper boot replacements. Owner advised to seek reassurance that the front discs were not excessively worn.
05-05-2017:Reader told that recommended life of the timing belt of an Ateca 1.4 TSI is 5 years or 100,000 miles, that it is an 8 hour job to replace and that the cost is £1150.
17-06-2017:Report of no space saver spare wheels available for SEAT Ateca, either when originally ordered with the car or as an accessory.
28-07-2017:Complaint of juddering wiper on rear screen of new SEAT Ateca 1.4 TSI. Dealer eventually replaced the blade, but still the same. Possibly caused by the angle at which the wiper blade wipes the screen.
31-08-2017:Report of phantom electrical issues with new SEAT Ateca: Clock randomly goes back one hour and then rectifies itself when car is re-started at a later time. Also the windows of the car randomly come down.
09-09-2018:Report of "deep pitted corrosion" and flaking of the metal of the front brake discs of an April 2017 SEAT Ateca. SEAT dealer charged for fresh brake discs.
05-02-2019:Report of problems with 1.5TSI Eveo Miller Cycle engine in November 2018 SEAT Ateca Excellence 1.5TSI Evo DSG. "If you pull up at a junction the car is still idling and when you accelerate nothing happens (no revs no movement). This has happened 5 times in 3 months. The last time it happened my wife had pulled out into a junction and it stopped accelerating, she was nearly in a severe accident. SEAT has had the car for a week and said there are no fault codes on the car so it is fine. See: /news/owning-1/2019-01/volkswagen-acknowledges-problem-with-15-tsi-evo-engine/
23-05-2019:Report of 2016/66 SEAY Ateca 4x4, now at 24,000 miles and 30 months old, needing a complete set of fresh brake discs and pads due to excessive corrosion, scoring and pitting on all 4. Dealer wanted £630 to replace them. Ridiculously, owner was told, "Well sir you do live in the Sheffield area and with all those hills you will be braking more than normal on all those downhill journeys". "Also the car is made in Spain where they don't get the harsh climate we do so they don't stand up to all that bad weather". Doubly wrong. Braking more than usual normally cleans overnight atmospheric corrosion from brake discs. And the Ateca is built by Skoda at Kvasiny in the Czech Republic, alongside the Škoda Karoq.
24-08-2019:Regarding problems with 1.5TSI engines, owner of Tiguan 1.5TSI wrote, "if you turn off the auto hold and the stop start you will not get the kangarooing or the car switching on and off if you coast the last few yards to a stop with the clutch depressed."

Told no problems found. 2nd September 2019, yellow warning light, start stop system problem. Stop start stopping, then starting on its own. Again told no problem. Owner rejected the car in September 2019 and again on 16th October 2019 in writing to SEAT. Despite several emails they keep telling owner they are dealing with the complaint. Car is at the same garage. Owner has a SEAT courtesy car.
21-02-2020:Report of ABS reluctor ring and ABS wheel sensor replaced under warranty at first service of March 2019 SEAT Ateca 1.5TSI. 'Misting' rear damper also replaced FoC under warranty.
04-06-2021:Report of burnt-out clutch on 1.0 TSI Ateca. The owner was towing a caravan and the clutch failed on a hill. The SEAT dealership has told the owner that they will not repair it under warranty as it was towing a caravan. Senior Technician said 'who told him he could tow a caravan in a 1.0 litre, three-cylinder car?' Towing capacity for this model is 1300kg and the caravan is about 70kg less than this.
10-08-2021:Faulty 360 degree camera on 2019 SEAT Cupra Ateca. Owner bought the car November 2020 and since May 2021 he has had an issue with the 360 degree camera which has come out of alignment by approximately 30 degrees when viewing a birds' eye image of the car on the infotainment screen. Neither the dealer or SEAT UK is willing to pay for the repair, advising that the camera is only covered for the first six months of the warranty.
