Renault Scenic (2009 – 2016) Review

Renault Scenic (2009 – 2016) At A Glance

3/5

+Comfortable for seven. Great chain-cam 1.4 TCe 130 engine. Brilliant new chain-cam 1.6 dCi 130 diesel engine from mid 2011.

-2.0 dCi torque a bit disappointing.

Insurance Groups are between 11–26
On average it achieves 77% of the official MPG figure

Just as Renault was first in Europe with a full size MPV (the innovative Espace), it was also first in Europe with a mid size MPV. Now we are into the third generation of Renault Scenic. So is it just change for the sake of change, or have they managed to make it significantly better?

For marketing reasons, the UK gets the 7-seater Grand Scenic first, in May, and the shorter 5-seater Scenic will follow in July. The new Renault Grand Scenic is remarkable value for money, with prices starting at £1,060 less than before, for more car. £14,995 for the base model 1.6 Extreme undercuts the worthy, but van-derived VW Caddy Maxi Life by £1,000.

Obviously, as features increase and better engines find their way under the bonnets, Grand Scenics start to get dearer. Diesels start at £16,495, for the lowest emission 7-seater you can buy (138g/km). While the best engine (in my opinion, anyway) is the chain-cam, water-cooled turbo petrol 1.4TCE 130, from £17,595.

Renault Scenic (2009 – 2016) handling and engines

Just as Renault was first in Europe with a full size MPV (the innovative Espace), it was also first in Europe with a mid size MPV. Now we are into the third generation of Scenic.

The centre three seats slide, tumble and completely remove individually. The rearmost pair of seats individually pull out of the load deck very easily indeed and are decently comfortable for a 5 9 adult (me) to sit in, at an 89 degree angle, with plenty of room for my hat.

All Grand Scenics offer front and rear floor storage boxes, storage trays under the front seats, height-adjustable drivers seat, multi adjustable steering wheel and a digital dash (of which more later). Theyre all loaded with safety kit, including ABS with EBD and Brake Assist, ESP, front and rear curtain airbags, front airbags, ISOFIX child seat mounting, etc. All come with standard aircon.

Start spending a bit more and you get more spec. You can actually see most of it in the video, but Id still like to mention the stunning TFT screen dashboard display, from Expression spec up, and the fantastic value-for-money Carminat Tom Tom Satnav that warns of speed limits, and speed cameras, is easily updatable by SD card, yet costs just £450 as an optional extra.

The specs and dimensions are covered below so you can check exactly what you get for your money there.

We drove two specs and engines. A Privilege with the 2.0 litre 160PS Renault/Nissan Alliance diesel (list price £22,695). And a Dynamique with the TCe 130 1.4 litre petrol engine (list price £18,595).

Both cars rode well on their new Megane suspension, though the diesel disappointed me. It was a good cruiser, sensibly geared, but the weight of the engine made it less responsive, breaking into understeer in typical MPV fashion. And though it developed a strong 380Nm torque, there wasnt much of that low down. Let the revs die below 1,500 and youre in trouble, faced with either a lack of response or a near stall.

The 1.4TCe, on the other hand, is astonishingly good. Quiet, refined, and much more flexible at low revs, even pulling cleanly from 1,000rpm after rounding a roundabout in 5th.

It figures quite well, too, at the same 173g/km as the 2.0 litre diesel (you need the 1.9 130 or 1.5 106 diesels to get under 160g/km), but 38.7mpg combined v/s 50.4 combined for the 2.0 diesel. Factor in the 10% higher price of diesel fuel and the difference shrinks a bit, while the 1.4TCe is nicer to drive and cheaper to buy.

May 2011

New chain cam 1.6 litre 130PS Eco 2 'Energy' diesel engine launched for UK at £20,900 for the Scenic and £22,200 for the Grand Scenic. 130PS, 320Nm torque from 1,750rpm, with 80% available from 1,500rpm and enough below that to run at low rpm. Employs three stage warm up for more efficient cold starts, low pressure cooled EGR, variable displacement oil pump, variable swirl and stop/start technology to emit just 115g/km CO2, with EC combined figure of 64.2mpg.

3-12-2011: Scenic and Grand Scenic facelifted More contemporary front end on both models, with gloss black and chrome detailing, standard LED daytime running lights, new rear lights. Two new engines: 1.2 TCe 115 petrol and 68.9mpg 1.5 dCi 110 Stop & Start.

Other improvements include the introduction of two new equipment items: Visio System by Renault (lane departure warning and automatic headlight low/high beam), plus Hill Start Assist. Two new body colours will also be available, Azzurro Blue and Damask Red.

Following the trend begun by the petrol 1.4 TCe 130 and 1.5 dCi 110, and most recently the arrival of the 1.6 dCi 130, the world’s most powerful and frugal diesel engine of its size, Scenic welcomes two new engines. The first, 1.5 dCi 110 Stop & Start, is an enhanced version of the French marque’s core diesel engine.

Benefitting from several clever technologies derived from Formula 1 (Stop & Start, brake energy regeneration), it combines record low CO2 emissions of 105 grams per kilometre (reduced by 23g/km), and a 12 per cent saving in fuel consumption (up 11.3 mpg to 68.9), yet higher torque (260Nm at 1,750rpm; a gain of 20Nm) compared with the existing 1.5 dCi 110.

From spring 2012, the five- and seven-seater versions of Scénic will also be the first Renaults to receive the brand new 1.2 TCe 115 petrol engine. Due to gradually replace the 1.6 VVT 110, it offers low CO2 emissions (135g/km), 190Nm of torque (up 39Nm) and fuel consumption improved by a fifth, up 11.4 mpg to 49.6.

Joining them will be the highly acclaimed 1.6 dCi 130 Stop & Start, which itself boasts 20% better fuel consumption than its former 1.9 dCi 130 stablemate, together with greater performance and even lower emissions.

January 2012

Renault released UK pricing and specification for its Scénic 2012 range, as part of its revised model line-up from 1st February. Prices for the newly facelifted versions of Europe’s number one compact MPV start from £18,325 on-the-road for Scénic and £19,725 for Grand Scénic.

The new Renault Scénic and Grand Scénic models for 2012 are sharper in design, more economical and boast a number of equipment enhancements.

Both versions of Scénic feature a revised look with more contemporary front styling, plus gloss black and chrome detailing, standard low level LED daytime running lights and new rear lights. The range also welcomes two new body colours, Azzurro Blue and Damask Red.

Scénic and Grand Scénic 2012 is launched with just one trim level – Dynamique TomTom. This continues to have class-leading levels of equipment and for 2012, on top of its core equipment: 16” alloy wheels with 205/60 R16 tyres, auto lights and wipers, Bluetooth™, cruise control, Carminat TomTom Live satellite navigation, it now includes rear parking sensors and LED daytime running lights as standard.

To make Scénic and Grand Scénic 2012 even more appealing, all are eligible for the Renault 4+ programme worth £900, which launches on 1st February 2012. The tempting package offers all retail customers a comprehensive four-year/100,000 mile warranty, free routine servicing for four years/48,000 miles, four years roadside cover and up to four years finance (lease or PCP, subject to status).

Available as an option on all versions of the Dynamique TomTom (except the 1.6 VVT 110), a new Luxe Pack offers some impressive equipment worth considerably in excess of its £1,500 price tag. Included in it are 17” ‘Sari’ alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, BOSE Energy Efficient sound system with nine speakers, digital amplifier, sliding centre console, electrically folding door mirrors and the Visio System.

The two new Scénics each play an important part in achieving Renault’s target to become Europe’s number one manufacturer with regard to the CO2 emissions of its range, without detracting from performance.

Two new Renault engines debut in the Scénic 2012 range, the 1.2 TCe 115 petrol (available from April) and 1.5 dCi 110 Stop & Start, both with impressive performance, economy and emission figures. The latter offers class-leading 68.9 mpg (combined cycle). The new downsized engines offer greater performance and fuel efficiency through smaller cubic capacity engine innovation and technologies derived from Formula 1 (Stop & Start, brake energy regeneration).

What to watch out for

17-10-2013:

Report of 1.6 dCi 130 (in a Qashqai 4WD) failing due to a blown injector causing the lubrication on cylinder No 1 to wash away and wreck the engine.

14-11-2013:

Digital dash display failure reported on 4 year old with 30k miles. Initially quoted £700, cut to £150 after goodwill contribution from Renault. (First report of this on the 2009 Scenic).

01-06-2014:

Report of intermittent hesitation problem with EDC of 2012 Renault Scenic 1.5 dCi auto. Only momentary, then seems to clear. May be due to electric parking brake sticking.

25-10-2014:

2011 Renault Scenic 1.5 dCi engine management system cutting out engine. Happened 4 times in 6 months. Diagnostics shows nothing. May be same reason as above (1-6-2014). Switch off and re-start and everything fine.

27-03-2015:

Spring of misfuel preventing fuel filler of 42k mile 2011 Renault Scenic failed, resulting in an MoT failure. Dealer demanded £240 to replace the entire fuel filler rather than merely the spring.

13-04-2015:

Timing belt of 2009 Grand Scenic 1.5dCi 106 failed at 5 years 5 months old and 48,500 miles, despite Renault's service sheet stating it needs to be replaced at 6 years or 96k miles whichever comes first. Apparently a known defect in France where French courts have compelled Renault to replace the engines FoC, but in the UK Renault says this is only for certain engine numbers. Offered 20% of £6,000 cost of new engine. Recommended to push for 50%. Other Scenic owners should avoid trouble by changing their belts at 5 years or 60k miles, whichever comes first.

11-06-2015:

Both wiper motors failed simultaneously on a 2009 Scenic.

27-04-2016:

Report of timing belt of 2011 Renault Scenic 1.5 dCi failing at 36,000 miles. Renault contributed 60% of cost of repair leaving owner to pay £2,000.

04-02-2018:

Report of EDC of 2015 Renault Scenic 1.5 dCi EDC wearing out at 64,000 otherwise trouble-free miles from new of mainly medium and long distance unrushed driving. Renault dealer quoted £3276 to replace it entirely, but may only need a clutch pack and dual mass flywheel.

16-07-2018:

Repeated problems reported with electromechanical parking brake of April 2016 Renault Grand Scenic: Calipers replaced 16-3-2017, cable and connectors replaced 21-4-2017, parking brake computer replaced 3-5-2017, electronic fault with brakes seen to 21-6-2018 and battery replaced; 2-7-2018 multiple electrical faults reported, car cannot be driven, awaiting 2nd replacement rear braker callipers. Additionally problem of rattling driver's window reported 18-5-2018 andf 13-6-2018.

03-08-2018:

Report of check auto gearbox message on dash of 2012 Renault Grand Scenic at 43k miles. Car wouldn't start and gearbox stuck in Park. Renault diagnosed need for new automatic gearbox ecu. Wand £1050 inclusive, plus £99 diagnosis fee.

21-12-2018:

Report of failure of "automatic" transmission (EDC?) on ex Motability 2011 Renault Grand Scenic at 17,750 miles. Possibly due to driver abuse by holding it on the brakes in 'Drive'.

16-03-2019:

Report of clutch and electromechanical parking brake problem on (unspecified age) Renault Scenic 1.5 dCi 110 Dynamique TomTom. Two weeks ago, whilst on a ramp leaving a car park, the electric handbrake would not engage. Owner applied footbrake and dipped the clutch but was unable to engage any gears. After several attempts and pumping the clutch pedal he was able to drive the car. Local garage replaced front discs and pads in case this was the problem. Later, also leaving a car park with a slight slope (if this is relevant), the parkng brake would not disengage and again owner could not engage gear. After pumping the clutch repeatedly he was able to select a gear and finally the parking brake released. He went to the garage and they test drove the car but cannot suggest what the problem is.

01-08-2019:

Report of timing chain failing on 2013 Renault Grand Scenic at 56,000 miles. (Reader did not specify if a 1.4TCe 130 or a 1.6DCI 130). Car was bought used in 2017 with apparent service history. Replacement cost £1,600, which suggests no severe engine damage from the failure.

What does the Renault Scenic (2009 – 2016) cost?
