Renault Kadjar (2015 – 2022) Review
Renault Kadjar (2015 – 2022) At A Glance
The Renault Kadjar is one of the many family SUVs you can buy. Launched in 2015, then updated in 2018, it shares a platform with the Nissan Qashqai, but offers more space than its British-built sibling. Other cars of this ilk include the Kia Sportage, Honda CR-V, Peugeot 3008 and Skoda Karoq. Find out how it stacks up in our Renault Kadjar review.
When is a door not a door? When it’s ajar. When is a Nissan Qashqai not a Nissan Qashqai? When it’s a Renault Kadjar. Here all day, etc, etc.
As jokes go, that’s pretty lame, but it highlights the fact that the Renault Kadjar is closely related to the all-conquering Qashqai. But while the Nissan Qashqai remains the UK’s most popular SUV, the Renault Kadjar has the last laugh by offering more interior space. You could say it’s a bit of a cracker.
Launched in 2015, the Renault Kadjar sits between the Captur and the Koleos in Renault’s range of family SUVs, built to take on the likes of the Qashqai, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Peugeot 3008, Skoda Karoq, Seat Ateca and, well, the list goes on.
So why should you choose the Renault Kadjar over any of its rivals? That’s a tough one, because these vehicles all feel fundamentally very similar. It all comes down to price, your proximity to a local dealer and your fondness for a particular brand.
Maybe Renault’s new five-year warranty will help. At the end of 2019, Renault introduced a five-year, 100,000-mile warranty, so if you buy a Renault Kadjar registered on or after 18 December 2019, it will be covered for, well, five years. It’s not quite at Korean car levels of warranty cover, but it nudges the Kadjar ahead of the Qashqai, Karoq and 3008.
It looks reasonably upmarket, especially following the facelift in 2018. This also improved the quality of the interior, which wasn’t the Kadjar’s strongest point when it was launched in 2015. On the plus side, the Kadjar is well-equipped if you avoid the entry-level cars, with higher trim levels feeling positively lavish.
There’s a choice of petrol and diesel engines, with the post-facelift units the most impressive. The TCe petrol engine is perfect for urban driving, while the Blue dCi diesel is ideal for longer trips and carrying heavy loads. A four-wheel-drive variant sits at the top of the range, which is ideal if you live in a part of the country where the weather can be a bit ‘seasonal’.
The driving experience is, at best, relaxing, but could also be described as forgettable. It’s not a car that likes to be pushed, so you’ll soon learn to take it easy. Ride quality is generally good, but suffers a little on cars with 17-inch alloy wheels.
Practicality is excellent, with the Renault Kadjar boasting a larger boot than the platform-sharing Nissan Qashqai. The cabin is light and airy, with enough space for five. It’s not class-leading, but it’s fine for most families. Post-facelift versions are more stylish, more efficient and more desirable.
Overall, this is a thoroughly competent and respectable take on the tried and tested family SUV formula. Still want that Qashqai?
Renault Kadjar (2015 – 2022) handling and engines
- Engines range from 1.2 TCe to 1.7 dCi 150
- Readers report Real MPG to be between 25–68 mpg
Renault Kadjar (2015 – 2022): Handling and ride quality
While the GT Line might look sporty, in reality it’s anything but. That said, because it rides on 19-inch alloy wheels, the ride quality is less supple, so you tend to feel any imperfections in the road. It dilutes the laid-back appeal of the Kadjar – and in some cases it makes the interior trim plastics squeak and rattle.
The Play and S Edition models also ride on 19-inch rims, so it’s left to the Play trim to demonstrate the typically French cushion-soft ride quality. Elsewhere, the steering lacks the feel and there’s a degree of body-roll when cornering. On the plus side, the light steering and high driving position combine to make city driving a doddle.

Renault Kadjar (2015 – 2022): Engines
The Kadjar launched with a 1.2-litre TCe four-cylinder petrol engine with 130PS. A more powerful 165PS version arrived in 2017, before the 2018 update introduced a new 1.2-litre TCe turbocharged engine to replace the old unit. It’s smoother and more efficient than before, with 140PS and 160PS outputs available.
Pre-facelift Kadjars were offered with 110PS 1.5 dCi and 130PS 1.6 dCi diesels. A new 1.7 dCi arrived in 2018, replacing the old 1.6-litre unit. It offers a healthy 150PS, while the 1.5-litre was modified to deliver 115PS.
In all cases, the post-facelift units are superior to the old engines, but each one has been engineered to sip fuel, rather than set pulses racing.
Renault Kadjar (2015 – 2022): Safety
Euro NCAP awarded the Renault Kadjar a maximum five-star safety rating. All versions come with multiple airbags and two Isofix points in the back. Cruise control with a speed limiter function is also standard, but adaptive cruise control is not an option.
Most versions get front and rear parking sensors, but it’s worth noting that a reversing camera was only standard on the range-topping Signature S Nav before the facelift. Today, a camera is standard on all except the Play model.
Renault Kadjar (2015 – 2022): Towing
Models powered by the dCi diesel engine offer a maximum towing capacity of 1800kg, but this drops to 1500kg in the petrol versions. Thanks to 340Nm of torque and the security of four-wheel-drive, the Kadjar GT Line dCi 150 4x4 is the best tow car in the range.

Renault Kadjar (2015 – 2022): Practicality
The Renault Kadjar boasts a luggage capacity of 472 litres, which is 40 litres more than you’ll find in the Nissan Qashqai.
The rear seats of the Renault Kadjar split 60/40, increasing storage capacity to 1,478 litres once they’re folded. We’d recommend a higher trim level, as these cars get an adjustable boot floor, which can be used as a divider or to keep valuables hidden from view. Top models get a lever inside the boot for folding the rear seats.
It’s also big in the cabin, where there’s enough room for two adults in the back, or three children along the bench. Even an adult won’t complain too much about the middle seat. As you’d expect from a family SUV, there are plenty of storage areas, including large door pockets and a spacious cubby in the centre console. Overall, the Renault Kadjar feels like a roomy car, especially in the front.
Renault Kadjar (2015 – 2022): Quality and finish
Looks can be deceptive, as some of the plastics feel cheap, and you might experience squeaks and rattles on the move.
Things improved following the 2018 facelift, with Renault replacing some of the cheap plastics with higher-quality materials. It’s still far from premium, but the quality is more befitting of the rather classy and understated design of the cabin. Only the range-topping models get full leather seats, although mid-range models boast a surprisingly good combination of artificial leather and cloth.
Renault Kadjar (2015 – 2022): Infotainment
We’d avoid the Expression+ trim on the pre-facelift Renault Kadjar, as this comes with a basic DAB digital radio and not much else besides. Other versions get a seven-inch touchscreen with Renault’s R-Link 2 multimedia system. Features include sat-nav, DAB and Bluetooth. It’s adequate, but the display looks a bit nasty and the menus can be slow to load.
Again, 2018 facelift cars are better. All versions get a seven-inch touchscreen, and while R-Link 2 continues to frustrate, the addition of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto makes it easier to live with. The GT Line model boasts an excellent Bose premium sound system.
Renault Kadjar (2015 – 2022) value for money
Renault Kadjar (2015 – 2022): Prices
Renault Kadjar prices start from around £22,000, but the higher trim levels break the £30,000 mark. The cheapest Kadjar is the Play TCe 140, which has a price tag of £21,995. Opting for the automatic version increases the price to £23,595. The Play Blue dCi is slightly more expensive, at £23,795, with the automatic transmission adding £1600 to the price.
Iconic trim starts at £23,795 for the TCe 140 engine, or £25,395 for the same engine but with an automatic transmission. There’s also a TCe 160 version for £24,795, and a Blue dCi 115, which costs £25,595 as a manual, or £27,195 as an automatic.
S Edition prices start at £25,295, rising to £28,695 for the most expensive version. The usual engine and transmission options are available. The flagship GT Line delivers more choice, including the option of four-wheel-drive. Indeed, the range-topping GT Line Blue dCi 150 4x4 costs £32,295. GT Line prices start from £26,795.
Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) deals start from less than £300 a month. This is based on the entry-level Play TCe 140 with a four-year contract, a deposit of £2000 and a mileage cap of 6000 a year. You can adjust the monthly payment to suit your budget.
Used prices have dropped below £8000, but these cars tend to be high-mileage examples in a basic trim. You’ll need to find at least £12,000 for a post-facelift version. It’s worth noting that Renault introduced a new five-year warranty at the end of 2019, so this should provide some reassurance when buying used.
Renault Kadjar (2015 – 2022): Running Costs
The following figures are based on the new WLTP standards, so they should be more representative of what you can expect to achieve on a daily basis.
We’d recommend the TCe petrol engine for urban driving and short trips. The 140PS version is good for 42.2mpg to 42.8mpg with a manual gearbox, or 41.5mpg to 43.5mpg with an automatic transmission. The 160PS version is marginally more efficient, offering 42.6mpg to 44.1mpg.
The Blue dCi diesel engine continues to fly the flag for frugality. It should return 54.3mpg to 56.5mpg with a manual gearbox, and if anything, the automatic transmission should be a touch more economical. Even the four-wheel-drive version is able to nudge 50mpg. That’s excellent for a four-wheel-drive SUV.
Insurance groups range from 17 for Blue dCi 115 models, to 24 and 25 for the Blue dCi 150 versions. Other versions sit somewhere in between, but you shouldn’t have too many problems getting cheap cover on the Kadjar.
Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) costs between £215 and £540 in the first year for most models, although the 4x4 version costs £870. All models drop to £150 in year two.

March 2015
Renault Kadjar officially launched
Powered by small-capacity Renault dCi diesel and TCe petrol engines which perfectly meet today’s demand for downsized power units which lack nothing in performance while delivering exceptional efficiency. Fuel economy and CO 2 figures are as high as 74.3mpg and as low as 99g/km, equalling the best-in-class. There are two- and four-wheel drive versions and manual and automatic transmissions to meet the needs of any buyer. (4WD only available with dCi 130 diesel engine.)
Up-to-the-minute active safety features will help the driver avoid low-speed accidents, stay in lane on highways, park, see in the dark and remain within speed limits, while the R-Link 2 multimedia system ensures the car is always fully connected to the outside world. The full UK model range, specifications and pricing will be announced closer to the UK on-sale date in the Autumn.
Courtesy handles in the boot release the ‘Easy Break’ 60:40 split rear seats, and the front passenger seat tips forward to form a small table or make space for longer items to be carried.
Two load area configurations are possible, giving either a flat floor or a capacity of 472 litres (seats upright), and the boot can be divided into three areas to prevent items from moving during transit. There is also 30 litres of storage space within the cabin, which provides passenger space on a par with anything in the class.
The Renault Kadjar offers buyers a choice of two dCi diesel engines or one TCe turbocharged petrol unit which demonstrate that off-road capability need not cost the earth. It has fuel economy of up to 74.3mpg and CO 2 emissions as low as 99g/km – equalling the class best. A six-speed EDC dual-clutch automatic gearbox is available with the dCi 110 engine, and with the 1.6dCi diesel engine, Kadjar is available with four-wheel drive.
The dCi 110, with a capacity of 1.5 litres and a power output of 110hp, now has steel pistons which reduce internal friction and reduce CO 2 by three per cent. Fuel economy and CO 2 figures are similar for both the manual and automatic versions.
All-New Kadjar is also available with the 1.6-litre dCi 130 engine, with power and torque figures of 130hp and 320 Nm, and the 1.2-litre TCe petrol unit which, with power and torque outputs of 130hp and 205Nm, produces similar performance to a normally aspirated 2.0-litre unit. It features direct fuel injection and an integrated manifold for outstanding torque at low revs.
All three engines are allied to Renault’s Start & Stop technology to ensure that they use no fuel and emit no CO 2 when the car is stationary in traffic, and are equipped with energy recovery systems which become effective when decelerating or braking.
Other fuel-saving, emissions-reducing technologies include latest-generation high-pressure fuel injection systems, low inertia turbochargers, friction reduction and the Renault Driving eco 2 functions to help the driver adopt a more efficient driving style. All three meet EU6 emissions regulations, which has entailed the fitting of a NOx trap and particulate filter to the diesels.
Kadjar also features a number of aerodynamic aids which reduce CO 2 emissions by 4g/km at typical motorway speeds. They include wind tunnel-honed wheel rims, door mirrors, spoilers, underbody fairings; vents to reduce turbulence in the wheel arches; and active flaps which ensure that engine cooling is provided only as necessary.
Kadjar has 190mm of ground clearance and approach and departure angles of 18 and 25 degrees respectively, ensuring outstanding all-roads capability. Two-wheel-drive versions will be available with Renault’s Extended Grip traction control system so that they, too, can venture further off-road than their drive layout might suggest. They also be available with 17-inch Mud and Snow tyres with a specific tread pattern (depending on final individual market specifications).
The 1.6dCi four-wheel-drive models use the Renault-Nissan Alliance Electronic Traction Control (ETC) system, which drives a coupler to deliver torque to the wheels according to speed and level of grip. A rotary switch gives the driver access to three different driving modes. The selected mode is displayed on the dashboard.
‘LOCK’ places the transmission in four-wheel drive and transfers 50 per cent of torque to the rear. It functions at speeds of up to 25mph and is recommended for rough, uneven or low-grip conditions.
‘AUTO’ automatically distributes torque as necessary, and can transmit 50 per cent to the rear.
‘2WD’ locks out the rear wheels and is the best setting for dry, grippy roads.

Extra engine and transmission added to Renault Kadjar range
The 165PS turbo-charged petrol engine provides a maximum speed of 127mph and a 0-60mph time of 9.2 seconds and is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Economy and emissions are comparable with those of the TCe 130 engine with CO2 emissions as low as 134g/km and economy of up to 47.1mpg (NEDC Combined). The engine can be specified from Dynamique Nav trim level upwards. Prices from £22,915 OTR.
The introduction of a two-wheel drive dCi 130 Auto X-Tronic offers buyers greater choice when it comes to automatic transmissions. The Auto X-Tronic is a Continuously Variable Transmission mated to the Kadjar’s 1.6 dCi 130. The Auto X-Tronic transmission provides CO 2 emissions as low as 123g/km and an economy of up to 58.9mpg (NEDC Combined). It is available from Dynamique Nav upwards and is priced from £26,015 OTR with ordering open now.
Hands free functionality has been upgraded from Dynamique Nav and above with the introduction of a Hands free Keycard with Walkaway Function. The driver can keep the key in their bag or pocket and when walking towards the Kadjar, the daytime running lights will turn on, the wing mirrors will unfold, puddle lights will illuminate and the car will unlock. When walking away from the Kadjar, the daytime running lights will turn off, the wing mirrors will close and the car will lock. This is an upgrade from the previous keycard, which locked and unlocked the car whilst still in the driver’s bag or pocket.

(In the A-Class it develops 163PS and 250Nm torque.) This is also reported to be the case for the Nissan Qashqai. The 1.2 TCe has been dropped from the Dacia Duster. Renault Kadjar revamped
New features include a wider grille with new chrome inserts. Top trim levels gain a shark fin antenna. 2019 Kadjar is available with two new types of 17- and 19-inch wheels, along with three new colours: Oural Green, Iron Blue and Highland Grey.
The central part of the dashboard has a new multimedia touch screen with capacitive technology for a brighter display and greater sensitivity. Measuring seven inches diagonally, this screen displays the R-LINK 2 system, with the controls on either side.
Redesigned seats now feature length adjustment. They also include double density foam to enhance comfort and prevent fatigue on long journeys, and firmer side reinforcements provide better support. The sliding front armrest adapts to all body shapes.
Door inner panels have been completely reworked. The controls for the electric door mirrors and one-touch windows are now on the same panel, which includes backlighting for use at night. Positioned under the inserts with their satin chrome trim, the door bins are now big enough to hold a large bottle of water. Air vents on the back of the central console provide improved thermal comfort for passengers in the rear.
The R-LINK 2 connected multimedia system includes a smartphone mirroring function, compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Drivers can display their favourite driving-compatible apps directly on the cabin screen for greater safety and more ergonomic use.
The 2019 Kadjar adopts the 1.3 chain cam TCe engine first fitted on Scénic and subsequently deployed on Captur, Mégane and Mercedes-Benz A Class. The engine has torque up to 250Nm.
The TCe GPF engine is available in four versions: TCe 140 GPF manual transmission, TCe 140 EDC GPF, TCe 160 GPF manual transmission and TCe 160 GPF EDC.
The 1.5 litre belt cam Blue dCi 115 engine has power increased by 5PS and torque by 10Nm. Initially available with a manual transmission, the dual-clutch EDC transmission comes later.
The 1.6 litre chain cam Blue dCi 150 has output increased by 20PS. Comes with a manual 6-speed transmission and available in 4x2 and 4x4 versions.
