Peugeot 308 SW Review 2024

Peugeot 308 SW At A Glance

4/5
Honest John Overall Rating
The latest Peugeot 308 SW is a strikingly designed and likeable addition to the class. The well-appointed cabin and composed drive are successfully brought over from the hatch, as are petrol, diesel and hybrid engine options. We wish Peugeot had better balanced boot space with rear seat room, however.

+Distinctive styling and classy cabin. Lots of standard equipment. No weak link in the engine range. Good comfort and refinement.

-Rear seat space is lacking. Hybrid's gearbox and brakes aren't perfect. Taller folk might struggle with the driving position.

New prices start from £28,185
On average it achieves 0% of the official MPG figure

While the SUV is very much a global phenomenon, estate cars are largely a uniquely European prospect. The new Peugeot 308 SW has just joined a still pretty crowded class of hatchback-based estates. In this review we'll see if it manages to blend design appeal and practicality as well as the best in the class.

Peugeot has a long and rich history of building family estate cars, but we can't think of any that have turned up the style factor as much as the latest 308 SW.

Just as the striking new 308 hatchback could be considered one of the most desirable options in its class, the SW version (which stands for station wagon) certainly cuts a dash as load-luggers go. It might be even more dramatic than the hatch with its elongated side creases, sharply sloping side window line and shapely tailgate.

Rivals for the 2022 Peugeot 308 SW include the Toyota Corolla Touring Sports, the Ford Focus Estate and the ever-present VW Group trio; the VW Golf Estate, Skoda Octavia Estate and the SEAT Leon Estate. Arguably the Peugeot competes with the slightly more flamboyant Leon than it does the more conservative Golf and Octavia.

The Peugeot 308 is closely related to the latest Vauxhall Astra, but while the latter might be a lot less bland on the outside than it used to be, it's clear its French relative has the edge for cabin visuals. The 308 SW's angular dash and classy material mix combines with new technology including a brand new infotainment system and digital dials on every model. Just make sure you get on with the quirky 'i-Cockpit' driving position.

The SW also gets a 55mm longer wheelbase than the hatch, resulting in a little more rear seat space. It's still a fair way off the class best in that respect, though. The trade off is a rather large 608-litre boot, which trumps some key rivals despite the Peugeot's design focus.

Peugeot has a model-by-model approach to powertrain choices, particularly when it comes to electrification. It's why the smaller 208 is available in fully electric e-208 form, while the bigger 3008 SUV comes with plug-in hybrid (PHEV) options. For now, the 308 SW comes in petrol, diesel and PHEV form, but the 308 will be the first Peugeot to comes with both hybrid and electric options when a battery-powered model arrives next year.

As it is, you'll be well served whichever engine you go for. Even the base 1.2-litre petrol is punchy, while the diesel is a bit old-school but frugal. The two plug-in hybrids command a price premium but promise impressive efficiency, even if they're not quite as satisfying to drive due to some quirks.

Still, the Peugeot 308 SW is pretty good to drive overall. It strikes a nice balance between ironing out the worst potholes and not feeling too soft and floaty in the bends, while refinement is strong. There's plenty of substance to go with the style, then.

Peugeot 308 SW handling and engines

Driving Rating
There are sharper handling and more comfortable family estates, but the Peugeot 308 strikes a nice balance between the two extremes. We like the engine range, too.

Peugeot 308 SW 2024: Handling and ride quality

The extra 50kg or so that the Peugeot 308 SW brings over the hatch really doesn't make a discernible difference to the ride or handling. Indeed the main difference is simply that it's a bit harder to park due to the extra length.

The small steering wheel helps the 308 feel a bit more agile than it would otherwise, with keen turn-in, decent grip levels and confidence inspiring levels of body control. Granted, a Focus or Leon is more entertaining still, but the Peugeot is still a nice steer. The plug-in hybrids are around 300kg heavier, though, so feel that bit more lumpen.

The 308 is noticeably less firm-riding than a Leon, however. It does a pretty good job of ironing out the worst potholes even on the bigger wheel options, despite a touch of suspension noise. We like its overall dynamic balance.

Despite that increase in length parking isn't too much of an issue. The 308 SW seems to have a slightly better view out the back than the hatch, but it's not brilliant. Happily you get rear parking sensors even at entry level, front sensors and a camera on mid-spec cars and a full 360-degree camera system (with self parking aid) on GT Premium.

Peugeot 308 SW 2024: Engines

Like most brands these days, Peugeot has 'rightsized' its engine range, reducing choice and focusing on key sellers. Interestingly you get just one petrol and one diesel, but two plug-in hybrids.

The petrol is the purists choice in a way, even if there's no manual gearbox option on any 308. The 1.2-litre three-cylinder Puretech 130 unit is easily the lightest variant of the 308 SW, and it feels keener in the bends.

Yet the modest output doesn't result in sluggish performance - remember, this engine is even used in the 5008 seven-seater. It'll do 0-60 in just under ten seconds, feels punchy in the mid-range and is well-paired with the eight-speed automatic gearbox. It even makes a rorty noise.

The 130PS 1.5-litre BlueHDI diesel doesn't make a rorty noise, just a gruff one. It's not unrefined, but it feels and sounds a bit old-tech these days, and is actually slower from 0-60mph than the petrol despite having more torque. Blame the gearing, which gives it around a 20% economy boost over the petrol.

Expect the two PHEVs to be popular. We've only driven the 225PS version, but the 180PS unit isn't much slower on paper and can be had for significantly less money. It'll also (officially at least) do over 40 miles of electric range, with the 225 managing 39, making it pricier for company car tax.

It's noticeably stronger than the petrol or diesel models, and the punchy 110PS electric motor means you can get up to speed quite easily without waking the engine. It'll cruise very quietly, too, but we have a couple of complaints.

The first is common with PHEVs, in that it isn't as responsive when you want a glob of power to overtake as pure combustion models. The gearbox is a little slow to kick down, and sometimes hangs onto gears for too long. Also, the brakes take some getting used to, with inconsistent pedal feel making stopping smoothly a fine art.

Peugeot 308 SW 2024: Safety

Euro NCAP has yet to crash any Peugeot 308 into a wall yet, but we've no reason to think it won't perform well.

There's standard automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, although you'll want Allure trim and above to allow it to also spot cyclists and work better at night.

Lane assist, a drowsiness alert and speed limit recognition are also standard, with adaptive cruise control (that works at low and high speeds) offered on Allure Premium trim with rear cross traffic alert and blind spot monitoring. Lane positioning assist, which can steer itself within a lane (with your hands on the wheel) comes on GT Premium trim.

Peugeot 308 SW 2024: Towing

You'll want either the diesel or plug-in hybrid 308 SWs for towing, as they have a reasonable braked trailer capacity of 1550kg and 1500kg respectively. The petrol with its miserly 680kg isn't much use.

Engine MPG 0-62 CO2

1.2 Puretech 136 MHEV - - 109–112 g/km

Peugeot 308 SW interior

Interior Rating
A striking dash design, lots of kit and generally nice-feeling materials means the Peugeot 308 SW feels a cut above most rivals. We like the new infotainment, too, but the driving position won't work for everyone and we'd like more space in the back.

Peugeot 308 SW 2024: Practicality

Unsurprisingly, you get more metal for your money with the Peugeot 308 SW over the hatch. Its dimensions make it 4636mm long, 1852mm wide and 1450mm tall. It's about average size-wise for the class, and around 270mm longer than the regular 308.

Importantly, there's a 55mm longer wheelbase than the hatch, meaning the SW is (slightly) more generous with legroom for rear passengers. It's not dramatically better, though, and means those of a height of six foot or above won't feel as comfortable as they would in a Golf or Focus estate.

At least headroom is also a little better than the hatch as the roof is longer, while smaller adults or children won't complain. There's of course two Isofix mountings, while space up front is plentiful thanks to a wider cabin than the old model.

One bone of contention is Peugeot's unique 'iCockpit' driving position, which sees a shrunken steering wheel sitting below the dials rather than in line with them. It means the wheel is mounted lower than it might be in rivals, which despite its smaller size results in compromises for taller adults. This 6ft 3in tester had to cut off the lower 20% of the dial display with the top of the wheel rim in order to keep enough distance between the wheel and my knees.

Still, that only applies to some, and the layout works well for most people. We also like the amount of storage, with good size door bins, a central armrest cubby and a glovebox that, finally, doesn't have the fuse box taking up half the space. That's something that has annoyed us in right hand-drive Peugeots for at least twenty years.

The rear seats of the 308 SW split 40/20/40, and do so easily via boot-mounted levers. With those seats up the boot is a competitive (but not quite class-leading) 608-litre capacity, and has two separate underfloor storage compartments if you don't go for the plug-in hybrids.

Peugeot 308 SW 2024: Quality and finish

Peugeot has done a decent job of making the 308 SW feel a bit more upmarket than its related siblings, the Citroen C4 and Vauxhall Astra. There's greater use of soft-touch materials, some tactile fabric or stitched leather on the dash and doors and a really solid feel, with no wobbly bits of trim.

Granted, poke around some areas lower down in the cabin and you'll find harder, less pleasant to touch plastics, but overall it's a nice place to sit.

Peugeot 308 SW 2024: Infotainment

One of the biggest gripes with the old Peugeot 308 was the infotainment screen, which was laggy, unresponsive and fully of confusing menus. Given Peugeot put pretty much everything including the climate functions into it, it was a real source of irritation.

Happily the system in the new 308 is much better. Every version comes with a 10-inch central touchscreen combined with a smart 10-inch digital dial display.  The touchscreen is much quicker, brighter and more responsive than before, but it gets better when you step up to Allure grades and above.

Doing so gets you something called 'i-toggle', a little second display below the main screen that acts as a shortcut panel. It's configurable, so you can pick six functions you use often (even a phone number you frequently ring) and stab the large icon rather than scrolling the sometimes over-complex menus. It works pretty well, while there's some proper physical switches underneath for key functions too.

Stepping up to Allure grade also gets you navigation and a better (but still not perfect) voice control system, as well as USB-C sockets in the front and rear. You'll want Allure Premium trim for a wireless phone charging pad and Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (they're wired on lesser versions) while GT Premium trim brings a fancy Focal sound system.

Peugeot 308 SW value for money

Value for Money Rating
The Peugeot 308 SW undercuts a Golf spec-for-spec and offers plenty of kit, while all engines will be pretty economical.

Peugeot 308 SW 2024: Prices

Opting for the 308 SW over the hatchback means you'll need to pay an extra £1200, although given most buy on finance it's an easier pill to swallow on monthly payments.

Starting at £25,825 for a 1.2 Puretech 130 Active Premium, you'll need another £1400 for the diesel. The Allure and Allure Premium models, from £27,684 and £28,585 respectively, are the best value blending kit and cost and should hold their value a bit better.

They make the GT and GT Premium trims (from £30,475 and £32,085) look a bit pricey despite the posher look they bring. But its the plug-in hybrids that require some sums. Only available on Allure Premium and above, the 180PS model adds almost £7,000 to the petrol model in the same trim, and the 225PS model is even pricier and only available in the GT trims. It's a big jump that probably won't make financial sense for many - particularly if you can't charge at home.

Peugeot 308 SW 2024: Running Costs

If outright long-distance efficiency matters most the 308 SW diesel will still be the best choice. It manages between 56.9 and 65mpg on the WLTP cycle, although as public opinion shifts away from the fuel it'll be the smallest selling engine.

The Puretech 130 petrol is still decent, particularly as it's cheaper to buy. It manages between 43.5mpg and 52.1mpg - the lower figure is probably realistic for most in mixed driving. That's actually exactly the same range as the hatchback

The plug-in hybrids will be strong sellers on the company car scene due to their low benefit-in-kind tax rates, but they'll also make sense for private buyers who can a) charge at home and b) do lots of shorter journeys. With a full charge and on journeys less than 40 miles you stand a good chance of getting near the claimed figures (up to 281mpg for the 180 and 266mpg for the 225), but on longer journeys with a depleted battery the MPG will plummet.

Model History

June 2021

Peugeot 308 SW revealed

For the first time, the new 308 SW is available with plug-in hybrid technology as well as efficient diesel and petrol engines, giving buyers the power of choice to choose the powertrain that suits their needs.

Inside, the new 308 SW comes with Peugeot's latest i-Cockpit interior and new connected infotainment system, the i-Connect® Advanced, which brings a smartphone-like user experience to the cockpit. The new 308 SW is also available with the latest semi-autonomous driver assist features and safety technologies.

Peugeot says the new 308 SW combines sharp lines with a practical design. The sloping roof, similar to the new 308, has been designed to maximise internal space for passengers and load items, while the pronounced skirt’s sleek lines give the new 308 SW an aggressive stance.

The new 308 SW measures 4.64m long – 6cm longer than the previous iteration, and has been lowered by 20mm, with a height of 1.44m. Compared to the new 308, the new 308 SW comes with a 55mm longer wheelbase, with the rear overhang 21cm longer for improved boot volume.

The new 308 SW has been designed with aerodynamic efficiency in mind and comes with a Cx coefficient of just 0.277. The aerodynamic performance is helped with the new generation of PEUGEOT wheels, which have been designed to reduce drag, and achieve a net carbon reduction of 2g/km CO 2 alone.

At the front, the new Peugeot 308 SW bears the new brand logo, featuring a roaring lions head. The logo neatly covers the radar used by the autonomous driving aids for a sleeker look.

All new 308 SW models come with Eco LED headlights as standard, and feature PEUGEOT’s now-iconic ‘fang’ daytime running lights, adding to the front profile, and making the new 308 SW instantly recognisable. GT and GT Premium models see the LED headlights upgraded to even sleeker Matrix LED lights for improved visibility and safety.

At the rear, the LED lights feature Peugeot's iconic three claw signature. Compared to the new 308, the new 308 SW does not feature a black strip that links the two taillights, with the new boot profile seeing the lights sit independently for improved load capacity.

Built on the new version of Peugeot's EMP2 (Efficient Modular Platform 2) multi-energy platform, load volume capacity in the new 308 SW is 608-litres, extending to 1,634-litres with the rear seats folded. The new 308 SW comes with a two-position boot floor, which helps improve capacity. The load area also comes with a 12V socket, with LED lighting and two storage nets and bag hooks. GT Premium models come standard with an automatically opening tailgate, which can be activated by sweeping the foot underneath the bumper or via the key fob.

To make it even more versatile, the new PEUGEOT 308 SW comes standard with a three-part rear seat configuration (40/20/40 split) and has a system to instantly fold the rear row by using two controls easily accessible from the sides of the boot. The three independently folding rear seats improve the 308 SW’s versatility, with the vehicle able to accommodate items up to 1.85m long.

The new 308 SW features PEUGEOT’s latest i-Cockpit ® interior and comes with PEUGEOT’s new i-Connect ® Advanced infotainment system that introduces a smartphone-like user interface to the 10-inch HD digital display. On GT & GT Premium models, the 10-inch HD display cluster features a 3D display. Fully configurable and customisable, this digital screen has several display modes, including those for the TomTom ® Connected 3D Navigation, media source, driving aids and energy flow.

A key development is the small steering wheel, which features sensors to detect the driver's grip levels when using driving aids. Ergonomically designed, it also includes fingertip controls for the radio, media, telephone and driving aids.

From Allure level, the new Peugeot 308 SW features fully configurable virtual i-Toggles®. Positioned alongside the central screen, they deliver both a sleeker design and enhanced ease-of-use. Each touch sensitive i-Toggle® offers a personalised shortcut key to numerous functions, including the air conditioning settings, a telephone contact, a radio station or an application launch.

The design for the passenger has also been optimised, with the centre console opening towards them. Reflecting the compact design of the new air conditioning unit, it allows more space than ever for storage and convenience and features a dedicated slot for wireless smartphone charging (from Allure Premium).

For improved smartphone connectivity, all models come standard with Apple CarPlay ® and Android Auto, with a new wireless connection from Allure Premium models.

The new 308 SW will feature the latest safety technologies and driver aids to ensure both the safety of drivers and passengers, as well as other road users. The new 308 SW will be available with the latest semi-autonomous features*, including:

  • Semi-automatic lane change - The driver suggests a lane change manoeuver by setting the direction indicators. The system performs a semi-automatic lane change manoeuver if appropriate conditions are met and confirmed by the driver
  • Anticipated speed recommendation - the system suggests to the driver that they adapt their speed (acceleration or deceleration) according to the speed limit signs
  • Curve speed adaptation - at speeds of up to 112mph (where legal) the set-up optimises the car’s speed according to the severity of the bend

The new 308 SW also adds several features often found in higher vehicle segments, including:
(available as standard or optional depending on trim level)

  • Long-range blind spot monitoring (75 metres)
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • High-definition 180° reversing camera with integrated cleaning nozzle
  • 360 HD colour camera system with four cameras (front, rear and both sides)
  • Semi-automatic parking assistance
  • PEUGEOT Open & Go
  • Heating for the windscreen and steering wheel
  • E-call+ emergency call with passenger number information and location, including the direction of the vehicle in the lane
  • Indexing the rear-view door mirrors when engaging reverse gear

Of course, new 308 SW continues to offer the same comprehensive array of equipment as its predecessor, which depending on the trim level includes:

  • Adaptive cruise control with Stop and Go function (EAT8 automatic gearbox)
  • Automatic emergency braking with collision warning and pedestrian and cyclist detection
  • Active lane keeping assistance
  • Driver attention alert
  • Automatic high beam
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Perimeter, volume and deadlocking alarm
  • Electric parking brake

GT Premium models also come standard with a premium FOCAL ® Premium Hi-Fi system, which improves sound quality in the cabin through 10 speakers. The 10-speaker set-up is made up of:

    • Four TNF aluminium inverted dome tweeters
    • Four woofers/mediums with Polyglass cone and 165mm TMD (Tuned Mass Damper) suspension
    • One Polyglass centre channel
    • One Power Flower™ triple coil ovoid subwoofer

In keeping with Peugeot's commitment to the ‘Power of Choice’, the new 308 SW is available with two plug-in hybrid powertrain options from launch:

  • HYBRID 225 e-EAT8 – a combination of an 180PS (132kW) PureTech engine and an 81kW electric motor mated to the e-EAT8 automatic gearbox. It emits as little as 26 g/km of C0₂ and up to 36 miles of 100% electric range (according to the WLTP protocol, in the process of being approved)
  • HYBRID 180 e-EAT8 – a combination of a 150PS (110kW) PureTech engine and an 81kW electric engine mated to the e-EAT8 gearbox, with emissions from 25g/km of C0₂ and up to 37 miles of 100% electric range (according to WLTP protocol, in the process of being approved)

With emissions as low as 26g/km CO 2 , the new 308 SW is ideal for both fleet and business users with a Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) rate of just 13%.

Both versions are powered by a 12.4kWh lithium-ion battery, while there are two types of on-board chargers available - a standard 3.7kW charger and an optional 7.4kW fast charger. The estimated recharging time is:

  • 1h 55m - 7.4kW Wall Box (32 A) when fitted with the optional 7.4kW on board charger and 3h 55m with the standard 3.7kW onboard charger

The new PEUGEOT 308 SW is also available with one petrol engine and one diesel engine. Complying with the latest Euro 6D regulations and currently being approved to the WLTP protocol, they emit as little as 117 g/km of CO₂. The options include:

Petrol

  • 1.2-litre PureTech 130 S&S EAT8 eight-speed automatic.

Diesel

  • 1.5-litre BlueHDi 130 S&S EAT8 eight-speed automatic

29-07-2021: Updated Peugeot 308 SW priced from £25,200

Peugeot has opened reservations for the new 308 SW, available for the first time with efficient plug-in hybrid technology alongside advanced petrol and diesel engines. With reservations now open, the new 308 SW will arrive in showrooms in early 2022.

From launch, customers have a choice between two plug-in hybrid powertrains – a HYBRID 180 e-EAT8 or the more powerful, HYBRID 225 e-EAT8, with both vehicles powered by a 12.4kWh electric battery and a 1.6-litre petrol engine. Both models are capable of up to 39 miles in electric mode under WLTP testing. With CO 2 emissions from 25g/km, the 308 SW HYBRID models are also eligible for a Benefit-in-Kind rate of just 11%, making them ideal for fleet and business users.

Both plug-in hybrid variants come standard with a 3.7kW on-board charger, with buyers able to add a faster 7.4kW as an option. A full charge with the standard 3.7kW cable takes 3 hours and 55 minutes, decreasing to 1 hour and 55 minutes when using the faster 7.4kW charger.

From launch, the new 308 SW will also be available with Peugeot’s advanced petrol and diesel engines. Buyers have a choice between a 1.2-litre PureTech 130 petrol engine and a 1.5-litre BlueHDi diesel engine. All models come standard with PEUGEOT’s smooth shifting eight-speed EAT8 automatic transmission with Stop & Start technology.

The new 308 SW adds a new level of style and practicality to the competitive compact estate segment, says the brand. The sloping roof, similar to the new 308, has been designed to maximise internal space for passengers and load items, while the pronounced skirts and sleek lines give the 308 SW an aggressive stand. The new 308 SW comes standard with Eco LED headlights, with GT and GT Premium models featuring Matrix LED lights for improved visibility and safety.

Compared to the new 308, the new 308 SW comes with a 57mm longer wheelbase and a 212mm longer rear overhang for improved space and boot volume. Load volume capacity is 608-litres, extending to 1,634 with the rear seats folded. A smart electric tailgate with foot sensor and pedestrian detection adds convenience and peace of mind and is standard on GT Premium.
