Peugeot 3008 Review 2024
Peugeot 3008 At A Glance
When the latest Peugeot 3008 arrived on the scene in 2017 it really shook up the family SUV sector. With its striking design inside and out, upmarket cabin and impressive technology it showed that cars such as these could be both stylish and practical. It also made the previous Nissan Qashqai look decidedly old-hat.
Since then there's been a number of newer competitors arrive such as the latest Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage and Ford Kuga, which have upped the ante in those departments. Peugeot has reacted by freshening up the 3008 with a revised exterior look and some even better tech.
The striking frameless grille certainly makes a statement, but from the rear you'd be hard pushed to spot any changes over the pre-facelift car. Still, design was never a weak point on this car. It still cuts a dash in the supermarket car park, that's for sure - even the Vauxhall's closely related (and also recently refreshed) Grandland doesn't compare in the style stakes.
The interior hasn't changed a great deal either, which again is no bad thing as it's still a competitive SUV in terms of the smart design and high quality feel. But you do get fresh materials and trims and a new, larger infotainment system. The Peugeot 3008's unusual 'iCockpit' driving position remains, however, and although it works much better here than in some of Peugeot's smaller models drivers of certain shapes and sizes might not get on with it.
The 3008 is still a pretty practical car, but there are roomier alternatives out there now. Sure, it'll be big enough for most families and the 520-litre boot is a good size, but rear space isn't the most generous and speccing the panoramic sunroof eats into headroom.
The diesel version used to be our favourite engine in the Peugeot 3008, and the latest 1.5 BlueHDI unit remain both punchy and frugal. But these days the pick of the range has to be the entry-level 1.2 Puretech petrol, which really punches above its weight.
Plug-in petrol hybrid models with two-wheel or four-wheel drive were added to the range in early-2020, giving the 3008 an advertised 217mpg and a pure-electric range of 36 miles. They offer punchy performance, too, but the four-wheel drive version in particular is rather expensive.
On the road the 3008 impresses with its quiet cabin, neat handling and good ride quality. There’s plenty of traction despite the lack of an all-wheel drive version and body roll is well-controlled through corners. It’s also available with useful convenience features like adaptive cruise control that stops and starts in traffic jams.
Peugeot has foregone the basic Access specification for the 3008, instead offering all cars with a generous level of standard equipment including a fully-digital instrument binnacle, a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a reversing camera. Autonomous emergency braking and lane departure warning are standard too.
Prices are slightly higher than some rivals (including the related Grandland and Citroen C5 Aircross), but the extra money buys extra equipment and a more premium ambience. The good level of equipment and stylish cabin make the 3008 stand out, plus strong driving dynamics and refinement.
We lived with a 3008 for six months - find out how we got on with it in our Peugeot 3008 long term test. Looking for a second opinion? Why not read heycar's Peugeot 3008 review.

Peugeot 3008 2024: Handling and ride quality
The 3008's compact steering wheel and fast rack heightens the sense of agility, making it good to drive around town and on the open road.
It's not brimming with feedback, though, and sometimes the speed of the steering makes it less easy to place in a bend. Overall a SEAT Ateca or Mazda CX-5 are more satisfying cars to drive on twisty roads.
Having said that, the 3008 strikes a decent enough balance between confident, assured handling and a generally comfortable ride. It's not class-leading in the latter respect, though - generally it's smooth enough, particularly once up to speed, but it can get caught out by big, sharp bumps and thump around a bit. Opting for smaller wheels will help here, though.
The plug-in hybrids feel a little less eager to change direction on account of their heftier kerbweight.
Peugeot 3008 2024: Engines
For most drivers doing average annual mileage, we'd recommend the entry-level 1.2-litre Puretech 130 petrol engine. It might sound a bit weak for powering a family SUV, but it punches well above its weight thanks to 230Nm of torque and a relatively low kerbweight. It's pretty refined for a three-cylinder, too, emitting a not-unpleasant growl when you push it.
There's also the 1.5-litre BlueHDI diesel, which has the same 131PS output as the petrol but a healthier 300Nm of torque. It's also 100kg heavier than the petrol, though, so doesn't feel all that quicker and actually has a 0-62mph time that's over a second longer than the Puretech. It's the one we'd recommend for long distances, though, on account of its excellent real-world economy.
Both engines can be paired with either a six-speed manual gearbox or eight-speed automatic. The manual's shifts are a bit rubbery and unsatisfying, but then the automatic can be a bit hesitant and refuse to hold onto higher gears and use the torque available. It's fine for the most part, though.
Peugeot 3008 2024: Safety
Euro NCAP tested the Peugeot 3008 in 2016 and awarded it the full five star rating, with strong scores across the board for occupant protection. That test is now stricter, but mainly on the safety assist score, and now all 3008s get the safety pack with lane keep assist and automatic emergency braking as standard.
Peugeot 3008 2024: Towing
If you want to tow in your Peugeot 3008, the best option would've been the old 2.0-litre diesel which has an unbraked capacity of 1700kg. That's no longer available, so your next best bet is the 1.5-litre diesel manual which has a 1500kg capacity. For some reason the automatic sees that drop to 1300kg.
Neither the petrols nor the plug-in hybrids are particularly good tow cars. The pure petrol manages 1400kg, while the PHEVs are just 1250kg regardless of whether you go for front or four-wheel drive.

Peugeot 3008 2024: Practicality
Peugeot has stuck with its small, low mounted steering wheel with high mounted instruments for the 3008 (dubbed iCockpit). Unlike older efforts where many drivers would find their most comfortable position meant the wheel obscuring the dials, the latest version is much more accommodating, although taller drivers will still want to try before buying.
Space in the Peugeot 3008 is good overall, with plenty of space up front, a decent amount of space for two adults in the back and a pretty large boot. That said, opting for the panoramic sunroof eats substantially into head room, so for taller people it’s best avoided.
What's more, while the rear seat accommodation is far from cramped, newer rivals such as the Skoda Karoq and Kia Sportage are more generous for both head and leg space, plus are a little wider to allow for a third occupant.
The boot is 520 litres and, if the false floor is at its highest, the deck is nice and flat. It is high, like in all SUV, so lifting heavy items in can be tricky, but overall it's a useful load space - if, again, no longer the largest in the class.
If the headrests are down, the middle row of seats flops forward at the pull of a lever, expanding boot capacity to 1670 litres, which is plenty for flat pack furniture or trips to a garden centre. Under the boot floor is a space-saver spare wheel, standard across all variants, along with some hidey holes to keep valuables hidden from prying eyes.
The glovebox is, in typical French car style, only half useful in UK cars, because the fusebox occupies much of the space inside. However there is a large central storage bin between the seats with masses of room, enough for drinks bottles or an iPad (other generic tablets are available). There is also an optional wireless charging pad (standard on higher trims) that is big enough even for huge ‘phablets’ like the Samsung Galaxy Note.
In terms of exterior dimension, the Peugeot 3008 is 4447mm long, 1826mm wide and 1624mm tall. That makes it a little shorter than the Kia Sportage and quite a bit shorter than the latest Ford Puma.
Peugeot 3008 2024: Quality and finish
The interior is the best part of the 3008. The centre console is laid out in a modern and stylish way, while the material quality is largely impressive even in comparison with newer rivals.
There's a nice mix of materials, metal-like switchgear and soft-touch trim, while neat touches such as ambient lighting do make it seem (at first glance) like a car from the class above. However, start poking and prodding in areas lower down the cabin and there are some cheaper elements to remind you that this is a mainstream product.
Peugeot 3008 2024: Infotainment
Prior to the Peugeot 3008's 2021 facelift all models had an eight-inch touchscreen combined with digital dials offering some (but not loads) of configuration.
After the facelift, that eight-inch screen is reserved for the lower-end trims, with Allure models and above getting a larger and crisper 10-inch display. The system works reasonably well, responding to touch inputs decently enough and with separate 'piano key' shortcuts to make switching between menus a little quicker.
We'd still like a 'proper' physical switchgear bank for the climate control, however - Vauxhall offers this in the Grandland, but Peugeot has decided to rely more heavily on the touchscreen, meaning it can be a little more fiddly to adjust things on the move.
Peugeot 3008 value for money
Peugeot 3008 2024: Prices
The entry-level Peugeot 3008 Active Premium starts from £29,325 as of 2022, which makes it a chunk more expensive than its siblings from Vauxhall and Citroen, plus rivals such as the Nissan Qashqai, Skoda Karoq and Kia Sportage.
It's on a par with the Volkswagen Tiguan, however, and at least the 3008 has the standard kit tally to go some way to justify its price. We'd only step up one rung from base model to Allure Premium to get features such as the bigger touchscreen, folding front passenger seat, roof rails and nicer cabin trim.
Happily, the entry-level petrol engine is also our pick of the range. The hybrids, meanwhile, command a pretty hefty list price premium for private buyers, although it's more manageable in a finance deal. They're really best suited to company car drivers, however, thanks to their low Benefit-in-Kind tax rates.
Peugeot 3008 2024: Running Costs
Even the pure petrol engine offers low running costs, officially managing up to 48mpg combined on the WLTP cycle. We'd expect mid-fourties in mixed driving, which is good for a car of this size.
The diesel is of course the real-world fuel economy champion, promising up to 60mpg - although this needs to be offset with the higher purchase price and cost at the pumps.
The plug-in hybrids, meanwhile, can be incredibly cheap to run for private buyers - but only in certain circumstances. both offer good official electric ranges (39 for the two-wheel drive model, 40 for the Hybrid4), which should cover a good chunk of most people's commutes. Use them for longer journeys with a depleted battery, however, and they'll be the least efficient offerings in the 3008 lineup.
Insurance costs are generally pretty low, meanwhile, and strong efficiency means tax rates aren't sky high. Top-spec versions will cross over the £40,000 list price threshold for the 'premium car' tax, however, which adds a hefty VED premium for five years.

New Peugeot 3008 revealed
With a longer wheelbase and an overall length which is just 80mm longer than the current model, interior space has improved, most notably for rear occupants who now have an additional 24mm legroom, 4mm elbow room and 36mm headroom. Front elbow space has also increased by 17mm despite the width of the new model being identical to the outgoing version at 1840mm, and height being 19mm lower at 1620mm.
Luggage space has also improved in the new 3008. With a luggage capacity of 520L (under the luggage cover), this is almost 90L bigger than the previous generation. Like the previous version, owners can remove the luggage cover and fold the second row of seats flat; this results in a total luggage capacity of 1580 litres, one of the largest and most versatile load capacities in the segment.
Despite the improvements in passenger and luggage capacities, the new model is, on average, 100kg lighter than the previous generation versions. This has been achieved though intelligent design and use of materials to provide improved efficiency, better fuel economy, increased performance, a more dynamic driving experience and class leading safety.
The adaptable moving boot floor, initiated on the original 3008, has been evolved with two positions to allow the optimisation of boot space and removable side-panels that can be affixed to the side boot trim. For the carrying of long objects, the front passenger seat can be folded to allow a smaller width item of 3 metres to be carried (like skis) on all versions. This clever functionality can be further completed with a hands-free opening tailgate, allowing a simple gesture of the foot under the rear bumper to open or to close the motorised tailgate.
Available on the new 3008 is Active Safety Brake and Distance Alert, a distance alert function (risk of collision warning) with automatic emergency braking (to avoid a collision or to limit the severity by reducing vehicle speed) and Active Involuntary Crossing Line, a lane departure alert for safer driving with visual and audible warnings and active vehicle control.
The new model also has the Driver Alert Warning function; with constant analysis of vehicle trajectory against road markings, it can then trigger several levels of audible and visual alerts and remind drivers to take a break after two hours of continuous driving and at a speed greater than 65km/h (40mph).
The new 3008 comes with a range of fuel efficient petrol and diesel engines.
Four petrol models are available, including the 1.2-litre PureTech 130 Stop&Start (S&S) with CO2 emission of just 115g/km:
- 1.2L PureTech 130 S&S 6-speed manual (6SMT)
- 1.2L PureTech 130 S&S 6-speed manual (6SMT) optimised low fuel consumption models
- 1.2L PureTech 130 S&S 6-speed Automatic (EAT6)
- 1.6L THP 165 S&S 6-speed Automatic (EAT6)
There is also have a choice of five diesel engine options, with BlueHDi technology capable of reducing emissions to just 100g/km:
- 1.6L BlueHDi 100 S&S 5-speed Manual (BVM5)
- 1.6L BlueHDi 120 S&S 6-speed Manual (BVM6 - for normal and low consumption versions)
- 1.6L BlueHDi 120 S&S 6-speed Automatic (EAT6)

Peugeot 3008 plug-in hybrid announced
The Peugeot 3008 GT Hybrid4 combines four-wheel drive and 300PS with ultra-low emissions of just 29g/km, according to official WLTP testing.
The new plug-in hybrid is powered by a combination of a 147kW (200PS) 1.6-litre PureTech petrol engine and two electric motors, creating a combined power output of 220kW (300PS), and will accelerate from 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds. The 13.2kWh battery provides up to 36 miles of 100% electric, or zero emission range, with a full charge taking less than two hours using a 7kW chargepoint.
The 3008 SUV GT Hybrid4 is the first 3008 SUV available with four-wheel drive, while the ultra-low 29g/km CO2 emissions means the vehicle classifies in the lowest Benefit-in-Kind rate for business and fleet users. The all-new plug-in hybrid attracts a BIK rating of 10% from April 2020.
The 3008 GT Hybrid4 will be joined by a 165kW (225PS) front-wheel drive model. The front-wheel drive PHEV will combine a 132kW (180PS) PureTech petrol unit, with an 80kW (110PS) electric motor, located on the front axle, that is controlled via an EAT8 8-speed automatic gearbox.
The 3008 SUV GT Hybrid4 features Nappa Mistral full grain leather interior trim. The PHEV also utilises the newest safety technology, shared with the all-new 508 Fastback and SW, with adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go function and Lane Positioning Assist.

Peugeot 3008 range updated with new trim levels
Peugeot has updated the 3008 with new trim levels, styling changes and interior upgrades with no change in pricing for customers relating to these enhancements. Also available is a wider choice of powertrains across both models, with Plug-in Hybrid technology now available across the entire 3008 trim range. Orders for the updated 3008 range are now open.
From August, Active Premium + and Allure Premium + replace previous Active Premium and Allure Premium trim levels, with Allure trim no longer available. The Peugeot 3008 will now be available in Active Premium +, Allure Premium +, GT and GT Premium specification.
Active Premium + models receive several upgrades over previous Active Premium trim levels, including the addition of an ‘Aluminium Pack’ with Aluminium Front Door Sills and Pedals, 18-inch ‘DETROIT’ Storm Grey Diamond-Cut Alloy Wheels and Aluminium Roof Rails. Also added is a dark tinted rear window and rear side windows.
Allure Premium + models also receive the ‘Aluminium Pack’ with the roof upgraded to a contrasting ‘Black Diamond’ finish for added styling.
To satisfy growing customer demand for the HYBRID 225 e-EAT8 powertrain, the 3008 HYBRID range is expanded to include the new Active Premium + trim, resulting in a lower entry price point for HYBRID customers.
3008 HYBRID Active Premium + versions will include additional elements over petrol and diesel 3008 variants, including:
10-inch Touchscreen with Connected Navigation & Voice Recognition
Half Mistral Leather Effect Trim with ‘Colyn’ and ‘Mint Green’ stitching
Driver’s seat manual lumbar support adjustment
Frameless Rear View Mirror
Advanced Emergency Braking System with video and radar assistance
Active Premium + models also receive the EAT8 8-speed automatic transmission across both 1.2L PureTech 130 and 1.5L BlueHDi powertrains, with the 3008 now sold exclusively with Peugeot’s smooth shifting automatic transmission. This follows growing customer demand for automatic transmissions over manual gearboxes, with the majority of 3008 customers in 2022 opting for automatic versions.
What to watch out for
Report that production of the Peugeot 3008 1.2 Puretech 130 GT Line with EAT6 automatic transmission has been stopped. Peugeot explained: "Due to the customer orders of the All-New 3008 SUV surpassing our expectations, we have prioritised production of the PureTech 130 EAT6 for the Allure trim level, the most popular trim level for this engine/gearbox combination. For the GT Line trim level, the PureTech 130 EAT6 is temporarily unavailable. However customers can benefit from the THP 165 EAT6, which offers more performance to go hand in hand with the enhanced sports styling."
