Peugeot 208 Review 2024

Peugeot 208 At A Glance

4/5
Honest John Overall Rating
The Peugeot 208 is a style-focused small car with a premium interior, lots of standard kit and a comfortable ride. it's also available with fully electric power, too. It's not the most spacious or the cheapest small car, however.

+Stylish and upmarket design inside and out. Good comfort and refinement. One of two small cars still available with petrol, diesel and electric power.

-The closely related Vauxhall Corsa is more affordable. The electric e-208 is substantially more expensive. Rear space is tight for larger adults, and the driving position isn't for everyone.

New prices start from £20,135
On average it achieves 0% of the official MPG figure

The latest Peugeot 208 has upped the game in the desirability stakes by quite a bit, showing small cars don't have to be dull and feel built down to a cost. There's a few compromises to be made in the name of design, but as our Peugeot 208 review shows we reckon it's well worth considering among the best in this class.

Remember when small Peugeots had a touch of style about them? The 205 still looks pretty sharp today, but later cars (in particular the lacklustre 207) lost that joie de vivre that helped them stand out from the usual small car tedium.

We're happy to report that the latest generation Peugeot 208 marks a return to form on that front, with that striking design and interior that's more club class than cut price. But the beauty is more than skin deep, as the 208 is the first Peugeot to be offered with three power sources: petrol, diesel and fully electric - the latter badged the Peugeot e-208.

There's another small car that offers that trio of motor choices: the latest Vauxhall Corsa. That's because both are very closely related under the skin, with the Vauxhall offering a more conventional design but a more affordable price. The Peugeot, on the other hand, competes with the Volkswagen Polo, Toyota Yaris and Renault Clio as a slightly higher class offering.

The Peugeot's interior might be well-equipped and (in higher spec trims particularly) very appealing, but there's some negatives. Firstly it isn't the roomiest small car money can buy in the back, and secondly the unusual iCockpit cabin design (more on that in a bit) won't suit all shapes and sizes.

Most people will buy the petrol Peugeot 208, which uses a 1.2-litre Puretech turbo petrol engine in a couple of outputs. There's a frugal 1.5-litre diesel for motorway hacks, while the Peugeot e-208 has a punchy electric motor and a range of up to 217 miles. To drive the 208 majors on comfort and refinement over outright fun whichever version you go for.

Overall there's a lot to like, and if you're willing to pay a little more over the Corsa for something that stands out in the supermarket car park it's a good - if not perfect - buy.

Peugeot 208 handling and engines

Driving Rating
The Peugeot 208 isn't the most exciting small car to drive, but it is one of the most comfortable and refined. The Puretech turbo petrol engines are excellent, too.

Peugeot 208 2024: Handling and ride quality

Safe, secure and grippy, the Peugeot 208 gets the basics right on the handling front. The small diameter steering wheel also enhances the feeling of agility, making it a doddle the thread through town.

What it doesn't offer is a lot of fun, certainly when compared to the Ford Fiesta. There's a fair amount of body roll (particularly in the heavier e-208), and although the steering is light and easy around town and weights up enough at speed, it's not the most confidence-inspiring.

Where it makes up for this is ride comfort, which is just about as good as it gets in a small car. It even beats the Audi A1 for bump isolation, with a really supple and smooth ride. It does bob around a bit on country lanes as a result, but being able to take the edge of sharp potholes is worth that.

Peugeot 208 2024: Engines

The Peugeot 208's engine range kicks off with the petrol Puretech 75. It's a non-turbocharged three-cylinder engine with 75PS and a fairly pitiful 118Nm of torque. Mated to a five-speed manual gearbox 0-62mph takes a yawning 14.9 seconds, so it's best reserved for new drivers.

Things get much perkier with the Puretech 100, which allies the three-cylinder engine to a turbocharger. With 100PS and 205Nm it'll get to 62mph from rest in just 9.9 seconds, and it feels nicely punchy in the mid-range so you don't need to rev the nuts off it. It's fairly refined, too, and cruises better thanks to a six-speed manual gearbox or optional eight-speed automatic.

The top Puretech 130 petrol engine is only available with the eight-speed EAT8 automatic gearbox, which shifts fairly smoothly and works well with it. With 130PS and 230Nm it's warm hatch quick, with a 0-62mph time of 8.7 seconds.

The 208 BlueHDI 100 is the only diesel offering, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. With 100PS and a meaty 250Nm of torque it doesn't feel sluggish, but its power delivery and diesel grumble doesn't really suit a small car. It's very efficient, however.

The electric Peugeot e-208 gets a 136PS electric motor and instant torque delivery. With no gears it's quick up to 62mph, taking 8.1 seconds, but power tails off above that and its limited to 93mph. It's certainly zippy enough for most needs, however. It's mated to a 50kWh battery with a quoted range of up to 217 miles, although that'll fall in cold weather and if you do a lot of high speed driving with little regenerative braking.

Peugeot 208 2024: Safety

The Peugeot 208 received a decent but not class-leading four stars out of five in Euro NCAP crash tests. The main marks were deducted for pedestrian protection rather than occupant protection.

Standard safety kit includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane assist, a driver attention alert. GT models add cyclist detection to the emergency braking, while the optional Driver Assist Pack adds adaptive cruise control. Lane positioning assist is also available.

Peugeot 208 2024: Towing

It's unlikely you'll be towing much with a small car, but the Peugeot 208's towing capacity varies between 500-1200kg depending on version.

Peugeot 208 2024: Practicality

The Peugeot 208 is not the roomiest small car around, but it's not hopelessly cramped either. There's enough space up front for tall drivers but headroom isn't overly generous.

There is one sizeable problem for tall drivers (a category which this tester fits in) and its Peugeot's 'iCockpit' driving position. As you get in everything from the bigger 308 to the much bigger 5008 there's a compact steering wheel that's mounted low down below the dials. This means you look over the wheel rather than through it as in other cars.

The theory is fine, but in practice tall drivers will struggle for knee and leg space under the wheel as the pedal box is quite close. Having to splay your knees either side of the wheel, you also might find the top edge of the wheel blocks the lower area of the dials unless you adjust it too low for comfort. It's not a problem with smaller drivers, but those 6ft 3 and over should try before they buy. It's more noticeable in the 208 than Peugeot's larger cars.

Because the pedals are so close taller drivers need the seat pushed back more than other small cars. That eats into legroom, which is fine for adults under six foot but tight for anyone taller. The same applies to headroom, particularly if you have the panoramic sunroof fitted.

Storage is decent, though, with some decent sized door bins front and rear, a large centre cubby under the centre armrest and some cupholders and trays.

The Peugeot 208's boot space is 311 litres, which is competitive but some way off the VW Polo and Skoda Fabia. It's a decent space, but the boot opening isn't huge and there's no height adjustable boot floor. The seats fold in the usual 60/40 split to increase the space.

In terms of exterior dimensions the Peugeot 208 is 4,055mm long, 1,745mm wide and 1,430mm tall.

Peugeot 208 2024: Quality and finish

This is where the Peugeot 208 excels: its cabin is a generally very high quality environment that betters the majority of the class in terms of plush finishes. This is particularly the case in GT and GT Premium trim, which add niceties such as multi-colour ambient lighting and Alcantara seat trim.

The design is upmarket, too, with plenty of detailing you usually see on more expensive cars. Actual fit and finish isn't far behind the VW Polo - certainly nothing feels flimsy or cheap. Only some scratchy plastics low-down let the side down, but it's to be expected of a small car.

Peugeot 208 2024: Infotainment

Every Peugeot 208 gets a touchscreen mounted on top of the dash within the driver's line of sight. On entry-level models it's a 7.0-inch display that comes with DAB, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Stepping up to Allure Premium+ and above brings the larger 10-inch widescreen display. This also has built-in sat-nav, while a neat digital dial display is also added on this trim. This has a 3D effect, which is unique in the class, while the dials are pretty customisable and clear.

The touchscreen is decent enough but not the most intuitive or responsive display around. There's too many fiddly menus and tricky non-physical buttons, although there is at least some hard key switches to easily switch between key menus.

Allure trim also features wireless smartphone charging, but you also get USB and USB-C connections on all trims. The sound system is a six-speaker setup that's pretty good quality.

Peugeot 208 value for money

Value for Money Rating
The Peugeot 208 is among the pricier superminis in the class, but partly makes up for that with its design and equipment. Running costs aren't bad either.

Peugeot 208 2024: Prices

In 2022 you'll need £19,190 to get into the Peugeot 208 Active Premium+, and that's with a rather underpowered 75PS petrol engine. That's around £1,700 more than the equivalent Vauxhall Corsa, too.

It's well worth the extra £1,100 to get into the turbocharged Puretech 100 engine, while another £1,430 gets you the Puretech 130 with the automatic gearbox.

The diesel is manual-only and starts from £21,880. You'll need much deeper pockets for the Peugeot e-208, which starts from (gulp) £30,195, but the cheapest two trim levels do qualify for a £1,500 government grant discount.

Want more kit? The cheapest 308 Allure Premium+ is £21,590, with the GT model commanding another £1,950. A further £900 gets you in GT Premium trim.

On the used market the cheapest, entry-level Peugeot 208 from 2020 starts at £13,495.

Peugeot 208 2024: Running Costs

The electric Peugeot e-208 helps offset its (rather large) list price jump with rock-bottom running costs. You won't pay anything in road tax (VED) being an electric car, while your 'fuel economy' depends on how cheap your electricity tariff is. Rapid charging will be much pricier, though, so bear that in mind if you can't charge at home.

As for the petrol 208, the official combined figured say you'll get between 48.2 and 55.6mpg in the Puretech 75, although the figures for the much punchier Puretech 100 are actually slightly better because you don't need to work the turbo engine as hard. The auto Puretech 130 drops down to 44-50mpg, however.

The diesel manages an impressive 63-73mpg, so although it's not a huge seller it's worth tracking one down if you do big miles.

Insurance groups range from group 12 for the cheapest model right up to group 25 for the most expensive. The e-208 sits in group 26-28.

Peugeot 208 models and specs

There used to be a basic entry-level Peugeot 208 Active available to buy new, but it's been dropped due to lack of popularity. As of 2022 the 208 range is as follows:

The cheapest Peugeot 208 Active Premium+ features equipment such as 16-inch alloy wheels, climate control, power-folding mirrors, auto lights and wipers, a leather-trimmed steering wheel and a seven-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Stepping up to the Peugeot 208 Allure Premium+ brings kit such as an upgraded infotainment screen with sat-nav, the iCockpit 3D digital instruments, a reversing camera and aluminium pedals and sill covers.

The higher-spec Peugeot 208 GT upgrades the alloy wheel size while adding full LED headlights with Smartbeam assist, front parking sensors, blind spot monitoring and eight-colour interior ambient lighting, plus a height adjustable front passenger seat.

Finally the top-spec Peugeot 208 GT Premium changes the alloy wheels to black, plus adds keyless entry and start, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane positioning assist (with the automatic gearbox) and upgraded Alcantara and cloth seat trim.

Model History

March 2019

Peugeot 208 revealed at 2019 Geneva Motor Show

The new Peugeot 208 to start at around £16,000 when it arrives in summer 2019. It'll be available with petrol and diesel engines, as well as an electric version badged the e-208 with a range of up to 211 miles.

The interior of the 208 is inspired by the tech laden 508, with an abundance of soft-touch materials and a compact steering wheel that's complemented by a minimalist dashboard design. The 3D digital instrument panel can be projected like a hologram via the colour touchscreen.

There's also a seven- or 10-inch touchscreen display, depending on trim level, which provides Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Peugeot is offering a host of driver assistance technology including adaptive cruise control, active lane keeping assist and automatic headlight dipping.

Prices, CO2 and fuel economy ratings for the 208 are yet to be confirmed. The entry-level 1.2 petrol is expected to start in the region of £16,000, while the all-electric e-208 will exceed £20,000.

Peugeot 208 range streamlined for 2022

GT Premium variants are now sold exclusively with 1.2-litre PureTech petrol engines. Customers have a choice of two efficient PureTech petrol engines: the PureTech 100 is now available exclusively with a 6-speed manual gearbox in GT Premium trim, with an 8-speed Efficient Automatic Transmission available on the more powerful PureTech 130 engine.

Outside, ‘Diamond Black’ door mirror covers are introduced on Active Premium and Allure Premium for a more distinctive sportier look. Active Premium and Allure Premium versions benefit from the fitment of 16” Class A+ tyres, producing a lower rolling resistance and leading to improved efficiency.

Active Premium models feature 16-inch ‘Taksim’ or ‘Elborn’ alloy wheels as standard (depending on powertrain). All 208 and e-208 Active Premium variants come standard with PEUGEOT’s i-Cockpit® interior with a compact steering wheel, a 3.5-inch instrument panel and 7-inch capacitive colour touchscreen. All models also come standard with Mirror Screen®, Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto.

Inside, the seats are trimmed in tri-material ‘Pneuma’ and ‘Rimini’ cloth with orange double stitch detail for added ambiance. For enhanced safety, all models come as standard with PEUGEOT Connect SOS and Assistance, Lane Keeping Assist, Speed Limit Recognition and Recommendation and Driver Attention Warning. This forms part of the brand’s innovative i-Cockpit®, which also consists of a compact multi-function steering wheel and configurable 3D head-up digital instrument panel.

The Peugeot 208 range is available with petrol, diesel or fully electric powertrains, giving customers the ‘Power of Choice’ to find the option best suited to their needs. Supporting up to 100kW rapid charging, a 0-80% charge can be completed in just 30 minutes.

The Peugeot 208 and e-208 can be purchased in-store from Peugeot Retailers and via Peugeot’s Buy Online platform. Buy Online allows customers to configure, finance, and order their next vehicle entirely from the comfort of their home, as well as obtain a part-exchange valuation on their current vehicle.
