Peugeot 107 (2005 – 2014) Review
Peugeot 107 (2005 – 2014) At A Glance
As small city cars go, the 107 has almost the perfect dimensions. It's designed to be easy to drive and manoeuvre into tight spots and thanks to the wheel in each corner design the it's ideal. That clever design means it's also neatly proportioned. The flat rear and raked windscreen give it a sporty feel and it certainly has a more distinctive and youthful appeal than many small cars. It's no surprise this is such a popular car for younger drivers who have just passed their test.
The 107 is in fact the sister car to the Toyota Aygo and Citroen C1 which isn't exactly hard to spot. They're all built at the same factory and the good news is that it was largely designed by Toyota so it's well built, durable and reliable - traits that aren't always a Peugeot strength. On the road it feels more substantial than you'd imagine given its fairly dimunitive size and is actually very good to drive with a precise gear shift and a peppy 1.0-litre engine with 68bhp.
It's no performance car but it is very cheap to run. That little three-cylinder engine is ideal in town as it pulls well from low revs, yet it will still average 62.7mpg and CO2 emissions of 106g/km means it's in the cheapest car tax band that isn't zero. It's even available with a semi-automatic gearbox called 2-Tronic which is pretty rare on a car this small while insurance is group 3 (in the new 1 to 50 group ratings) which was group 1 in the old system.
With low prices, both new and used, the 107 is a good value choice too, but that doesn't mean you get a cheap interior. It's well built and stylish inside with a good quality finish and a neat layout. Passenger space is decent too, considering the little Peugeot is less than 3.5 metres long and even taller drivers won't feel cramped. As city cars go, the 107 is pretty much the perfect package.

Peugeot 107 (2005 – 2014) handling and engines
- Engines range from 1.0 to 1.0 2-Tronic
- Readers report Real MPG to be between 40–66 mpg
A wide track helps the 107s handling. Despite its tiny 14-inch wheels and thin tyres, grip levels are good and there's plenty of bite under braking. As you'd expect there is some body roll but the speed sensitive steering impresses providing good feel when cruising and decent feedback. Those small overhangs and great all round visibility make nipping in and out of traffic simple, while the almost vertical rear means that reverse parking is trouble free.
The dimunitive 107 is also very light, weighing in at just 825kg the tiny hatch is certainly trim. That low figure is helped by the super light 998cc engine, which tips the scales at just 67kg. It produces 68bhp and with its characterful exhaust note and three-cylinder thrum it's great fun to use, delivering sprightly performance. Good throttle response and a positive five-speed gearbox help so the 107 doesn't feel out of its depth on open roads - in fact it's a revelation and great fun if not especially fast. The official 0-62mph time is 14.2 seconds with the manual gearbox (it's 14.9 seconds with the 2-Tronic gearbox) which doesn't look that impressive, but the little engine is happy to be revved, although it can get noisy.
It's not an ideal car for the motorway, due mainly to its lack of torque and quite high revs, but it cruises happily at 70mph and will keep up with traffic with few problems. Despite its weight and size it feels stable too - helped by its relatively wide track. This helps the handling and with go-kart like reactions and responsive steering it feels nimble and sure-footed through bends. The ride quality could be improved but it deals with rough urban roads better than its rival and doesn't crash over potholes. Elsewhere, it's easy to drive thanks to a light clutch and gearshift while the vibration you usually get from three-cylinder engines is well insulated.
The electronically controlled 2-Tronic five-speed manual gearbox is quite an innovative system. There is no clutch pedal and two gear selection modes are available - "E" or Easy - where the selection of the required gears is totally automatic or a more active mode with "clutch-less" gear changes made manually by the driver. The Easy mode means the driver doesn't need to manually select gears and is suitable for city driving, like a conventional automatic. There's a creep function, so the car will move smoothly away as soon as the brake pedal is released. In manual mode you just pull the gear lever back for up shifts, and push forward for downshifts.

With no shiny cheap plastics on show and a neat dash material the Peugeot cabin feels well finished. Importantly the materials look and feel pleasant and are of a far better quality than you'll find on other budget cars of this size. With unusual heater controls, a user-friendly stereo and a funky pod-style speedometer the design is fresh and attractive while the translucent section stylishly glows orange at night. There are some exposed bolts on the doors, but luckily they're hidden away and don't spoil the cabin too much.
Despite an overall length of less than 3.5 metres there's good space in the front too, although knee room can feel a little restricted, especially since there's no height adjustment on the seats. The chairs themselves are quite narrow and flat but they are surprisingly comfortable, even on longer journeys. Rear passenger space is adequate but taller people will find legroom is a squeeze and stowage is compromised by the fact the speakers take up most of the space on the door pockets. But given this is a city car, its exactly what you'd expect.
The boot could be better though - and it's not just its small size. To save money the tailgate is simply a piece of glass and this leaves you with a high load sill while the capacity is just 139 litres. However at least it has 50/50 split folding-rear seats, which boost capacity to 751 litres overall and means you can fit in a bike. It's easy to see where else money has been saved on the Peugeot. There's exposed metal on the doors, although the firm will no doubt point to this as a styling element, no glovebox and the rev counter is an option. Plus the fuel filler flap uses a cheap metal clip to close and there's no lock either.
Equipment from launch (June 2005):
Urban was initially the only trim available and comes with electric power steering, driver and passenger airbags, a CD radio with an MP3 socket, ABS with EBFD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution) and CSC (Cornering Stability Control), remote central door locking, electric windows, 50/50 split folding rear seats with Isofix mountings, body-coloured door mirrors and door handles, side-rubbing strips and a rigid removable rear parcel self.
Urban Lite is below the Urban in the range and was launched in November 2006 as an entry-level model. It has electric power steering, driver and passenger airbags, the CD stereo with MP3 socket, ABS with EBFD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution) and CSC (Cornering Stability Control) and is available in Laser Red, Citrus Yellow or Raven Black.
Sport XS was added in January 2007 and is distinguished by coloured (depending on the body colour) stripes, alloy wheels and red trim in the interior. The actual equipment levels are identical to the Urban.
Verve is the top model and comes with air conditioning, 14-inch alloy wheels, a rev counter and exclusive availability of the new Mandalin Orange paintwork.

June 2005
Peugeot 107 launched in the UK
Comes with just one trim level and a single 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine. The 107 Urban comes equipped with a 1.0 litre, 3 cylinder petrol engine and a 5 speed manual gearbox. A 2-tronic, controlled manual gearbox is available as an option. The list of standard equipment - both in terms of safety and comfort - is highly competitive in this sector and its insurance group rating is 1E.
Active safety features include anti-lock braking (ABS), electronic brake force distribution (EBFD) and cornering stability control (CSC). The 107 is fitted with SMART driver and passenger airbags and front side airbags as standard. Security includes a Thatcham approved transponder immobiliser, a locking fuel filler cap and an internally operated central locking button.
Comfort and convenience for the 107 driver have been assured with the inclusion of speed related electric power steering, remote control central locking, electric front windows, tinted glass, height adjustable steering wheel, 5 speed heater fan and an integrated radio/CD player with input socket for an MP3 player. A range of cost options is also available to tailor the specification of the car to the owner's requirements; these include, metallic paint, air conditioning with recirculation and pollen filter and alloy wheels.
October 2006
Peugeot introduced new 107 entry-model called Urban Lite which uses the 68bhp 3-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol engine, capable of 100mph and 61.4mpg. Standard features include electric power steering, driver and passenger airbags, CD stereo with MP3 socket, ABS with EBFD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution) and CSC (Cornering Stability Control). 'Urban Lite' models are available in Laser Red, Citrus Yellow or Raven Black.
The more highly-specified current 107 'Urban' model also features remote central door locking, electric windows, 50/50 split folding rear seats with Isofix mountings, body-coloured door mirrors and door handles, side-rubbing strips and rigid removable luggage cover. A 2-Tronic 'auto' Urban model is also available.
June 2007
A special edition 107 Urban Move was introduced with extra features over the Urban model such as air conditioning, metallic paint (a choice of Raven Black or Zircon Grey), a rev counter, unique matrix red seat trim, bright silver surrounds to speedometer and air vents and a bright silver finish to interior door pulls.
June 2008
Peugeot launched another special edition - the 107 KISS which has an enhanced specification, KISS livery and is available in either Laser Red or Raven Black metallic. Exclusive to this Special Edition are KISS labelled floor mats, central door locking, electric windows, an upgraded Clarion stereo radio and CD player with removable front panel plus upgraded speakers and a subwoofer with additional volume control. In addition, the unit features a USB socket to enable an iPod or any MP3 player to be connected - the iPod display is transferred to the radio screen.
January 2009
Improved 107 arrives
The revised Peugeot 107 arrived at UK showrooms and is available in three trim levels, starting with the Urban Lite. All 107s benefit from a new look, a 1.0-litre petrol engine with exceptionally low CO2 of just 106g/km and economy of 62.7 mpg. The popular Urban model has standard features over the Urban Lite that include body-coloured items, electric front windows, side airbags and remote central door locking, and the choice of either manual and 2-Tronic (an electronically controlled manual that operates as an automatic) transmission.
The new Verve model is a top-of-the-range Special Edition that includes as standard air conditioning, 14-inch alloy wheels and a rev counter, and exclusive availability of the new Mandalin Orange paintwork. For 2009, the new 107 features a design update with enhanced specification plus a new sharper front-end style.
New 14-inch 'Cordouan' wheel trims styled with a seven-spoke design are available while at the rear, there is a dark glass tailgate/rear windscreen separating the angled contours of the rear lights. Two new colours 'Mandalin Orange' and 'Electra Blue' supplement the existing range of Raven Black, Citrus Yellow, Laser Red, Carbon Grey and Zircon Grey.
Simple and functional, the interior of the 107 is also brimming with originality - the seats feature integral head restraints, a distinctive orange back-lit translucent panel for the heating/ventilation or air conditioning system (incorporating graphics with a modern feel), and a single instrument panel from which a rev counter is placed above. Interior trims have developed in line with changes to style and body colours. A new 'Code' trim, accompanied by a silver grey bead on the seat surrounds. The Urban level retains its predominantly grey 'City' mesh trim but also features highlights linked to the sparkling new body colours. This design is another aspect likely to have wide appeal with customers, complementing the new front design aspect and its wider use of chrome decoration.
June 2010
Peugeot launched the 107 Millesim. Powered by an economical three cylinder petrol engine, which emits just 106 g/km, it benefits from zero vehicle excise duty and a group three insurance rating. This means that it is the perfect car from the point of view of low running costs and with the comprehensive standard Millesim specification, the ideal car for customers looking for a small car but still requiring big car features, like air-conditioning, alloy wheels, etc.
It is based on the current Urban Plus model but benefits from a range of extra standard equipment consisting of 14-inch alloy wheels, air-conditioning, a rev counter, special code blue seat trim, blue air vent surrounds, blue instrument binnacle and unique Millesim 200 badging.
January 2012
Revised Peugeot 107 introduced
Featuring a ‘new face', improved fuel economy, lower emissions and enhanced equipment with an upgraded interior. The new restyled 107 is recognisable by the changes to the car's front styling, with a deeper lower front panel with a housing for the front fog lights, LED daytime running lights and a redesigned front bumper.
As part of the restyle of the 107 range, there are 3 trim levels on offer which are in line with the naming strategy of other Peugeot range models (Access, Active and Allure). Within these trim levels, features such as Peugeot Connect Bluetooth and USB and LED Daytime running lights are now available for the first time on the 107 range.
In addition to the new equipment available, the restyled range also offers better equipment across the range with air conditioning now standard on Active level versions, alloy wheels and rev counter, Peugeot Connect Bluetooth and USB standard on Allure level versions. In line with this restyle, the new 107 adopts a competitive pricing strategy with the range starting from £7,995.

What to watch out for
Exhaust back boxes may only last two years before rusting through and water pump failures are common at about three years old. Clutches seem to let in water, leading to surface corrosion and premature wear and can last as little as two and a half years, becoming quite a big issue at £550 a time.
Rear wheel brake cylinders are prone to failure with one case after just four years and 4,000 miles and another just two months from new.
On five-door models the glue holding the rear door windows to the hinge eventually fails and the windows can fall out. Well used key operated drivers door and boot doorlocks may only last just over three years.
Catalytic converters may also fail after two to three years and there are reports of power steering failures at three to four years old, costing £650 for a new motor, though this may have been caused by drivers burning out the motor by holding it on lock.
Water leaks into load area via extractor vent. Have also been water leaks into load area and rear via misfitted rear door and hatch seals or rear light seals. More leaks reported through radiop aerial seal and passenger door seal.
'Whirring whine' from 1.4HDI may be failing timing belt tensioner, which is a roller bearing device like the idler pulley, but with a reddish rubber/nylon damper. Gates cambelt kits include this part. Wise also to replace waterpump which it driven by the timing belt.
Water pump failures common at about 3 years old.
One report of a transmission oil leak on an Aygo (same car).
Exhaust back boxes may only last 2 years before rusting through.
Clutches seem to let in water, leading to surface corrosion and premature wear. Can last as little as two and a half years. TSB to replace 180mm clutches with 190mm clutches. All fitted with 190mm clutch from January 2009 facelift. See recalls.
Rear wheel brake cylinders prone to failure. One case after 4 years and 4,000 miles. Another just 2 months from new.
On 5 door models the glue holding the rear door windows to the hinge eventually fails and the windows fall out.
Well used key operated drivers door and boot doorlocks may only last just over 3 years.
Cat converters may also fail after 2 - 3 years.
Reports of power steering failures at 3 - 4 years old, costing £650 for a new motor, though may have been caused by drivers burning out the motor by holding it on lock.
03-03-2012:Reader reported clutch noise on 107 just over 3 years old. Quoted £ 664 to replace. In addition the dealer also found: radiator bottom joint rusty cost £ 314, water pump leaking cost £ 256, rear suspension mountings pierced cost £143. The car had been serviced by the same dealer just 5 months previously and the service report attached to the invoice showed no defects whatsoever.
28-07-2012:Clutch and waterpump failures common on 2005 - 2009 C1s, 107s and Aygos. Bigger, stronger clutch fitted in production from 2009.
24-03-2014: Another water pump failure on a 19k mile 6 year old Aygo, costing £278 + VAT to replace. This is to be expected in C1s, 107s and Aygos at around 6 years of age.
Most common fault with Citroen C1s in Warranty Direct claims data shown to be cooling and heating system.
18-04-2016:Unfused starter relay of 45k miles 2008 Peugeot 107 stuck on and burned out starter motor.
12-08-2018:Report of electric power steering of 2006 Peugerot 106 reluctant to power up on cold mornings.
