Peugeot 508 (2011 - 2018)
Hybrid 4
Disappointed - but a worthy experiment on Peugeot's part
Need to point out this car is a diesel/electric hybrid. Diesel engine up front and an electric motor in the boot. Cost new was just shy of £32,000.
I've had this car for nearly 4 months now and whilst it's got a lot going for it, I'm left with an overall feeling of disappointment and feel it's way overpriced for what you actually get. The good points first:
- it's very well spec'd
- it's a good looking car inside and out
- great rear legroom
- very low company car tax
- decent stowage capacity inside.
The less favourable points:
- quoted economy of 78mpg is laughable. I can sometimes squeeze 50-51mpg if I have a long motorway run and tootle at 65mph (yes, I've actually tried it). Realistic mpg is closer to 45. I'm guessing the weight of the additional engine more than off-sets the electric only economy gains.
- Peugeot have disabled AM/MW radio reception due to interference from the electrical cables. Unfortunately they don't tell you this in their sales brochures or website. I used to listen to BBC 5 Live on MW but alas no more. Buyer beware! Peugeot will happily sell you a DAB conversion kit for £300 but don't guarantee it'll work properly. Why don't they just fit a DAB radio as standard?? It's a £32,000 car after all.
- after 4 months of trying I can't find a comfortable driving position. I'm 5'9" and normal build and my arms have nowhere to rest as the rests are out of reach. This results in a stiff neck and shoulders after a while. This won't be a problem for a 6 footer though. The steering wheel reach is adjustable but not enough. I now either compromise by having the reach set right but then I'm too close to the pedals or vice versa. I now avoid long journeys where possible as the combination of poor driving position and firm ride make it too uncomfortable.
- gear changes (auto/electrical clutch) cause a noticeable jolt ... not smooth.
- windscreen washers throw up a fine mist rather than a proper jet. They work fine when the car is at low speed but don't work very well at anything above 40mph. You need to get them set just right or accept you'll have to slow down to use them when on a motorway.
- the car regards the flappy paddle shifters as a suggestion from the driver rather than a command to change gear. Sometimes they work other times you have to click them 4-5 times before the car takes notice. Forget trying to change out of 1st with low revs (eg when driving on snow) as it won't happen until over 10mph.
- similar to the shifters, you can politely ask the car to work in electic only mode (known as ZEV). Depending on the car's mood it may do you what you want or might just say ZEV isn't available even when the car's at low speeds with a full battery.
- noisy at speeds over 50mph ... makes hands free phone conversations interesting though!!
If low company car tax and having a relatively uncommon car is your bag then go for it. It's also efficient in urban environments due to the electric motor. Avoid if you need to do lots of motorway miles, value fuel economy or are less than 6 feet tall.
