The new MG4 EV XPower is a thrilling hot hatch range-topper for the MG4 EV electric car range that is now open for ordering. With a wild 435PS, it is the most powerful MG ever and more potent than almost every other hot hatch on sale.
The new MG4 EV XPower’s remarkable power output is achieved by a dual-motor powertrain. This means it has all-wheel drive, helping deliver 0-62mph acceleration in just 3.8 seconds. That’s faster than even a Mercedes-AMG A45 S.
The new MG4 EV XPower is also faster than the famed MG XPower SV supercar of the 2000s – and it is more powerful than even the range-topping 5.0-litre V8 SV-R version.
There currently aren’t many electric hot hatch rivals to the new MG4 EV XPower. The Cupra Born is its closest challenger, but this only produces up to 230PS. The closely-related Volkswagen ID.3 also produces up to 204PS while the new Vauxhall Astra Electric has 154PS.
The new MG4 EV XPower is actually an intriguing alternative to a Tesla Model 3. Not only is it far cheaper, the new MG4 EV XPower is faster than both regular and Long Range Tesla Model 3. Only the Performance version beats it for acceleration.
2023 MG4 EV XPower prices and release date
The new MG4 EV XPower is open for ordering now. The new car is making its public debut at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Deliveries are expected to start later this year.
The new MG4 EV XPower’s other great headline stat is its price – the range starts from £36,495. The cheapest Tesla Model 3 is almost £43k and the Volkswagen Golf GTI, the world’s original hot hatch, starts from £39,435. New MG4 EV XPower prices are, considering its power and performance, a bargain.
2023 MG4 EV XPower styling, interior and technology
The new MG4 EV XPower has relatively restrained styling, given its huge hike in power. The exterior enhancements are described as 'subtle' and focus on new 18-inch Cyclone alloy wheels. Behind them hide uprated 345mm brake discs with orange XPower calipers.
The new MG4 EV XPower’s uprated brakes and grippy premium Bridgestone Turanza tyres help cut the 62-0mph stopping distance to just 33.9 metres.
The new MG4 EV XPower also has a two-tone black roof, polished trim accents and a bespoke new Racing Green colour options. Bosses describe the new MG4 EV XPower as a "pure performance offering which is the antithesis of the traditionally 'loud' high-performance hatchback".
Inside, the new MG4 EV XPower’s interior is similar to the regular MG4 EV, which already has a sporty feel and distinctive flat-bottom steering wheel. Black Alcantara upholstery gives it a sporty feel and heated front seats include electric adjustment for the driver’s seat.
The new MG4 EV XPower has a 7.0-inch driver information display and a 10.25-inch central touchscreen. The infotainment system has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus standard sat nav. It also has live services including weather, traffic and Amazon Music.
The new MG4 EV XPower includes a bespoke performance display within the infotainment system. The Dynamic Driving Management page has a Track Mode display with performance, power distribution, speed and time, G-force plus steering and throttle angle.
The MG4 EV XPower has a six-speaker audio system with 3D sound and a 360-degree reversing camera built into the infotainment system.
The new MG4 EV XPower measures 4287mm long, 1836mm wide and 1516mm tall, making it similar in size to a Volkswagen ID.3. It has a five-seat interior and the 363-litre boot expands to 1165 litres with the rear seats folded.
2023 MG4 EV XPower electric motor, performance and range
The new MG4 EV XPower uses a new dual motor configuration that delivers 435PS via a smart all-wheel drive system. The front motor produces 204PS and the rear motor produces 234PS. The two electric motors produce a surging overall torque figure of 600Nm.
The MG4 EV XPower’s performance is suitably vivid. Accelerating from 0-62mph takes 3.8 seconds, which is faster than a Porsche 911 Carrera, while top speed is capped to 124mph.
To help make the most of its performance potential, the MG4 EV XPower has a standard launch control feature. This makes the most of the smart all-wheel drive and means supercar levels of acceleration can be enjoyed with ease.
The new MG4 EX XPower also comes with a Dynamic Cornering Control System. This comprises a locking electronic differential and Intelligent Motor Control that facilitates torque vectoring between all four wheels. Traction is improved, says MG Motor, as is composure in all driving conditions.
The new MG4 EV XPower is based on the firm’s Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) architecture. Springs and dampers have been recalibrated, anti-roll bars stiffened and steering tightened up to make it sharper. The regular MG4 EV already handles well, and the upgrades should make the new MG4 EV XPower even more fun.
The new MG4 EV XPower uses a ‘Long Range’ 64kWh battery. It has an official WLTP EV range of 239 miles. The new MG4 EV XPower can use 150kw rapid chargers, to top up from 10-80% in 33 minutes.
As well as the uprated braking system, the new MG4 EV XPower also has recalibrated regenerative braking software. This allows one-pedal driving, which some find more convenient, and which helps improve the range by maximising brake regeneration.
“We’re confident the MG4 EV XPower will shake up the market,” says MG, “showing that a compact EV can be affordable, practical and a terrific drive.”
