The new Ford Tourneo Courier is the latest step in Ford’s complete reinvention of its European model range. The clean-sheet design is part of Ford’s plan to make its new cars ‘unapologetically American’. The distinctive styling of the new model certainly lives up to this aim.
The new Ford Tourneo Courier is a crossover-look people carrier MPV which will eventually become Ford’s new entry-level model. It will effectively take the place of the Ford Fiesta. It is the passenger car version of the new Ford Transit Courier.
Part of the Tourneo MPV range, the new Ford Tourneo Courier sits below the Ford Tourneo Connect (which is derived from the Volkswagen Caddy) and Ford Tourneo Custom. There will also be a pure electric version, called the new Ford E-Tourneo Courier.
The new Ford Tourneo Courier will take on a range of rivals including the Citroen Berlingo, Volkswagen Caddy, Vauxhall Combo Life, Fiat Doblo and Peugeot Rifter.
2023 Ford Tourneo Courier prices and release date
The new Ford Tourneo Courier arrives first in petrol-powered guise. Ford says ordering opens this summer, with first deliveries expected before the end of 2023.
The new Ford E-Tourneo Courier will open for ordering in 2024. It is expected to be released to customers from late 2024.
2023 Ford Tourneo Courier styling, interior and technology
The new Ford Tourneo Courier’s styling has been transformed. The previous model was a rather awkward-looking thing, looking not dissimilar to a Ford Fiesta wearing a top hat. It was phased out in 2021.
The new Ford Tourneo Courier is much more distinctive. With its square lines and upright nature, it is a van-derived passenger car that is infused with SUV-style crossover cool. Ford has further enhanced this with some smart colour and trim packs, to really set it apart.
The new Ford Tourneo Courier is referred to as a multi-activity vehicle, or MAV. This is a lifestyle makeover for the long-lived MPV, which has fallen out of favour in recent years. Ford will be oping the new Tourneo Courier helps revive the sector.
A high bonnet line and short overhangs give the new Ford Tourneo Courier a squat stance. Black pillars visually lower the roofline and give a ‘continuous glazing’ effect. Distinctive body colour choices include Cactus Grey, Fantastic Red and Bursting Green.
All new Ford Tourneo Courier have a large and distinctive grille, with a big Ford blue oval logo in the centre. The new Ford E-Tourneo Courier is marked out by a unique chrome diamond grille, plus a full-width LED light bar. It also has more aerodynamic wheel designs.
There will be a range-topping new Ford Tourneo Courier Active variant. This will feature a contrast roof colour, plus unique 17-inch alloy wheels, roof bars, wheel arch mouldings and lower scuff plates. Trend and Titanium models will also be available.
Dimensions of the new Ford Tourneo Courier have not yet been revealed. Bosses refer to it as a city-friendly MPV. Expect it to measure under 4.4 metres long, positioning it below the larger Ford Tourneo Connect (and similar in size to a Ford Focus). The new Ford Tourneo Courier will have a handy 10.7-metre turning circle.
The new Ford Tourneo Courier is extremely spacious inside. It has a super-tall roof, giving plentiful headroom, while the flat sides enable three passengers to sit alongside one another in the rear. Sliding rear doors also aid rear seat access.
A smart, straightforward dashboard ensures the new Ford Tourneo Courier is easy to use. It is described as ‘no-nonsense’ by Ford. Tough trims and wipe-clean upholstery add to the practicality. Active models have unique seat fabrics. The infotainment system includes standard wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a wireless smartphone charging pad.
Ford says boot space of more than 570 litres is a hefty 44% bigger than the outgoing Ford Tourneo Courier. It is longer and wider than before, and there is a handy hinged boot cubby that’s idea for swallowing muddy boots. The large tailgate shelters people from the elements when open, and a low step height make loading easier.
The new Ford Tourneo Courier has a 60-40 split rear bench seat. It offers a massive 2162 litres of space when the rear seats are folded. The load weight is also up 100kg, allowing heavier lifestyle items to be carried. The new Ford Tourneo Courier can tow up to 1000kg.
The new Ford E-Tourneo Courier has specific details including a ‘squircle’ steering wheel that boosts driver legroom and visibility. It has a full-width ‘digiboard’ with 12.0-inch digital cluster and central 12.0-inch infotainment touchscreen running the Ford Sync 4 system.
The overall ‘floating’ instrument panel design is more space-efficient and improves visibility – as do an electronic parking brake and column-mounted gearshifter.
The new Ford E-Tourneo Courier has a new extra-large centre console. This is fully configurable with removable elements to organise and secure items. Bosses add the new Ford E-Tourneo Courier has an additional 44-litre frunk that’s ideal for stowing charging cables.
2023 Ford Tourneo Courier engines, electric motor and performance
The new Ford Tourneo Courier launches later in 2023 with the familiar 125ps 1.0-litre Ecoboost three-cylinder turbo petrol engine. It will be offered with either a six-speed manual gearbox, or a seven-speed DCT dual clutch automatic.
The new Ford E-Tourneo Courier EV will offer a 136ps e-motor, which includes a convenient one-pedal driving mode. Normal, Eco and Slippery drive modes give multi-surface configurability.
The new Ford E-Tourneo Courier will be able to use 100kW DC rapid chargers, to add 54 miles in 10 minutes, and charge from 10-80% in under 35 minutes. Battery capacity has not yet been revealed, but it’s likely to be around 55kWh, which should give a driving range of around 230 miles – aided by a top speed capped to 90mph.
The new Ford Tourneo Courier is based on the firm’s B2E architecture, also used by the Ford Puma. This should ensure strong driving dynamics and a comfortable ride.
