  • Renault 4 will go on sale in 2025, with prices starting from £30,000

The reborn 2025 Renault 4 electric small SUV has been previewed for the first time at the 2022 Paris Motor Show by the radical Renault 4Ever Trophy concept car.

The new 2025 Renault 4 will be an all-electric retro recreation of the 1962 original, of which more than eight million were sold. It will be the small SUV sister car to the new 2024 electric Renault 5. The company says the two new cars will sit alongside one another, in a similar way to today’s Renault Captur and Clio.

The exciting Renault 4Ever Trophy is a high-profile concept that aims to put the idea of a new mode 4 firmly in the minds of those who are looking to buy or lease a new Renault in the coming years.

2025 Renault 4 prices and release date

The Renault 4Ever Trophy is our first look at the new electric Renault 4, which will be released in 2025. The concept is being revealed 60 years after the launch of the original Renault 4 to help mark the famous car’s comeback. The next few years will be spent building up the profile of Renault’s new small electric SUV, ready for relaunch.

We expect the new Renault 4 to cost upwards of £30,000, in line with more conventional small SUV rivals such as the Vauxhall Mokka Electric, DS 3 E-Tense and Peugeot e-2008. Renault will use the retro appeal of the new 2025 model 4 to help position it as a premium, upmarket new car.

2025 Renault 4 styling, interior and technology

The new Renault 4Ever Trophy is a fun and dramatic concept that gives our first impression of how the new 2025 Renault 4 electric will look. Compared to the 2024 Renault 5, it is a notably higher-riding machine, with the concept car designers keen to underline the fact this will be a small and rugged SUV.

The 2022 4Ever Trophy concept revives the original Renault 4’s trademark features in a stylish new way. Immediately recognisable is the overall silhouette, with a bold bonnet, bumper and angled rear end. Trapezoidal rear side windows, with rounded corners, sit right above the rear wheels, just like the original, and the front wings are free of side repeaters or other details. The wings also have a vertical cut and sit proud of the wide bonnet – again, just like the original Renault 4.

To bring the new Renault 4Ever Trophy concept bang-up-to-date, Renault has developed sculptural curves for some of the panels, plus a very elaborate grille that includes a freestanding, illuminated version of the firm’s latest logo.

There are also built-in round lights with Matrix LED technology, plus additional square lamps, giving the new model a distinctive identity. Another retro touch is at the rear, where the famous pill-shaped lamps of the classic Renault 4 have been redesigned using contemporary LED technology.

We love the cool new dayglo pink Renault 4 logo, too – a colour that is used throughout the Gun Metal Silver vehicle, including on the straps holding down the spare wheel that sits on the carbon fibre roof, and those securing the shovel and waffle boards on the bootlid. It’s all part of Renault’s determination to underline the new Renault 4Ever Trophy’s proper off-road abilities.

The new Renault 4Ever Trophy has large 19-inch alloy wheels front and rear, wearing 255/55-section tyres. It has a huge 200mm of ground clearance around the wheelarches, while the high-seated body further emphasises the size of the 753mm wheels. It looks impressively rugged – and a reinforced underbody means it can deal with all-terrain bangs and crashes.

The new Renault 4 will be based on the firm’s latest CMF-BEV platform for compact-sized B-segment electric cars. Renault says it’s a fully flexible platform, allowing freedom of styling and design without compromising range, acoustics or on-road behaviour.

Renault has not yet revealed the interior of the new Renault 4Ever Trophy, but we expect a modern and contemporary appearance – again, one faithful to the simple layout of the original Renault 4. Like the new Renault Megane E-Tech Electric, it will use the latest Android Automotive OS-based infotainment tech, with built-in Google Maps, Google Assistant and Google Play app store. Want to alter the temperature, or change the radio station? Simply say “Hey Google,” and your wish will be answered.

2025 Renault 4 batteries, performance and fuel economy

The new Renault 4 will be a pure electric car, similar to current models such as the Zoe. The French company has not yet revealed technical details, but we expect it will use a battery sized around 50kWh for a range of around 250 miles, plus a 140PS electric motor delivering decent performance and ample pulling power.

The authentic, SUV-look Renault 4Ever Trophy is a radical interpretation of this future production car. As it’s an EV, it also wouldn’t be difficult to add an extra electric motor, for four-wheel-drive traction and plenty of off-road ability.

That said, while the Renault 4Ever Trophy is designed as an off-road car by nature, the 2025 Renault 4 production car will be more of an all-rounder, for an enjoyable drive on all road types. ‘The future electric 4L aims to be as versatile as its predecessor once was,’ says Renault.

Will the Renault 4 replace the Zoe?

The current Renault Zoe is a popular car that can be bought second-hand, in facelifted 2021 guise, from around £20,000. By 2025, it will have been replaced by the Renault 5 hatchback, with the new Renault 4 offering a modern retro SUV alternative.

How big is the new Renault 4?

The new Renault 4 will be a small hatch-sized SUV. The Renault 4Ever Trophy concept measures 4160mm long and 1,900 high, plus an exaggerated 1,950mm wide. Don’t expect the production car to be quite this tall and wide.

Where will the new Renault 4 be built?

The new Renault 4 will be built at the ElectriCity hub in northern France. It will be assembled alongside all other cars using the CMF-BEV electric platform, including the forthcoming new Renault 5.

Are there specific tyres for EVs and hybrids?

Are some tyres made especially for electric/hybrid cars and, if so, what are the differences and why?
Yes, there are a number of specifically designed tyres for electric cars on the market. There are a number of reasons why, but the main factors that are more important on EV tyres than regular tyres are: rolling resistance (how much energy is needed to keep the tyre rolling to improve range), noise reduction (the lack of engine noise makes tyre noise more prominent) and weight and durability because electric cars are heavier, putting more pressure on the tyre surface. Tyre companies are prioritising these traits on EV-specific tyres.

Should I leave my EV charging while I'm on holiday?

My Kia EV6 GT Line S will be four weeks old when I go on holiday for two months. Can you please advise whether or not I should leave it plugged into my Pod Point charger while I'm away?
Kia recommends fully charging an EV before leaving it for an extended period. You won't do any harm by leaving it plugged in - the car will stop charging when it's full to prevent any issues.
