Citroen C3 Review 2024

Citroen C3 At A Glance

3/5
Honest John Overall Rating
Citroen sets itself apart from rivals with the way its C3 supermini looks. The funky style is matched by the C3's focus on comfort, helped by its lushly padded seats. It's not the most exciting car in the class to drive, but it's cheap to run and maintain.

+Comfortable seats and ride quality. Much improved interior quality. Standard built-in dash cam on Flair models.

-Entry-level model misses out on some key equipment. Rear legroom tight with taller passengers up front. Manual gear change feels sloppy.

New prices start from £10,995
Insurance Groups are between 10–21
On average it achieves 74% of the official MPG figure

Inspired by the air-bump covered C4 Cactus, the Citroen C3 is cute and stylish – but it isn’t just a pretty face. It’s comfortable, easy-to-drive and comes with a great engine range. There are some unique features too, like the option of a built-in dash camera. Read on for our full review of the Citroen C3.

Despite its compact size, the Citroen C3 has a spacious cabin along with a decent boot. Rear legroom is a bit tight with tall passengers up front, but there’s plenty of headroom and access is good thanks to the five-door body. The 300-litre boot is plenty for shopping trips and luggage, but buggies might be a squeeze.

On the road the Citroen C3 is very comfortable, with good ride quality and quiet engines, whether you choose petrol or diesel. It’s not the sharpest-handling small hatchback, but if you’re more interested in taking it easy than tearing down country lanes that’s no bad thing.

There's a 1.2-litre PureTech petrol engine with two power outputs, plus a BlueHDi diesel with 100PS. The more powerful 110PS PureTech is offered with a manual or automatic gearbox. Emissions are low across the board and should make for affordable running costs. The most frugal diesel is officially capable of 80.7mpg, while the petrols all manage around 60mpg officially.

Plenty of technology comes as standard, including lane departure warning, speed limit recognition, cruise control, a speed limiter, Bluetooth and DAB radio. Moving up to mid-level Feel trim adds alloy wheels and a big, clear touchscreen system with MirrorLink and Apple CarPlay connectivity.

The unique gimmick of the Citroen C3 is ConnectedCam, a built-in, GPS-enabled screen camera. It's standard in top Flair models and has a button under the rear view mirror for taking instant snaps of events on the road ahead, plus 128Gb storage for saving video clips. It will even automatically save clips if it detects an accident, though footage isn’t as quite as clear as many aftermarket dash cameras. It needs to be linked to a smartphone to which an App has to be downloaded, then stores photos in the phone's picture library.

You can customise a Citroen C3 with various contrasting roof colours, air bumps and door mirror caps – but on most trim levels the air bumps are optional. They’re standard on top models but if you’re not keen on the way they look they can be deleted at no cost.

If you’re more interested in style, customisation and comfort than sporty driving, then the Citroen C3 is a great choice of small hatchback. It’s surprisingly practical, with a spacious, airy cabin, plus it’s reasonably priced and should prove affordable to run.

Citroen C3 handling and engines

Driving Rating
Comfort takes precedence over dynamics with the C3, but it's still decent to drive around town thanks to a tight turning circle. On faster stretches, the C3 is less composed and a Skoda Fabia is a better all-rounder.

Citroen C3 2024: Handling and ride quality

With the C3, Citroen has prioritised comfort over agile handling. Over lumpy roads it rides well, ironing out all but the harshest potholes without much fuss. The result is a little body roll when tackling bends, but there’s plenty of front-end grip to keep things pointed in the right direction. It feels very comfortable for a small hatchback.

At a faster out-of-town pace, the C3 begins to show chinks in its driving manners that are not present in a Skoda Fabia. There's a bit too much lean in corners and the Citroen's suspension can struggle to maintain its smoothness over potholes.

Drive the C3 in the relaxed manner it prefers, however, and it's a good bet for those who don't head out of town often. For other drivers, there are more rounded superminis to choose from.

Citroen C3 2024: Engines

There is a 1.2-litre PureTech petrol engine that comes in two versions - 83PS and 110PS. Plus there's a 1.6-litre HDi turbodiesel that comes with 100PS. Of these, the best bet for most buyers is likely the 83PS petrol, since it blends running costs, price and performance very well.

All the engines are pretty perky and responsive, but the higher output engines are more relaxed and capable on higher speed roads like motorways, where the C3 is surprisingly refined and quiet, plus it has cruise control as standard.

There's a five-speed manual gearbox as standard for the 83PS 1.2 petrol, while the 110PS motor and the diesel have a six-speed manual. If you want to really relax, then the optional six-speed EAT6 auto is the best bet, though it is only available with the 110PS petrol engine.

Citroen C3 2024: Safety

Whichever Citroen C3 you go for, all come with a Lane Departure Warning System, and cruise control with speed limiter. They also have six airbags and rear Isofix child seat mounts. On top trim models, you get the Citroen Connect Box to contact the emergency services if the car detects it’s been in a collision. The Shine Plus model also has a Driver Attention Alert to let you know if you should be taking a break from behind the wheel.

A four-star Euro NCAP rating reflects the Citroen C3 has now been around since 2017 and standards have increased and improved across the board. Passenger safety is still good, but the C3 misses some standard safety kit that some rivals include.

Citroen C3 2024: Towing

The maximum unbraked trailer weight for a Citroen C3 is 450kg. With brakes, the diesel and 110PS petrol with manual gearbox can cope with up to 600kg, but the other versions are restricted to 450kg.

Citroen C3 interior

Interior Rating
A different spin on the supermini cabin sees the Citroen C3 place comfort above all else. It's a largely successful approach, and the C3 has some stylish touches to boot. Space is on a par with most in the class, but the infotainment is now looks and feels very behind the times.

Citroen C3 2024: Practicality

Front seat passengers will have no trouble getting comfortable, but with taller occupants up front there is very limited rear legroom. There's seat height adjustment as standard in all C3s, but the driver can still feel they are sitting up quite high. This is good for all-round vision, however, and the C3 is very easy to judge when parking.

Children won’t have trouble getting comfortable in the back seats, plus the five-door layout means access is good. Boot space is decent too at 300 litres, but there is a high load lip, which gets in the way when unloading.

That’s no issue for the usual shopping trips and weekends away though – and there’s more than enough space for those. Folding the rear seats frees up 922 litres, but the seat backs don’t fold flat so big, bulky objects might be difficult to get in and out.

Citroen C3 2024: Quality and finish

Material quality is sturdy and while there aren’t many posh soft-touch plastics to be found, the quirky design means it doesn’t feel cheap. In a corner of the market where small things can make a big difference to a buying decision, this counts in the C3's favour as it's a car you enjoy spending time in.

Citroen C3 2024: Infotainment

Given there are only four trims in the Citroen C3 line-up, there’s a fair degree of variation with the infotainment fitted depending on which trim you pick. The entry-point YOU! has nothing more than a basic 5-inch black-and-white touchscreen, though it does link easily with Bluetooth.

The C-Series Edition and Elle versions improve matters with a 7-inch colour touch-sensitive display with Mirror Screen to work with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Or you can have the same infotainment in the Shine Plus model but with Citroen’s Connected Nav. This offers Real Time Traffic and Speedcam data, as well as an emergency assistance link.

Because the C3’s infotainment screen is mounted lower in the dash than many rivals, it takes a split second longer to look down and read it. Another demerit is there are no physical buttons as everything is worked through the screen itself, and it’s not the most responsive. With the basic YOU! version of the C3, there are individual buttons for the air conditioning, which is an argument for choosing this trim in our view.

Citroen C3 value for money

Value for Money Rating
There's a bit of a leap from the entry-point C3 to the next model, but it's still one of the most affordable superminis on the market. Low running costs are a big part of this car's attraction.

Citroen C3 2024: Prices

Keep it simple and the entry-level YOU! trim of Citroen C3 comes in just shy of £14,000. That's strong value in today's supermini field. However, to move to the next trim up with the same 1.2-litre engine and manual gearbox requires almost another £4000. That is a very considerable leap and shows the basic trim is there to tempt customers in.

If you do decide to head up the C3 scale, the most expensive Shine Plus with the turbodiesel engine is nudging £23,000. For that amount, there are plenty of other cars you could pick from. On the used market, the C3 represents a much keener deal.

Citroen C3 2024: Running Costs

A big part of the Citroen C3's appeal lies in its affordable running costs. Whether you choose the petrol or diesel engine, Citroen claims the C3 will return at least 50mpg combined fuel economy, claiming 50.8mpg for the petrol auto. Best of the lot is the diesel that has an official average figure of 70.6mpg.

The diesel model also has the lowest carbon dioxide emissions, producing 119g/km. Highest emissions come with the 110PS 1.2 petrol coupled to the six-speed automatic transmission, which produces 136g/km so it pays a first-year Vehicle Excise Duty rate of £255 where the other C3 versions come in at £210 for road tax for the first 12 months.

Oddly, the lowest insurance rating for the C3 is for one in the highest trim. This is the Shine Plus but with the least powerful 83PS 1.2-litre petrol engine. This motor in base YOU! trim sits in Group 14. Other versions of the C3 reside in Groups 13 to 19 depending on engine, gearbox, and trim level.

Citroen C3 models and specs

The starting point for the Citroen C3 range is the YOU! trim that makes do with steel wheels, though it does have LED headlights. It also comes with electric front windows, air conditioning, cruise control, and lane departure warning. Another likeable touch are the heated door mirrors to make chilly mornings that bit easier to bear.

Next in line is the C-Series Edition that has two-tone painted 16-inch alloy wheels and body-coloured bumpers. It also has the trademark Airbump on its doors plus front foglights and automatic headlights. Inside, this trim comes with the larger 7-inch infotainment colour touchscreen and a USB connection.

The following trim is the Elle that has 17-inch alloy wheels, contrasting colour roof, and rear privacy glass. It enjoys automatic wipers and rear electric windows, as well as its own unique cloth upholstery. The Elle benefits from a reversing camera and rear parking sensors. Switch to the top spec Shine Plus and you get Citroen Connect Nav with Real Time Traffic and Speedcam information. This trim also gains the Safety Pack 2 with automatic emergency braking, collision risk alert, and Intelligent Beam Headlights.

Model History

June 2016

New Citroen C3 revealed

New C3 features a two-tier front light signature synonymous with Citroen. Double chrome strips extend from the chevrons and go all the way across to the LED daytime running lights. The protective front bumper blends into the rest of the bodywork to enhance the sense of height and width at the front for a ‘go-anywhere’ look and feel. The fog lights even feature stylish coloured surrounds.

3,990mm long x 1,750mm wide x 1,470mm high on 2,540mm wheelbase.

In profile, the black windscreen pillars and floating roof accentuate the dynamic outline of New C3. The car’s protective character is evident in the balanced proportions between the body panels and the glazed areas. The horizontal styling features on the sides of the car continue the deliberately high bonnet line, producing a reassuring posture, and the wheel arches are fitted with extensions for a crossover appearance. At the rear, the generously sized, muscular wings give the car a dynamic appearance, an impression accentuated by the very short overhang.

The Airbump panels (air-filled bumps with a scratch-proof surface, as seen on C4 Cactus) are a Citroen signature feature, offering personality and style, as well as protecting the vehicle. The thermoplastic polyurethane material used in the Airbump panels resists everyday degradation, protecting them from sunlight, water, scratches etc. Each panel positions a line of air-filled bumps at the bottom of the doors to protect the most vulnerable areas of the car in the urban environment. The Airbump panels also have a white or red graphic motif, depending on the version.

The customer has a choice of finishes inside the cabin. Some elements can be painted, wrapped with textile or TEP lining (with or without over-stitching) and finished with chrome or coloured touches. The finish is always designed to perfectly match the seat material.

The seats, integral to on-board wellbeing, have a uniquely wide and generous design, which amplifies the impression of space and comfort. This is further enhanced by the use of bright, warm materials.

With a total of nine body colours (Polar White, Perla Nera Black, Shark Grey, Arctic Steel, Ruby Red, Almond Green, Cobalt Blue, Power Orange and Soft Sand) and three roof colours (Opal White, Onyx Black and Sport Red), there are a total of 36 possible combinations, giving New C3 a fresh, modern look.

The exterior offers a range of two-tone paint options, with the three roof colours accompanied by matching touches around the car (fog lights, door mirrors, rear quarter panels and on the Airbump® panels).

Buyers can select from four possible interior designs. These are -

  • Standard Ambience – uncluttered and neutral with yellow over-stitched upholstery.
  • Metropolitan Grey Ambience – a warm and bright alternative, with soft colours and textiles, on the dashboard trim as well as the seat upholstery.
  • Urban Red Ambience – a combination of dark and bright colours. The dashboard trim features red over-stitching and a red dashboard surround.
  • Hype Colorado Ambience – features soft upmarket materials and special upholstery for a colour-contrast effect, and a two-tone leather-covered steering wheel.

Particularly agile thanks to its 10.7m turning circle, the 5-door, 5-seat New C3 measures just 3.99m long.

As well as Mirrorlink and Apple Car Play, the C3 has a built-in GPS connected forward camera. With a 120-degree field of view, full HD and 16Gb capacity, this allows the driver to record journeys, take photographs and, more importantly, automatically secures 30 seconds of video before a bump and 60 seconds afterwards.

January 2018

February 2020

Updated Citroen C3 revealed

Citroen has revealed a facelifted version of its C3 with new lights, refreshed alloy wheels and no fewer than 97 colour combinations.

Inside, there are new Citroen Advanced Comfort seats - similar to those used in the C5 Aircross - as well as a front armrest, offered for the first time. The brand says its interior nods to Scandinavian furniture with soft-touch materials, special stitching and even wooden dashboard trim.

A number of driving assistance features are also available including front parking sensors - another first.

The C3's seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system remains, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.

The engine line-up will also remain the same, including a three-cylinder PureTech petrol with 83 or 110PS, and a 100PS BlueHDi diesel.

Orders will open for the updated C3 in April 2020 with customer deliveries from June.

June 2020

Drivers have a choice of efficient petrol and diesel engines. The entry-level ‘Feel’ trim features the petrol PureTech 83 S&S manual powertrain, while ‘Flair’ and ‘Flair Plus’ models feature the same PureTech 83 S&S unit, or additional choices as follows:

Petrol Citroen C3 range sees CO2 cut

Citroen has announced reductions of between 3 and 7g/km of CO2 across the C3 PureTech 3-cylinder petrol engine range.

Available on the updated Citroen C3 from October 2020 production, the developments comprise new batteries on versions equipped with a manual gearbox, with the entry-level PureTech 83 Stop and Start manual also receiving a new alternator to further optimise efficiency. In addition to this, all new C3 PureTech petrol models will also benefit from a fuel consumption meter as standard fitment ahead of the January 2021 regulations that see their installation become mandatory.

Pricing remains unchanged with prices starting from £16,280. For company car drivers, the lower CO2 emissions result in BIK tax band reductions of up to 2% – as an example, this reduces the monthly tax bill of a 40% tax payer by over £140 in the 2021-22 period (when driving a Flair Plus PureTech 83 S&S manual).

October 2021

Updated Citroen C3 range priced from £14,180

Citroen UK has revealed updates to its C3 line-up, with a rationalised and re-structured range available from October 2021 production. With prices starting from £14,180 OTR, Citroën C3 now provides customers with a more streamlined series of trim and engine variants.

The updated Citroen C3 range sees the ‘Shine’ trim level depart the range, whilst the recently introduced and popular ‘Saint James’ trim moves to a more prominent position in the C3 line-up. This change provides buyers with a strong customer advantage, with ‘Saint James’ models enjoying a significant uplift in specification versus the outgoing ‘Shine’ trim for a modest £400 additional outlay.

With a distinctive look, Citroen C3 ‘Saint James’ is a proud illustration of the brand’s French heritage, taking inspiration from the Saint James clothing brand that was founded in 1889 and celebrating the artisan traditions of north-west France.

Available with a choice of PureTech 83 S&S manual or PureTech 110 S&S 6-speed automatic petrol powertrains, Citroen C3 ‘Saint James’ enjoys a wealth of standard specification over and above the outgoing ‘Shine’ trim. Standard equipment includes sumptuous Advanced Comfort seats, featuring broad cushions and cossetting seat backs. The design combines high-density foam at the heart of each seat, a thick, textured foam on the surface and a carefully selected blend of soft fabric and leather-effect materials to ensure optimum comfort on any journey.

C3 ‘Saint James’ also offers design features that are unique within the C3 range, including an exclusive ‘Saint James’ exterior styling pack with logos and a ‘Saint James’ roof decal, a soft touch dashboard facia and bespoke carpet mats. Other features offered over and above outgoing ‘Shine’ models include a leather-covered steering wheel, reversing camera, dark tinted windows and 16-inch ‘Hellix’ bi-tone diamond cut alloy wheels.

Citroen C3 ‘Saint James’ is joined in the line-up by ‘Sense’, ‘C-Series’ and ‘Shine Plus’ models, with the ‘Shine’ trim level no longer available.

Pricing for the revised Citroen C3 range starts from just £14,180 MRRP OTR.
