XPeng launches in the UK

High-tech electric car brand XPeng is the latest Chinese manufacturer to launch in the UK. It is set to debut in early 2025.

The launch car will be the XPeng G6, an electric SUV rival to the Tesla Model Y.

Its UK distributor will be International Motors Limited (IML), the company well-known over the years for selling Subaru.

XPeng is the second Chinese brand IML will be distributing through dealers across the UK, following its launch of GWM ORA in late 2022.

The same dealers will be among those who may take on the new XPeng franchise.

The XPeng G6 is a coupe-SUV described as having state-of-the-art operating systems and industry-leading technology.

The top-spec version has an EV range of more than 350 miles and includes 800-volt architecture for super-fast recharging. The "next-generation driving experience has also been tailored for European preferences," promises XPeng.

More details of UK-spec XPeng G6, including prices, are set to be announced before the end of the year, a spokesman told us.

The XPeng G6, which has recently been awarded a Euro NCAP five-star safety score, was first seen in the UK at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.

"We are excited to introduce UK consumers to a new standard in electric mobility," says Alex Tang, head of international business at XPeng. "It combines innovative technology with exceptional design to deliver an unparalleled experience that meets the demands of today's drivers."

"With a vision for AI-defined mobility, we aim to revolutionize the driving experience in the UK, making it safer, smarter, more sustainable and more pleasant in the near future," he adds.

Is the Omoda brand any good?

Any thoughts on the new to UK Chinese brand Omoda? I think it’s owned by Cherry. The first model seems good value, although basic engines.
Omoda is a Chinese brand that is new to the UK this year and is a subsidiary of Chery, a large Chinese automotive manufacturer. So far the only model is the Omoda 5, a family-sized SUV that is competing with cars like the Nissan Qashqai and the MG HS, although a larger SUV model is expected to join the range. We've yet to try the Omoda for ourselves on UK roads but initial impressions suggest that it is good value and has a strong specification, but lags behind key rivals in terms of space efficiency and the driving experience. Given that Omoda is backed by Chery it seems unlikely that it will disappear quickly, but with a limited model range at the moment and a dealer network that is yet to reach 100 locations, it might be worth waiting a while to see how it progresses in the UK.
