SsangYong rebrands as KGM
Long-running value SUV brand SsangYong has been renamed KGM in the UK as part of a new global identity.
The SsangYong Motors UK business has rebranded to KGM Motors UK, and both new cars and dealers are adopting the new identity.
All 73 KGM UK dealers will have a new look by the middle of the year, while the firm’s customer website also adopts the new look.
The old SsangYong model names will remain the same, though – but the existing Tivoli, Korando, Rexton and Musso will be branded KGM instead.
Even the old SsangYong winged logo remains the same. The firm’s five-year warranty continues too – and a spokesperson confirmed to Honest John that warranties for existing SsangYong customers remain fully valid.
KGM Motor UK MD Kevin Griffin called the rebrand an "important and fundamental stepping stone" as the firm aims to evolve from a traditional manufacturing company into one that is "future-oriented, utilises new technologies and ventures into electrification, autonomous driving and connectivity."
The South Korean firm’s rebrand as KGM will see a UK line-up reshuffle, including new names and revised specifications.
KGM aims to adopt a new model naming strategy that will span K20, K30, K40 and K50 variants. Specifications will be upgraded and there will be just two model variants per vehicle.
Only the Musso will retain its existing name, along with established trims including EX, Rebel and Saracen variants.
KGM has previewed some of the surprising new models coming too – with the petrol-powered Torres and electric Torres EVX family SUVs (pictured above) arriving in the next few months.
There will also be an electric pickup, an electric mid-size SUV and an electric large SUV. Production of these will start in the second half of 2024.
"As with the new brand identity, this marks a new era for both design and product, with all models moving forward adhering to this new approach – and we have some exciting new model launches coming," adds Griffin.
