Paris Motor Show 2016: Audi Q5 gains tech and sheds weight for 2017
Audi has unveiled the all-new Audi Q5 at the Paris Motor Show 2016. The new Q5 is larger and more upmarket than the SUV it replaces, but weighs 90kg less thanks to its new lightweight platform and construction. Prices are still to be confirmed, but expect the new Audi Q5 to reach showrooms in early 2017.
Audi has retained the familiar Q5 shape, but extended the body to 4.6 metres in length and 1.9 metres in width. As a result it looks more substantial than previously; although, its enlarged dimensions have been put to good use, with more head and leg room than before. Boot space has also been increased to a maximum of 610 litres and all Q5s gets a power-operated tailgate as standard.
The Q5 will be available with front-wheel or four-wheel drive, with the latter getting the option of Ultra tech that will automatically disengaging the rear-axle drive whenever it is not needed to save fuel. The engine line-up consists of a five powertrains: a 2.0 TDI with 150PS, 163PS or 190PS.
A 2.0 TSI will also be offered, with 252PS, returning an official 41.5mpg and 154g/km of CO2. A range-topping 286PS be added to the range later, with 286PS. Audi hasn’t released any economy figures for the diesels yet.
Inside the Q5 will be offered with Audi's virtual cockpit system, which sits inside the instrument binnacle to display navigation, speed and fuel levels. The centre console gets Audi’s familiar MMI control system, which operates a 8.3-inch infotainment display that is situated in the centre of the dashboard.
Audi claims to have made significant improvements to ride comfort, with a newly developed five-link suspension and optional adaptive air suspension. Wind and noise has also been addressed with a new aerodynamically optimised roof.
Dealers will start taking orders from December 2016, with deliveries commencing in the spring. Audi hasn't confirmed any prices yet, but we expect the new Q5 to start in the region of £37,000.
