Geneva Motor Show 2017: SsangYong XAVL makes debut

SsangYong has previewed its next large SUV at the Geneva Motor Show 2017 with the reveal of the XAVL Concept.

The seven-seat Skoda Kodiaq rival will be larger and more efficient than the existing Rexton and could make it into production for mid-2018.

The production version of the XAVL will be powered by new engines - a 1.6-litre diesel or a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol, both available with a six-speed manual or an equivalent automatic. Both four-wheel drive and front-wheel drive versions will be available.

SsangYong tells us the XAVL is inspired by the Korando of the late 1990s, with the focus very much on all-terrain capability, although we suspect that the baffling XAVL tag – which stands for eXciting Authentic Vehicle Long SUV – will be dropped when the seven-seat SUV does make it into production.

Like the Skoda Kodiaq and Peugeot 5008, the XAVL will gets three rows of seats that fold away into the floor to provide van-rivalling load space. 

The interior has a 10.25-inch colour touchscreen and a wi-fi hotspot for passengers. The navigation, air conditioning and infotainment can be controlled through a smartphone app. Safety kit will include lane keep assist, a blind spot detection system and emergency braking.
