Geneva Motor Show 2016: Kia reveals Optima Sportswagon

Published 01 March 2016

Kia has debuted an estate version of the Optima in Geneva, called the Sportswagon and on sale at the end of 2016. Prices aren’t confirmed but should start around the £21,500 mark.

Kia says it’s based on the Sportspace concept, but that statement serves only to sex up the basic fact that this is an Optima with a hatchback and a bigger boot.  That boot is 553 litres, 48 bigger than the saloon’s, as well as outdoing the Mondeo estate by 53 litres. Take that, Ford.

Kia also confirms that the Sportswagon will have a 40/20/40 split-folding rear bench as standard, pop-up luggage rails and a powered tailgate.

Engines will comprise a 1.7-litre diesel with 134PS, a 2.0-litre CVVL petrol unit, and a 2.0-litre turbo petrol for GT models, although as the UK’s Optima saloon comes only with the diesel, it’s likely the Sportswagon will follow suit here too.

Other features include Apple Carplay, integrated into Kia’s latest infotainment system, which comes as standard.

Also on Kia’s stand is the Optima Plug-in Hybrid, which will come to the UK boasting just 37g/km average CO2 emissions. Powered by a petrol-electric setup that allows electric-only driving for 33 miles at up to 75mph, it goes on sale at the same time as the Optima Sportswagon – the latter months of 2016.
