Geneva Motor Show 2014: Volkswagen Scirocco facelift debuts

The revised Volkswagen Scirocco has been unveiled at Geneva. The changes on the outside are subtle with only slight styling tweaks - but the more important news is that it gets more efficient and powerful engines.

The most obvious changes are the revised headlights and LED tail lights, which are designed to bring the styling in line with other Volkswagen models like the current Golf. There is also a redesigned front bumper similar in style to that of the Golf GTI. Furthermore the boot handle is now integrated into the Volkswagen badge.

The engine line up consists of four petrol engines and two diesel engines. The entry level 1.4-litre petrol produces 125PS, up 3PS, while the previous 160PS 1.4-litre has been replaced by a 180PS 2.0-litre petrol. There’s also a 220PS 2.0-litre, while the Scirocco R gets a 280PS 2.0-litre engine – 15PS more powerful than before.

The diesel line-up includes 2.0-litre TDI units with a choice of 150PS or 184PS, with economy of up to 68.9mpg depending on trim level and transmission. Six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG automatic gearboxes are offered across both petrol and diesel engines, depending on power output and trim level.

The cabin hasn’t undergone too many changes, however the centre console now features a second set of dials, featuring boost pressure, oil temperature and a chronometer. This is an homage to the original Scirocco, which went on sale in 1974 – 40 years before the updated car. 

Order books open on 20 May, with first deliveries expected in September. Prices are expected to remain more or less the same, starting at around £20,500.
