Citroen C4 Cactus makes debut

The production version of the Citroen C4 Cactus has been unveiled at Geneva. The quirkily styled model is likely to rival vehicles like the Nissan Juke and Renault Captur when it goes on sale in the UK in late 2014. Prices aren't confirmed, but expect it to start at around £14,000.

The interesting design points towards the future direction of Citroen C-Line models, but there are no plans to stick with a small, medium and larger range of Cactus vehicles. Rather certain elements, like the split headlights and daytime running lights, will make their way onto upcoming cars like the next C4 or C5.

The C4 Cactus stands out as a unique design, with plenty of the quirkiness Citroen was once renowned for. A highlight is the air bump side protection, which is but like bubble wrap for parking dents. It's durable and scratch resistant and can be changed cheaply at a dealership.

Initially four colour variations for the air bump system will be available, but in all likelihood there'll be more to choose from in future. Clever details continue in the cabin, with a large top opening glovebox and bench style front seats. Unlike the case with most Citroen models, the glovebox will be full-sized for the UK - the fusebox has been relocated.

The cabin is very simply laid out, with easy to use controls and a digital speedometer. The centre stack is topped with a smart iPad style touchscreen. Upholstery is outside of the usual, with fluffier fabrics used in some places instead of the usual materials.

Engine wise there's a 100PS BlueHDI diesel, which manages to emit just 87g/km of CO2, plus a pair of petrol engines. One is a 110PS 1.2 THP petrol which emits 107g/km and the other is a 82PS 1.2 VTI. Though unconfirmed, there's a good chance the C4 Cactus will eventually get the HybridAir engine. This uses compressed air to assist the engine in much the same way as a hybrid does.

The C4 Cactus will be available to buy on a lease plan similar to the Peugeot Just Add Fuel scheme, which covers the cost of everything from insurance to maintenance and road tax. The only expense aside from the monthly lease bill would be fuel costs. Citroen is also planning a more customisable approach - buyers would get a bill based on mileage covered, a bit like a pay as you go mobile phone package.
