Ford Fiesta crowned Britain's best-selling car for 12th time

Published 06 January 2021

The Ford Fiesta took the number one spot in Britain’s best-selling new cars chart for 2020. The achievement marked the 12th successive year it had outsold all other models in the country.

More than 49,000 Ford Fiestas were sold last year, with nearly 1.3 million sold to customers in Britain since 2009. Ford was also Britain’s top-selling passenger vehicle brand in 2020, a position it has held for the past 44 consecutive years.

Other model highlights include the relatively new Ford Puma, which saw nearly 26,300 sold in its first year on sale.

The Ford Fiesta was the third best-selling car in December 2020, pipped by both the Tesla Model S and Volkswagen Golf. However, the Golf was sold in lower overall numbers (43,109) - falling behind the Fiesta (49,174) and Vauxhall Corsa (46,439) year-to-date.

“I want to thank our customers for continuing to show their confidence and trust in the Ford brand in what was an unprecedented difficult year,” said Lisa Brankin, managing director of Ford of Britain and Ireland.

“The new lockdown measures announced earlier this week mean there will be a slow start to the much-needed recovery in the new vehicle sales market as we begin 2021, though thankfully the UK-EU and UK-Turkey trade agreements signed just ahead of the new year have avoided an even worse potential situation. We hope that the current circumstances will have changed enough by the all-important March sales month to help give the industry the kick-start it needs."

Best-sellers in Britain, year-to-date:

Ford Fiesta 49,174
Vauxhall Corsa 46,439
Volkswagen Golf 43,109

Fiesta Corsa Golf Focus AClass ------------------
The best sellers BUT huge numbers are sold to Rental companies such as Avis, Hertz etc etc

Very few new cars in my street are in the top 10 - then again the neighbours are spending their own money.

It would be nice to see the top 10 cars that are bought privately rather company cars & day rentals.,

None of the top 5 are built in Britain. It's about time people realised that Foreign companies want your money but not prepared to invest in Britain.

I love the Vauxhall Corsa advert

Vauxhall a British company since 1903

Next generation Opel/Vauxhall Corsa will be produced exclusively in Zaragoza as of 2019, plus electric variant by 2020
Social framework agreement paves the way for sustainable future at Zaragoza site.

All you Corsa owners take note the UK will be the poorest country soon as no one is investing in it's future.

We will see how long the Ellesmere Port factory will stay open. Without the British Government pay in millions of pounds to keep it open.

Best thing the Government can do is to wait till Honda has gone and closed down. Then buy the site cheaply and find a company ideally Kia or Hyundai to go into joint ownership with and start producing small electric cars. Then the French and Germans can stick their cars. There is nothing wrong with competition. In todays robotic era we could make cars nearly as cheap as other countries and also reduce the unemployment. Nissan would be another company we should have our eye on.
