The vexed question of how to make the MINI more practical has been exercising its designers ever since the original was launched way back in 1959. More recently, the answer has been the five-door hatch model that arrived in 2014 alongside the third-generation three-door model. Crucially, those in the back seat get an extra 3cm of legroom and 1cm of headroom. Not much, but it makes a difference to space and comfort, and the five-door also has a bigger boot to turn it into more of a family-friendly supermini than merely a desirable trinket.
MINI has been very good at filling niches, even ones we never knew existed until it launched a model. It’s surprising, then, this company took as long to offer a five-door version of the popular hatch. Amazingly, it took until 2014 for the five-door hatch to arrive, some 13 years after the first of the new generation BMW-owned MINIs made its appearance.
While there are traditionalists who bridle at the idea of the MINI five-door hatch, there are plenty more people out there who have embraced it. This has made it one of the most popular MINI models and gives its perhaps better looking three-door sibling a good run for its money in the sales charts. Clearly, there are plenty of MINI fans who value a slice of practicality just as much as they do the style and lively drive of the car.
Even so, the five-door is not going to upset the class leaders such as the Volkswagen Polo, Ford Fiesta or Vauxhall Corsa for straightforward space. However, MINI has made the five-door longer and taller to create a much more usable cabin when you are carrying more than single passenger. Adults will welcome the extra space in particular as they can now fit without having to crick their necks and tuck knees under their ears.
There is also a larger boot in the five-door compared to the three-door Hatch, which is another blessed relief as you can now fit in more than a couple of shopping bags before resorting to dumping the rest on the back seat. At 278-litrs, the boot of the five-door isn’t huge, but at least it’s within the normal reference of a supermini.
Like some others in this class, MINI has now dropped its diesel engine offerings. The present line-up is powered by a pair of Twinpower turbo petrol motors, each offered in different power outputs depending on which model you go for.
The One and Cooper share a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine with 102PS for the base model and a sprightlier 136PS in the Cooper. We’d take the Cooper every time unless you are on a strict budget. Move up to the Cooper S and it has a 2.0-litre turbo petrol motor with 192PS to put it into the heart of compact hot hatch territory.
With any MINI, the appeal is as much about creating your own version of the car as it is about the more mundane practicalities of life. In this respect, the current MINI is much the same as those that went before it thanks to a raft of optional extras and upgrade packs for everything from the styling to the infotainment and even the way it handles.
This might not sell the MINI to those who simply want the most useful car for their needs, but there are lots of drivers out there who aspire to the MINI and the five-door removes concerns about practicality that the three-door poses.

MINI Hatch 5-door 2024: Handling and ride quality
We’d expect any MINI Hatch to deliver big on the handling and fun fronts. The One and Cooper models offer the greatest comfort and absorb crests and dips without compromising the controlled nature of the car.
The Cooper S has a firmer ride and comes with sports tuned suspension as standard. However, it’s still more than bearably good at dealing with rough roads and you can delete the stiffer suspension at no additional cost. If you want more say in the suspension’s set-up, you can have the optional Adaptive Suspension for £600. Helping the Cooper S to get the power down to the road without the front wheels shuffling for traction is Performance Control.
The handling has plenty of grip to make it fun and secure, even on slick wet roads, while the steering has more than enough feel and communication to keep keen drivers happy.
MINI Hatch 5-door 2024: Engines
A 1.5-litre petrol engine comes in 105- and 136PS forms for the One and Cooper, respectively. The Cooper is the better bet for its more rounded performance, and each can be had with six-speed manual or seven-speed auto gearboxes.
The Coopers model’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder motor has 192PS. It sees off 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds, so it’s swift.
MINI doesn’t offer a John Cooper Works version of the five-door and nor does it sell this model with Electric plug-in power, which seems like a missed opportunity to make the most of this model’s greater versatility to mix it with zero tailpipe emissions.
MINI Hatch 5-door 2024: Safety
A Euro NCAP score of 79 per cent for adult occupant safety is merely good rather than great for this class of car. Child occupant safety comes in at 73 per cent which is much more on a par with the MINI’s main rivals.
You do get ESP traction control, six airbags, plus in the back, there are Isofix child seat mounts fitted to both chairs.
All MINI Hatch models have Hill Assist and E-call. This will contact the emergency services in the event of a collision and the driver is unable to make that vital contact. Autonomous emergency braking is an option as part of the Driving Assistant System that adds £800 to the cost.

MINI Hatch 5-door 2024: Practicality
The MINI five-door has a low-set driving position, which some might find tough on the knees when getting out, but it’s comfortable for most people. There’s plenty of adjustment for the seat, including for height, and the steering wheel, so shuffling them about soon hones the driving position to your size and frame.
MINI has extended the wheelbase to make it longer overall, so there’s more room for rear seat passengers. You’ll notice this immediately with the extra space offered for adults’ knees, while headroom is also much better than in the three-door thanks to a higher roof line.
The MINI five-door’s boot offers 278-litres of space, which is at the smaller end of the supermini league table but much better than the three-door’s offering. The extra length of the five-door’s boot means you can simply put suitcases in rather than having to jiggle them to fit.
MINI Hatch 5-door 2024: Quality and finish
All of the materials in the MINI where its occupants’ come into contact with the car have a superior feel to its rivals.
Depending on whether you choose the Classic, Sport or Exclusive trims offered with some or all models, the MINI’s cabin becomes even more high end in feel with leather-trimmed sports seats.
Choose one or more of the various options packs and you can push this feeling even further. We’d recommend the panoramic sunroof as a wise choice to bring an airier feel to a cabin that can feel a little claustrophobic when decked out in dark colours.
MINI Hatch 5-door 2024: Infotainment
The 6.5-inch colour display is standard in all versions of the MINI Hatch. It works well with the steering wheel controls to operate the DAB digital radio or music from your smartphone that can be accessed using Bluetooth.
If you want integrated satellite navigation, you will need to fork out £900 for this option. To get the full suite of services that can be run through the MINI’s infotainment, though, you need to pay £2000 for the Navigation Plus Pack that uses a larger 8.8-inch screen. This serves up real-time traffic information and wireless phone charging. It also has Amazon Alexa included for hands-free voice control for many functions.

Early examples of this third generation MINI three-door hatch can be found easily from around £8000 with average mileages of 35,000 miles. This is for a One model, so if you upgrade to a Cooper you’ll pay closer to £9000, while the Cooper S will need you dig deeper for its £11,500 starting price.
Move to nearly new and discounts are rare, so expect to pay close to the list price unless the car has already covered quite a few miles. MINI has its own approved used car scheme, which makes it easer for potential buyers.
With new models, MINI offers a variety of finance offers, ranging from a personal contract plan through hire purchase to contract hire. All of these options can also have MINI’s service plans included so you pay for all routine service work as part of your monthly payment rather than when the car is at the dealer’s.
All cars sold in this way come with a 12-month used car warranty, roadside assistance and MoT cover. The car will also have a full pre-sale checkover by a MINI mechanic. You can also use MINI finance packages to pay for an approved used MINI.
MINI Hatch 5-door 2024: Running Costs
Using Real MPG figures, the MINI One comes in at 38.6mpg, so within shouting distance of the claimed number. With a 40-litre fuel tank, this means you should be able to cover up to 380 miles on a single fill in a One.
In the used market, the One D manages a Real MPG of 61.2mpg. Nowhere near its claimed 76.3mpg, but still useful if you have to cover big distances.
The premium approach of the MINI Hatch means the lowest insurance group rating it can manage is 13 for the One Classic. This might be just about bearable for a young driver, but group 20 for the Cooper and 28 for the Cooper S put them beyond the reach of anyone without some accrued no claims bonus.
First year VED rates for most MINI models fall into the 110-130g/km banding that will cost you £155 and then £150 for every year after that. However, the Cooper S with manual gearbox emits 141g/km, so you’ll be paying £215 for road tax in the first year.

When choosing a MINI, you first decide between One, Cooper and Cooper S to pick the engine, then choose a six-speed manual or seven speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
After that, you refine your decision by picking from Classic, Sport or Exclusive trims. All MINI Hatches come with air conditioning and 6.5-inch infotainment screen, while the S has its trademark bonnet scoop to set it apart. The Classic sits on 15-inch steel wheels for the One and alloy versions for the Cooper, while the S has 16-inchers. The S also has sports front seats and a leather-covered steering wheel.
Switch to Sport and you get 17-inch Works-style alloy wheels, body kit and rear spoiler, and sports front seats, steering wheel, anthracite headlining, cruise control and Performance Control added to the One and Cooper models. With the Exclusive, there are different 17-inch alloy wheels, MINI Yours steering wheel, leather sports seats and a Chrome Line interior. This version also has cruise control with brake function.

MINI Hatch five door launched
It’s the first time in the history of the brand that the Hatch has been offered with two rear doors, and the new model promises to combine the hallmark driving fun, distinctive character and refinement of its 3-door sibling with enhanced practicality.
This brand new model features enhanced interior comfort and practicality thanks to the extended wheelbase. Rear passengers now have 72 millimetres more legroom compared to the 3-door Hatch, while the increased space also provides room for a third seat in the back row. The two rear doors make access to the enhanced rear seating more comfortable.
The new model offers an additional 15 millimetres of headroom. Meanwhile, the car's interior width at elbow height also increases by 61 millimetres. The boot has a volume of 278 litres, up 67 litres or around 30 per cent compared to the 3-door Hatch.
The body of the new MINI Cooper 5-door Hatch and Cooper D 5-door Hatch is 3,982 millimetres long, 1,727 millimetres wide and 1,425 millimetres tall. This makes the MINI 5-door Hatch 161 millimetres longer and 11 millimetres taller than the 3-door MINI Hatch. The width remains unchanged. The wheelbase has been extended by 72 millimetres to 2,567 millimetres, while the track is identical to that of the 3-door model.
All MINI engines are balanced for fuel consumption and performance. At the UK launch of the MINI 5-door Hatch, the new Cooper D offers combined fuel economy of 78.5mpg while CO2 emissions start from 95g/km. The Cooper S Hatch can dispatch the sprint to 62mph in just 6.8 secs.
There are four engines with MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology to choose from. A three-cylinder petrol engine with a peak output of 136PS powers the MINI Cooper 5-door Hatch. The output of the four-cylinder petrol engine in the MINI Cooper S 5-door Hatch is 192PS. The new MINI Cooper D 5-door Hatch is powered by a 116PS three-cylinder diesel engine.
With the introduction of the new model, the MINI Cooper SD 5-door Hatch is presented for the first time with a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel power unit that has an output of 170PS. This highly capable new engine offers a perfect balance of exhilarating performance, with a 0-62mph time of 7.4 seconds, and frugal economy of 68.9mpg.
The new MINI 5-door Hatch comes with a six-speed manual transmission as standard featuring rev matching on downward shifts. A six-speed automatic transmission is available as an option on each engine.
The MINI 5-door Hatch features a high level of standard specification, including USB interface and Bluetooth, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, front fog lamps and onboard computer. Air-conditioning is available free of charge on all models.
The rear backrest with a 60:40 split can be folded down. This enables the load volume to be increased in stages as required, from 278 litres to as much as 941 litres. Numerous cupholders and cubby holes make it easy to take drinks and travel items in the car, and there is an additional storage compartment is optionally available behind the trim strip on the passenger side.
A storage package is also available as an option, and includes a double dual-section load compartment floor, additional lashing eyes and floor net for the luggage compartment, seats which can be angled more steeply so as to create more luggage space and map pouches for the backrests of the front seats.
Seats in a fabric/leather combination and leather finish are offered as an alternative to the standard fabric version. The MINI Cooper S 5-door Hatch and the MINI Cooper SD 5-door Hatch are fitted with sport seats as standard and these are also available as an option for the other variants. The sport seats offer excellent lateral support and adjustable thigh support.

Upgrades for MINI launched
LED headlights and foglights are now included in MINI’s flagship option pack, the MINI Chili Pack.
MINI customers will have the choice of two new option packs; MINI Tech Pack and MINI Yours Pack. Both of these packs allow drivers to customise their MINI for less.
Available on all MINI Hatch models, and the brand new MINI Convertible, the newly launched MINI Tech Pack includes MINI Head-Up-Display, a first for the small car segment. MINI Head-Up Display extends above the steering wheel, projecting the vehicle speed, media information or even satellite navigation instructions on an easy-to-read display. A rear-view reversing camera is included on models where it is not offered as standard.
MINI Head-Up Display is fully integrated with the 8.8 inch central display, also included in the Tech Pack, complete with 20g hardrive, 3D mapping and real-time traffic information. This also includes MINI Connected XL with its Journey Mate function, which allows drivers to map their journey with way points and reminders before even getting into the car.
MINI Connected is also fully compatible with Spotify, controlled directly via the MINI Controller. A 12-speaker Harman Kardon stereo system combines two under seat subwoofers with five mid-range speakers and five tweeters.

New gearbox introduced
7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission replaced 6-speed automatic. The DCT is operated by a newly designed electronic selector lever. This new selector lever always returns to its original position after changing between driving mode D, neutral position N and reverse mode.

New MINI logo, body finishes, Piano Black exterior and alloy wheel designs. Extended range of leather trim, new interior backlit surfaces and colour lines. MINI logo projection from the exterior mirror on the driver's side. New 7-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch and electronic shift selector. Further developed engines and increased capacity and torque for MINI One. (The 3-cylinder petrol engine in the MINI One has seen an increase in capacity to 1.5 litres, increasing maximum torque by 10 Nm, taking it to 190 Nm.)
Using the satellite navigation data and the car’s inbuilt camera systems, the stop/start can be intelligently controlled to identify situations in which it is better not to switch off the engine: for example when stopping briefly before making a turn or entering a roundabout, or if the traffic ahead has started moving again.

MINI gets new trim line-up
Classic, Sport and Exclusive are new styles, each offering increased standard specification and a shortcut to a distinctive interior and exterior character of their choice.
The range starts with Classic. This gets a 6.5-inch colour infotainment screen, intelligent emergency call, DAB digital radio and Bluetooth connectivity is standard on all models. Standard specification across the range has been enhanced with the introduction of Classic, which now also includes ambient lighting, exterior MINI logo projection and automatic headlights with rain sensor.
Sport models includes John Cooper Works Aerodynamic Kit and Spoiler, John Cooper Works Alloy Wheels, Sports Suspension, John Cooper Works Bucket Seats, John Cooper Works Steering Wheel and anthracite interior headliner. Sport models are available in combination with Cooper and Cooper S engines.
Exclusive builds on the Classic model specification with upgraded ‘Exclusive’ alloy wheels, chrome line exterior finish, MINI Yours Lounge leather upholstery, MINI Yours leather steering wheel, MINI Yours interior trim and interior chrome line finish. Exclusive models are available in combination with Cooper and Cooper S engines.

MINI range udpdated for 2021
The refreshed exterior of the MINI 3-Door Hatch, MINI Electric, MINI 5-Door Hatch and MINI Convertible models looks more modern, with more attention now focussed on the car’s central design features. The front-view is dominated by a larger radiator grille and its black, hexagonal surround, and the hallmark round MINI headlights. The position lights have been replaced by vertical air inlets to optimise aerodynamics and the central bumper strip is now in body colour, rather than black. The wheel arch has new contours, the side indicators have been redesigned to feature LED technology and at the back of the car, the fog light is now integrated into the rear apron as a narrow LED unit.
Adding to an expansive colour pallet, customers can now choose from three additional exterior body colours. Rooftop Grey is now available on all models, with customers also now able to choose Island Blue (previously only available on MINI Countryman) and the MINI Convertible gets an exclusive colour option with Zesty Yellow.
As part of the Piano Black Exterior option, the door handles, side scuttles, fuel cap, MINI logo on the bonnet and luggage compartment lid and model lettering and tailpipes of the exhaust system are now finished in high-gloss black, in addition to the surrounds of the headlights, radiator grille and rear lights.
Customers can also choose from five new wheels across all models, with Tentacle Spoke black design, Scissor Spoke (previously available on MINI Sidewalk Convertible only) and Pedal Spoke now being offered in 17-inch wheels. Pulse Spoke design and John Cooper Works wheels in Circuit Spoke black design are now offered in 18-inch options.
The redesigned interior of the MINI 3-Door Hatch, MINI Electric, MINI 5-Door Hatch and MINI Convertible is sophisticated and modern. An 8.8-inch colour touchscreen display and Piano Black high-gloss surface are now standard and the audio control unit and function buttons for hazard warning lights and driver assistance systems are integrated more harmoniously into the circular control unit.
Chrome elements have been significantly reduced throughout the interior with the two outer air outlets framed by black panels. The internal air vents have been completely redesigned and are now embedded to be flush with the interior surface.
A newly-designed sports leather steering wheel with multifunction buttons will be part of the standard equipment of all model variants of the MINI 3-Door Hatch, MINI Electric, MINI 5-Door Hatch and MINI Convertible. A new structure for the keypads optimises operation of the audio and telephone functions, voice control and driver assistance systems.
The digital display behind the steering wheel, already offered on the MINI John Cooper Works GP and MINI Electric, is now offered as standard on all new MINI 3-Door Hatch, MINI 5-Door Hatch and MINI Convertible models. The digital display in black panel design has a 5-inch diameter and shows key driving information, check-control messages and status displays of the driver assistance systems. In the MINI Electric, it also serves as a charging status indicator while connected to the power grid.
There is a choice of two colour schemes for the central instrument and digital cockpit displays, which can be selected in the control system menu. In "Lounge" mode, the content is displayed in a relaxing colour setting ranging between turquoise and petrol blue. If "Sport" mode is active, the screen backgrounds are red and anthracite.
The MINI Classic, Sport & Exclusive trim packages have also been extended, offering customers a wider choice of exterior body colours, safety features and upholstery. Sport models now offer Intelligent Adaptive Suspension as standard, Piano Black Exterior, Chilli Red body colour, additional John Cooper Works badging and Dinamica Leather upholstery. Rear Park Distance Control is also included as standard.
Customers choosing the Exclusive trim, will now benefit from Enigmatic Black exterior colour, Anthracite Headlining, Rear Park Distance Control and Driving Modes. The MINI Yours Union Jack Soft-top roof on the MINI Convertible is standard.
A handful of individual options have been added to the line-up for the MINI Electric, allowing customers to further personalise their choice of Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3. For customers selecting Level 2, they can now add Roof Rails, Active Cruise Controller and Sun Protection Glass, as well as the new Piano Black Exterior. Those opting for Level 3 also have the option of adding Satellite Grey Leather upholstery.
Powerful and efficient petrol engines with three or four cylinders constitute the drive portfolio for the MINI 3-Door Hatch, the MINI 5-Door Hatch and the MINI Convertible. Their MINI TwinPower Turbo technology is made up of a turbocharging unit integrated into the exhaust manifold, direct petrol injection and variable valve timing. The 3-cylinder engines, each with a capacity of 1.5 litres, are available in two versions, with outputs ranging from 75 kW/102 hp to 100 kW/136 hp. The 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine generates a maximum output of 131 kW/178 hp or 170 kW/231 hp in the two John Cooper Works models. Thanks to consistently optimised emission control technology, which includes a petrol engine particulate filter, all model variants comply with the Euro 6d emission standard.
The combustion engines of the MINI 3-Door Hatch, MINI 5-Door Hatch and MINI Convertible are combined with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard.

MINI Shadow Edition launched
Offered exclusively to the UK market, the Shadow Edition comes with a higher standard specification, focuses on blacked out features and edition-exclusive bonnet design and graphics.
The new Shadow Edition has a Midnight Black metallic exterior paint colour, with contrasting Silver roof and mirror caps and Piano Black Exterior, creating a dramatic and streamlined look.
Customers can choose an all-electric powertrain with the MINI Electric, or between Cooper and Cooper S engines, in both manual and automatic transmission on the MINI Hatch and MINI Convertible models
The Shadow Edition for MINI Hatch and Convertible is based on the Sport trim level, including 18” John Cooper Works Course Spoke alloy wheels, Silver roof and mirror caps, John Cooper Works aerodynamic kit including John Cooper Works spoiler, and LED front and rear lights.
The MINI Electric Shadow Edition is based on the Level 3 model and comes with 17” Tentacle Spoke alloy wheels as standard, alongside Piano Black Exterior and Midnight Black metallic roof and mirror caps.
All models benefit from special edition graphics on the bonnet, integrated scuttle trim and the A-panel, while MINI Hatch also includes the Shadow logo on the lower roof.
Inside, the Shadow Edition has Anthracite headlining and a Piano Black trim with both the dash trim and tread plates also featuring special graphics. John Cooper Works sport seats and a sports leather steering wheel with contrast stitching in Chili Red complete the interior design.
Continuing the high standard specification, the Shadow Edition comes equipped with an 8.8” infotainment screen with MINI Connected, Bluetooth with USB audio, Rain sensor and automatic headlight activation, LED headlights and rear lights and Intelligent emergency calling (E-Call). Comfort Pack, Comfort Plus Pack and Navigation Plus Pack, which includes Wireless Charging and Head Up Display, are all optional.

What to watch out for
Report of small issue with a 10,000 mile 2014/64 MINI Cooper S that developed into a big issue as a direct result of the MINI dealer's ineptitude. In October 2018, washer fluid showed low. Car was due for a service so owner reported it and saw the service manage write it down on the job sheet. Nothing was done. Owner booked the car in for the specific fault to be checked.
26-07-2019:Report of problem with horn button of 2014 MINI 5-door that first occurred whioe it was under warranty. Dealer cleaned the contacts. Problem reoccurred in October 2018 and dealer cleaned the contacts again. Then, in early July 2019 the horn started sounding by itself. Dealer diagnosis was that it needed an entire new steering wheel at a cost of £1,200. After owner challenged this, BMW/MINI UK agreed that owner woud only ahve to pay £200.
