MINI Countryman (2017 – 2024) Review
MINI Countryman (2017 – 2024) At A Glance
Insurance Groups are between 10–26
On average it achieves 69% of the official MPG figure
The second-generation MINI Countryman became the largest model in the MINI range when it was launched in 2017. As such, it offers plenty of practicality, matched with MINI’s usual idiosyncratic charm. However, this area of the market is very competitive, with a host of great small SUVs battling for sales including the new Nissan Juke, big-selling Ford Puma and value-focused Skoda Kamiq. Read on for our full MINI Countryman review.
Hopefully the world has moved beyond the ‘all MINIs should be small’ argument, and accepted that larger models like the MINI Countryman are here to stay.
As our MINI Countryman review will illustrate, the second-generation model is well established, and is set to be followed with a third-generation model late in 2023.
The current MINI Countryman has the cute and somewhat classic styling associated with the MINI brand. Some will find it overdesigned, but lots of others will love how this car looks.
Time has seen the MINI Countryman’s engine range rationalised and reduced. With diesel going out of fashion, there is now only a choice of petrol or plug-in hybrid power.
Given MINI’s emphasis on fun, all of these options are tuned with performance in mind. However, those wanting maximum engagement will be disappointed by the lack of a manual gearbox option.
Most will be perfectly happy with the range of automatic and dual-clutch auto transmissions fitted to the MINI Countryman range. Certain versions are combined with All4 all-wheel drive, although this is aimed more at aiding performance than delivering genuine off-road ability.
Despite its name, the MINI Countryman’s handling is targeted at the tarmac, rather than heading off-piste onto the dirt. All versions feel sporty, with quick steering and the ability to resist body roll well.
The downside is a ride that can range from taut to borderline uncomfortable, particularly on cars with big wheels and run-flat tyres. This can make for a bouncy experience for those inside, but at least they will have plenty of space to move around.
Being the biggest MINI means an interior with generous proportions, aided by the high roofline. Unlike some newer, coupe-styled crossover SUVs, there is no shortage of headroom in the back seats.
Boot capacity is competitive, at 450 litres (hybrid versions see this drop to 405 litres), while there is plenty of standard equipment fitted as well. MINI uses the BMW-sourced iDrive infotainment system here, with an effective 8.8-inch touchscreen included.
Classic specification now marks the starting point for the MINI Countryman range, and is likely to be the best option for balancing cost and equipment. Although there are numerous extra packages to personalise your MINI Countryman with, this can get expensive.
As with most things, the MINI Countryman can seem relatively costly to buy new. BMW has pushed the brand more upmarket, and prices have travelled northwards as well. Even the most basic MINI Countryman now costs more than £29,000, with a host of newer and cheaper rivals now available.
It leaves the MINI Countryman occupying territory between vehicles such as the Ford Puma, and premium models like the Volvo XC40 and Mercedes GLB.
Although it still has charm, the fast-paced nature of the SUV market means the MINI Countryman is starting to show its age. Competition from younger rivals, and the arrival of a new, third-generation MINI Countryman in the near future, make it a harder sell.

MINI Countryman (2017 – 2024) handling and engines
- Engines range from Cooper S E PHEV to Cooper S Steptronic
- Readers report Real MPG to be between 25–75 mpg
MINI Countryman (2017 – 2024): Handling and ride quality
Much of the MINI brand has been built around cars that are fun to drive. Despite being the biggest offering in the range, the MINI Countryman still manages to channel this vibe.
That’s no mean feat for a family-friendly SUV.
Compared to many of its rivals, the MINI Countryman offers a genuine sense of agility. Despite its raised ride height, it manages to handle without leaning too much through corners, aided by steering that is quick to react.
Naturally, it will never match the smaller MINI hatchback for engagement, but it proves that choosing an SUV does not always have to mean giving up on fun.
There is a sacrifice in ride comfort, however. All MINI Countryman models come with a stiff suspension set-up, meaning broken tarmac makes for a jarring ride. Adding bigger wheels makes things worse, as do the run-flat tyres.
Versions with the All4 all-wheel-drive system provide extra traction, delivering extra reassurance in poor weather conditions.
MINI Countryman (2017 – 2024): Engines
The MINI Countryman was previously offered with a selection of petrol and diesel engines. However, the passage of time has seen the diesel options discontinued, leaving only petrol power – along with the petrol/electric plug-in hybrid.
All engines come with an automatic transmission as standard, as part of MINI’s drive to simplify powertrain options.
The exact gearbox varies depending on the engine picked, but there is no option to add a three-pedal manual. All4 all-wheel drive can be specified for the Cooper S.
The 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged Cooper engine is familiar from a variety of other MINI and BMW products. It delivers 136PS, and sees the MINI Countryman accelerate from 0-62mph in 9.7 seconds. For most drivers, this will be the sweet spot in the range.
Moving up to the MINI Countryman Cooper S upgrades the engine to a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder unit. This sees power output boosted to 178PS, cutting the 0-62mph time to 7.4 seconds. Sadly, it never really feels this quick on the road.
In contrast, the MINI Countryman John Cooper Works seems just as rapid as the numbers suggest. A tuned 2.0-litre turbo engine offers 306PS, combined with All4 all-wheel drive. The result is a 0-62mph time of 5.1 seconds, with a top speed of 155mph.
The MINI Countryman Plug-in Hybrid combines a 125PS 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with a 95PS electric motor. This makes for a total output of 220PS, and can see the MINI Countryman PHEV accelerate from 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds.
With the petrol engine driving the front wheels, and the electric motor on the rear axle, the MINI Countryman Plug-in Hybrid also has all-wheel drive.
MINI Countryman (2017 – 2024): Safety
When the MINI Countryman was crash-tested by the Euro NCAP organisation, it received a maximum five-star rating for occupant protection.
All MINI Countryman models come equipped with automatic cruise control with a brake function, rear parking sensors, automatic headlights, automatic windscreen wipers and six airbags.
MINI Countryman (2017 – 2024): Towing
Although the MINI Countryman is not the largest SUV on the market, it could still be put to work for towing duties. A trailer tow hitch can be found on the factory options list.
The MINI Countryman Cooper S with All4 all-wheel drive can haul braked trailers of up to 1800kg. This is the same towing capacity as the high-performance MINI Countryman John Cooper Works model.

MINI Countryman (2017 – 2024): Practicality
As the biggest MINI around, the MINI Countryman offers plenty of practicality. Compared to its predecessor, the second-generation MINI Countryman feels far roomier on the inside, with more space for passengers and their luggage.
Anyone in the front of the MINI Countryman will have no reason to complain. The high roofline means there is lots of headroom for even the tallest adults.
The standard seats also offer lots of adjustment, and deliver a commanding view for the driver. This makes parking the MINI Countryman straightforward.
The MINI Countryman is a top performer for rear-seat passenger space, too. Legroom is close to the class best, while the same high roofline ensures adults can be accommodated without fuss.
In the plug-in hybrid version, the rear bench is raised slightly to help accommodate the batteries, but only the tallest adults will complain.
When it comes to boot space, the MINI Countryman offers a 450-litre luggage capacity with the rear seats in use. Folding the seats down, using a standard 40:20:40 split, unlocks the potential to carry up to 1390 litres of cargo.
Be aware that picking the MINI Countryman PHEV sees luggage space reduced. Space needed for the battery pack means boot capacity is reduced to 405 litres with the rear seats up.
MINI Countryman (2017 – 2024): Quality and finish
The interior design of the MINI Countryman will feel familiar to anyone who has spent time inside one of the brand’s latest offerings.
Its dashboard is dominated by a large, central 8.8-inch infotainment screen, with traditional climate control dials underneath.
There is just enough style to make the MINI Countryman feel more charming than other SUVs, and everything is finished to a high standard. Any cheaper plastics are hidden low down and out of the way.
MINI Countryman (2017 – 2024): Infotainment
All versions of the MINI Countryman now come equipped with an 8.8-inch multimedia touchscreen, mounted in the centre of the dashboard.
This is operated by the BMW-designed iDrive system, meaning a rotary controller on the centre console can be used, along with the touchscreen itself.
BMW’s iDrive set-up remains one of the best infotainment systems around, as it is quick to react and intuitive to use.
MINI has also added a compact digital instrument panel, but this offers only minimal information to the driver. The fuel gauge is particularly small and hard to read.
Satellite navigation is fitted as standard across all MINI Countryman models, and is combined with real-time traffic information updates.
Although Bluetooth and USB connections are included as standard, only Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility is available. This means Android Auto users are out of luck with the MINI Countryman.
An optional Premium Plus Pack adds a reversing camera and parking assistant to the display. On MINI Countryman Cooper S and PHEV models, this is extended to add a Harman Kardon sound system, while the MINI Countryman John Cooper Works flagship also gains a head-up display.
MINI Countryman (2017 – 2024) value for money
MINI Countryman (2017 – 2024): Prices
MINI has continued to push itself further upmarket, and the pricing of the MINI Countryman reflects this. At the time of writing, the cheapest Classic version now costs in excess of £29,000.
That makes it look very expensive when prices for a Nissan Juke start from less than £21,000. Both the Ford Puma and Skoda Kamiq comfortably undercut the MINI Countryman, too.
The cheapest MINI Countryman plug-in hybrid costs more than £38,000, while the high-performance MINI Countryman John Cooper Works clocks in at upwards of £40,000.
A lengthy options list can see prices escalate greatly. However, we think the standard specification in Classic trim should be sufficient for most needs.
MINI Countryman (2017 – 2024): Running Costs
Offsetting the MINI Countryman’s relatively high list price is the fact that the running costs should be fairly affordable.
Kicking off the petrol engine range is the 1.5-litre Cooper, which can deliver up to 44.1mpg.
Picking the more powerful 2.0-litre Cooper S petrol engine has only a minimal impact on fuel economy, with an official average of up to 43.5mpg.
Should you opt for the MINI Countryman Cooper S with All4 all-wheel drive, fuel consumption will drop slightly to an average of 39.8mpg.
To see how achievable these figures are on the road, be sure to check out our Real MPG submissions from actual MINI Countryman owners.
As you would expect, the MINI Countryman John Cooper Works is the weakest for fuel economy. However, a combined average of up to 36.7mpg is respectable given the spicy performance on offer.
Maximum efficiency comes with the MINI Countryman Plug-in Hybrid, though. Its combination of a petrol engine and an electric motor results in a sky-high official average fuel economy figure of up to 156.9mpg.
Such numbers rely on the 8.8kWh battery being kept more-or-less fully charged, with the car able to cover more than 30 miles on electric power alone.
Charging the battery should take around two-and-a-half hours with a home wallbox. MINI gives Plug-in Hybrid owners access to its MINI Charging service, too – it isn’t solely for electric cars.
Part of the MINI Countryman Plug-in Hybrid’s appeal will be a low Benefit-in-Kind company car tax bill. All versions attract a 14% BiK rate, compared to the 34-37% for the rest of the range.

Second generation MINI Countryman launched
The 2017 MINI Countryman is the biggest and most versatile model to be launched in the brand’s 57-year history. With its larger external dimensions, and increases in space throughout the cabin and luggage area, it offers occupants even greater comfort and a genuinely premium ambience. Useful new features such as electric tailgate control with touch-free opening and unique options, including a fold down picnic bench at the rear, add to the ownership experience.
For the first time MINI is offering a plug-in hybrid model with the new MINI Countryman ALL4 PHEV. Drawing from expertise gleaned from across the BMW Group, this new hybrid features a turbocharged petrol engine and an electric motor, reducing fuel consumption to 134.5 mpg yet also enabling a 0-62 mph time of just 6.9 seconds (details below).
The rest of the 2017 MINI Countryman line-up is powered by an all-new range of engines sourced from the latest MINI TwinPower Turbo generation, offering outstanding performance and efficiency. With between 136 – 192PS and 220-400Nm of torque, the new MINI Countryman can sprint from 0-62 mph in as little as 7.2 seconds, while fuel consumption reaches 64.2 mpg and emissions drop as low as 113g/km.
The 2017 MINI Countryman is available with both manual and Steptronic gearboxes and with front- and all-wheel drive. The latter, MINI’s ALL4 system, has been further refined for increased driving agility and efficiency.
Additions to the standard equipment list include MINI’s Satellite Navigation System, Bluetooth, Cruise Control, Emergency E-call and Active Guard among others. Naturally, being a MINI, there is broad scope for owners to personalise their new Countryman, with extensive colour and trim options, advanced technology features and a range of option packs that offer carefully selected items with significant cost savings for the customer. One such option is a new 8.8-inch touchscreen display as part of the MINI Navigation System XL, offering touchscreen multimedia and navigation control for the first time in a MINI.
The 2017 MINI Countryman is available to order at MINI franchises nationwide today starting at £22,465 for the Cooper Countryman, with the first UK deliveries in February 2017. Prices for the plug-in hybrid model will be announced in due course.

Both driver and front passenger benefit from extended head and shoulder space, while the adjustment range of the seats has also been extended. Electrical adjustment of the driver and front passenger seats is now an option, including a memory function on the driver's side.
The second row of seating now contains three fully-fledged seats, and the rear door openings have been enlarged, enabling easier entry and exit. In addition to overall interior width, leg space is now significantly more generous too, with an extra five centimetres of knee room over the previous model. The rear seats can be shifted back and forth by up to 13 cm, prioritising either passenger legroom or boot capacity depending on the situation. The folding rear backrest offers a 40 : 20 : 40 split and also provides a variable tilt angle so as to also offer either increased seating comfort or additional storage space at the rear.
The 2017 MINI Countryman also benefits from more storage for on-board items and increased overall cargo capacity both with the seats in position and when lowered. In both the front and rear doors there are pockets that hold one-litre beverage bottles and the centre console extending up to the instrument panel has an integrated storage compartment and two cup holders in front of the gear or selector lever. The MINI Controller and the switch for the electrical parking brake are also positioned on the centre console.
The luggage compartment volume is 450 litres and can be extended by folding the rear seats to a total of 1,309 litres. This constitutes a maximum increase of 220 litres as compared to the previous generation model.
The luggage area can be accessed via an optional electric tailgate with touch-free opening and closing possible in conjunction with Comfort Access. The optional storage package comprises a variable load floor, lashing eyes and tension straps and also a stainless steel insert on the loading sill. One unique option is the Picnic Bench – a flexible surface that folds out of the luggage compartment and provides seating for two people.
The 2017 MINI Countryman is available at launch with a choice of four new engines: two petrol-powered variants and two diesels. In addition, for the first time there will be a plug-in hybrid MINI, the Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 (see below).

MINI Countryman ALL4 PHEV launched
Available to order from March 2017 and in showrooms from June 2017, the new MINI Countryman ALL4 PHEV is priced from £31,585 OTR. On the road pricing does not include the government plug-in car grant.
The MINI Countryman ALL4 PHEV emits just 49g/km of CO2 and has an all electric range of 25 miles from the battery alone with electric only top speeds of 78mph. This means the car is eligible for the additional £2,500 Office for Low Emissions Government Grant.
The first plug-in hybrid model in the MINI product range offers sporty agility on the road as well as competency beyond the asphalt thanks to its intelligent all-wheel drive system. The MINI Countryman ALL4 hybrid system is made up of a 3-cylinder petrol engine with MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology and a synchronous electric motor. Together they generate a system output of 224PS enabling the car to sprint from standing to 62mph in 6.8 seconds.
The eDRIVE toggle switch enables the driver to continue to drive with only the electric engine beyond this point if preferred: in MAX eDRIVE mode the MINI Countryman ALL4 PHEV runs at up to 78mph free of local emissions. The electric range of the first MINI plug-in hybrid model is 25 miles.
The energy required for this is stored in a high-voltage lithium-ion battery. It can be charged at a conventional household socket or, for increased power input and reduced waiting times, at a wallbox or public charging station. Charging takes between 2:15 and 3:15 hours.
The MINI Countryman ALL4 PHEV combines its progressive drive system with the versatile space concept and hallmark brand style of the latest MINI model range. The battery is housed underneath the rear seat and flat load boot floor, minimising drawbacks to boot space and leg room. The luggage compartment volume of the hybrid model is 405 litres, which can be extended to as much as 1 275 litres with the rear backrests folded down.

The new Untamed Edition emphasises the adventurous nature of the MINI Countryman, with exclusive design and equipment features highlighting its robust look and off-road potential. The edition is available on the Cooper, Cooper S and Plug-In Hybrid variants.
On the exterior, the Untamed Edition has exclusive Momentum Grey metallic paintwork gives this MINI Countryman a unique appearance. Complementing the body colour, the lower air intake surround, air inserts in the front apron, side skirts, reflector inserts and the lower insert in the rear apron are also painted in metallic Momentum Grey. MINI brand logos on the bonnet and tailgate reveals are also finished in the body colour, as are the associated trim elements when ALL4 is specified.
Four diagonal stripes towards the bottom of the doors are highlighted in Frozen Bluestone. 18-inch alloy wheels in Untamed two-tone design with burnished surfaces have been developed exclusively for the edition. The roof rails and the headlight housings of the MINI Countryman Untamed Edition are also finished in black, along with the roof and exterior mirror caps. The Piano Black Exterior option, included in the equipment range of the edition, adds to the black design features including the grille surround, headlights, taillights, side scuttles, door handles, tailpipe trims, model lettering and, when specified, the ALL4 emblems on the front side panels.
Like the door sills, the side scuttles feature a graphic pattern inspired by a mountain landscape and the "Untamed” inscription. Corresponding lettering is also featured on the rear side windows. In addition to the inlays and the carrier plates of the side scuttles, the E logo on the tailgate of the Plug-In Hybrid is also in Frozen Bluestone.
Nature-inspired shades of green and blue dominate the interior design for the MINI Countryman Untamed Edition. The exclusive Highland Green colour is combined with blue and green contrast stitching on the surfaces of the sports seats in the MINI Yours Leather Lounge finish. MINI Yours Leather Lounge Carbon Black trim is also available as an alternative. The illuminated decorative trim in Frozen Bluestone is printed with a landscape pattern which is similar to the door sill trims. For the first time, a large graphic is used as a motif in this area of the interior, instead of a uniform structure. The "Untamed" lettering is also visible in the night design. The accent strips in the cockpit and on the centre console are painted in metallic Frozen Blue, whilst the door trim strips are in metallic Arctic Silver and the surrounds of the air vents in high-gloss black.
In addition, the MINI Countryman edition model features emblems with the "Untamed" lettering on the seats and in the bottom spoke of the Nappa sports leather steering wheel, floor mats with a three-dimensionally embossed landscape pattern in the style of the door sills and decorative trims and an anthracite-coloured roof lining. The characteristic graphic of the mountain landscape also adorns the discreet pins in the outer area of the seat backs in a stylised form. The Untamed Edition for the MINI Countryman also includes the MINI Driving Modes.
What to watch out for
Report of MINI Countryman, new in April 2017, now with 2,200 miles and regularly garaged found to have wet carpets in both front footwells with mould around the edges of the rubber mats. Back to the dealer for investigation (we'd suspect blocked bulkhead vent well drains). Unfortunately dealer attempts to source the leak were initially unsuccessful.
25-02-2018:Report of repeated failure of remote key of 2017/67 MINI Countryman firstly due to battery failure, secondly failed with new battery.
20-03-2018:Some MINI Countryman PHEVs were delivered without their home charge cables, but this has now been rectified. (Reason was a problem with KLE Charge Control Units.)
26-01-2019:Report of autonomous emergency brakes of 2018 MINI Countryman suddenly locking on and car skidding to the left. Apparently, steering wheel locked too. Might have been due to a bird flying across in front of the radar sensor.
09-07-2019:Report of malfuctioning "driving assistant pack" in new April 2019 MINI Countryman, costing an extra £800 and bringing the cost of the (leased) car to £32,000. "From the beginning, these safety features proven to be faulty, useless and unsafe." Owner reported the issue to his local BMW MINI approved dealer who took it for inspection. In his words, "I was treated with utter contempt over several days and the car was returned, with no inspection paperwork, verbally declared no fault found." He asked BMW UK HQ and BMW Alphabet for standard videos showing how a driver would know these systems are performing - both point blank refused. He asked the same of the dealer who supplied the car, and the dealer who inspected the car; neither have done so. He sent BMW Alphabet a letter of rejection asking that they take car back. They insist he has the car inspected again by another dealer, or by a court approved independent assessor (they offered to cover cost if faults found), and refuse to do anything until he does. The car is supposed to have collision detection and avoidance systems for both vehicles and pedestrians. Owner believes this does not work at all. Car has active cruise control which is supposed to keep a safe distance from vehicles ahead, intermittently it slows car down for no reason on empty roads, accelerates dangerously at cars in front, turns itself off. Owner subsequently had car inspected by Dunn Saw. All faults were demonstrated and Dunn Saw is writing a report. BMW then spoke to the owner afterwards and he is optimistic that a solution will be found.
29-08-2019:Report of delivery of new MINI Countryman PHEV delayed due to faulty KLE Charge Control Unit that needed to be replaced before the customer could drive the car away.
26-10-2019:Complaint of exaggerated problem reporting from satnav of 2018 MINI Countryman 1.5 DCT. Display "loves to show up two cones around a drain three miles ahead as a massive 'DANGER AHEAD' on the sat nav and, additionally putting a warning triangle relating to such an event in the main instrument display underneath the speedo. The first time this happened, I pulled over and consulted the hand-book as I thought there was a massive problem like low oil pressure."
03-01-2020:Report of tempered glass panoramic sunroof of 2018 MINI Cooper Countryman shattering when the driver's door was slammed shut. BMW dealer investigated and advised that this was not a warranty issue and should be covered by insurance. They have estimated the total cost of replacement as £4696.
30-06-2020:Report of yellow triangle service alert appearing on 2018 Countryman. The dealer service reception found a record of the alert on the key fob remote. The dealership now want to replace the steering wheel because of corrosion to connections.
18-07-2023:MINI Cooper S Countryman ALL4 on a 71 reg with only 12k miles came up with a generic drivetrain fault with lumpy tickover at low power. MINI eventually replaced all injectors but say they don't know the cause of their failure.
