MINI Convertible (2016 – 2024) Review
MINI Convertible (2016 – 2024) At A Glance
Insurance Groups are between 16–33
On average it achieves 76% of the official MPG figure
As a topless version of one of the most fashionable cars on the planet, it’s hard to see where the MINI Convertible could go wrong. Although the market isn’t littered with small drop-tops, the MINI Convertible is the only pint-size roofless wonder you could ever need, with space for four adults, fantastic handling and a vast array of personalisation options. Crucially, it’s as good to drive with the roof up as it is with the roof down, which makes it a genuine alternative to the standard MINI Hatch. If you dare to go topless, the MINI has you covered.
Is the MINI Convertible one of the coolest cars on the road? Much depends on the weather at the time, but you can always crank up the heating if things are a little too cool (ba-dum-tish).
This is a car you buy with your heart more than your head. Emotional rather than rational. Desirability over practicality. Taking these factors into account helps to justify the Convertible’s premium price over the MINI Hatch, not to mention its reduced practicality.
What do you get for your money? MINI’s acclaimed ‘go-kart’ handling, for a start, along with a strong image, a quality interior and more personalisation options than you can shake a stick at. Going through the list of options and accessories is part of the MINI experience. It might be expensive, but it’s central to the car’s appeal.
There are three core trim levels: Classic, Sport and Exclusive. In addition to these there’s a hardcore John Cooper Works model, which is the MINI Convertible to choose if you enjoy chasing hot hatchbacks with the roof down. It’s expensive and rather uncomfortable over pitted surfaces, but it offers a driving experience quite unlike any other car.
Not that the MINI Convertible has any direct rivals. The Fiat 500C is too small and isn’t a proper convertible, even if it does rival the MINI in terms of brand appeal.
Beyond that you’re looking at the likes of the Audi A3 Cabriolet and BMW 2 Series Convertible, which are too mature and grown-up to compete with the MINI.
Aside from the John Cooper Works, there are two engines to choose from: a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol in the Cooper and a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol in the Cooper S. We’d argue that the 1.5-litre engine offers the best blend of performance and economy, although some buyers will appreciate the refinement of the 2.0-litre.
It’s great to drive, regardless of whether the roof is up or down. Even if you don’t consider yourself to be a keen driver, you’ll appreciate the sharp steering, the bags of grip and the absence of body-roll. Opt for supersize alloy wheels and the ride quality suffers, so stick with the 15-inch or 16-inch rims.
Perhaps predictably, the MINI Convertible isn’t as practical as its tin-top sibling. Although there’s room in the cabin for four adults (just), you’ll probably use the back seats for additional storage, because space in the boot is limited, especially with the roof down. Ditch your friends or learn to travel light.
Overall, the MINI Convertible is one of the most appealing small cars on sale in 2020. It looks great, boasts a quality cabin, and drives as well as the standard hatchback. Yes, it’s expensive, but there are some seriously tempting PCP deals on offer, so you can own a MINI Convertible for the price of a compact crossover.
MINI Convertible (2016 – 2024) handling and engines
- Engines range from Cooper D to Cooper S Works Automatic
- Readers report Real MPG to be between 32–63 mpg
MINI Convertible (2016 – 2024): Handling and ride quality
Roof up or roof down, the MINI Convertible is as good to drive as its tin-top sibling. High praise, because removing a roof from a car tends to turn things to jelly.
It’s almost perfect, with loads of grip, a near-absence of body-roll and steering that’s sharp and precise. Put simply: it’s a lot of fun. We suspect you’ll want to slow down to enjoy the sun’s rays and the admiring glances as you make your way along the promenade or the trendy part of town.
The one fly in the ointment is the ride comfort, which is fine on the 15-inch wheels of the Cooper and 16-inch wheels of the Cooper S, but uncomfortable on the other models. The John Cooper Works is arguably too firm for daily use, while the 18-inch alloys are to be avoided if you value your spine.
MINI Convertible (2016 – 2024): Engines
Although 136PS from the 1.5-litre petrol might not seem like a lot, it’s perfectly adequate for daily use.
The 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine in the Cooper S is a tempting upgrade. Thanks to 192PS, it’s certainly quicker, but we’re not sure it warrants the additional expense. That said, there’s only a small penalty in terms of fuel economy and we do like the pop-popping exhaust.
Order a John Cooper Works and you’ll have fun chasing down hot hatchbacks and sports cars. It’s a hardcore monster and huge fun with the roof down. The 2.0-litre engine is tuned to deliver 231PS and the chassis is more than capable of getting the best from the powertrain. It’s fun, but only in small doses. A Cooper D diesel was available in the past, but has been removed from the range.
MINI Convertible (2016 – 2024): Safety
Although the MINI Convertible hasn’t been crash-tested by Euro NCAP, the MINI Hatch was awarded a four-star rating in 2014. The Convertible should be no less safe than the Hatch.
That’s because it’s fitted with a roll-over protection system, which comprises a pair of hoops that deploy from behind the seats if the car detects a potential incident. They appear in just 150 milliseconds.
You also get six airbags, hill assist, dynamic traction control and a tyre pressure monitoring system
MINI Convertible (2016 – 2024): Towing
Do you really want to tow something in a MINI Convertible? It’s not quite the image you’re after, is it? May we suggest taking a look at the MINI Countryman instead...

MINI Convertible (2016 – 2024): Practicality
MINI won’t thank us for opening this review with practicality, because this isn’t the MINI Convertible’s strongest hand. However, we do have a solution to the car’s practicality shortcomings.
Put simply, treat it as a two-seater. Although the MINI Convertible offers seating for four adults, it makes more sense if you use the back seats as space for additional luggage. With the roof up, the MINI Convertible offers 215 litres of luggage space, which is actually slightly more than you get in the standard MINI.
However, fold the roof down and you’re left with 160 litres of space, which isn’t enough. So, assuming there’s nobody in the back seats, use these for your suitcases and going-away bags. Job done. That said, you might need your rear-seat passengers to act as human reversing cameras, because visibility is severely restricted when the roof is down.
MINI Convertible (2016 – 2024): Quality and finish
The MINI doesn’t rely on a raft of options and accessories to feel like a premium product, which gives you the confidence to opt for one of the lesser trim levels.
All versions share the same insulated fabric roof, which opens in 18 seconds at speeds of up to 19mph. We’d argue that spending some money on optional extras will enhance the perceived quality of the MINI Convertible, which is probably a big deal in such an image-heavy car. You just need to work out what you must have and what you’d like to have.
MINI Convertible (2016 – 2024): Infotainment
All versions of the MINI Convertible feature a 6.5-inch infotainment screen as standard, which looks a little odd in the MINI’s traditional circular dashboard unit. The 8.8-inch widescreen display that forms part of the Navigation Plus pack looks better and features sat-nav and a host of additional features.
For around half the price, the Navigation pack offers Apple CarPlay, a ‘Visual Boost’ radio and the MINI Connected smartphone connectivity. Opting for the Comfort pack turns the central screen into a reversing camera, which will come in handy when the roof is down.
MINI Convertible (2016 – 2024) value for money
MINI Convertible (2016 – 2024): Prices
MINI Convertible prices start at a whisker over £20,000, so the entry-level drop-top is nearly £4000 more expensive than the entry-level tin-top. But that’s only half the story, because the wallet-friendly One version isn’t available on the MINI Convertible.
MINI simplified the Convertible range in October 2018, so it’s much easier to understand the core models. Classic is the entry-level trim, Sport makes it more, you guessed it, sporty, while the Exclusive trim adds a touch of luxury. This is before you start losing yourself in the forest of options and accessories.
Once you’ve selected a trim, it’s time to choose an engine. Cooper is the base engine, with the Cooper S delivering more poke. There’s also a standalone John Cooper Works version and, at the time of writing, a Sidewalk Edition.
There are too many prices to go through here, but you’ll pay a MINImum (sorry...) of £20,085 for a Convertible Classic, £22,685 for a Convertible Sport, or £22,685 for a Convertible Exclusive. Meanwhile, the Convertible Sidewalk Edition costs £34,965 and the John Cooper Works costs £29,250.
In general terms, an automatic transmission adds around £1500 to the cost of a MINI, while the difference between a Cooper and a Cooper S tends to be between £3000 and £4000. Spend an hour or so in a MINI dealer and we’re sure you’ll find a MINI Convertible to suit you.
Because the MINI Convertible is very good at holding its value, some of the PCP deals are extremely competitive. For example, a MINI Convertible Cooper Classic in Pepper White could cost £265 a month over four years. That’s after a deposit of £2000.
If you’re buying used, a 2016 MINI Convertible could cost as little as £10,000. You just have to hope that you share the same taste in options and accessories as the person who bought the car new
MINI Convertible (2016 – 2024): Running Costs
The 1.5-litre petrol engine in the Cooper should return between 41.5mpg and 44.8mpg, while the 2.0-litre petrol engine in the Cooper S has the potential to deliver 39.2mpg to 43.5mpg. This drops to 37.2mpg to 39.2mpg in the John Cooper Works.
Opting for the seven-speed automatic transmission will result in improved fuel economy and efficiency, which helps to offset the premium you’ll pay when buying new. Honest John Real MPG data shows that you can expect to see 40mpg in the Cooper and 35mpg in the Cooper S.
The price you’ll pay for Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) ‘showroom tax’ depends on the engine and transmission, but it costs as little as £175 for the majority of the cars. Some of the more powerful versions cost £540 in the first year, but all models drop to £150 in year two.
Insurance groups range from 21 to 33, which means the MINI Convertible is more expensive to insure than MINI Hatch (13 to 29). A small price to pay for a wind-in-your-hair MINI adventure.

You could spend a very long time going through the various trim levels, options and accessories. In many ways this is part of the fun of buying a MINI. Making a MINI Convertible your own is an experience we’d recommend.
However, we’d urge caution before splashing the cash. The MINI Convertible is so utterly charming in the ‘basic’ Cooper Classic configuration, you could find that you don’t need to fork out for a Cooper S or more expensive trim. Decide what you want from your MINI Convertible before spending an hour or so leafing through the options catalogue.

New MINI Convertible revealed
Features include a fully electric roof that is quieter and smoother than the previous model, a fully integrated rollover protection system and more rear space than ever before.
A striking new exterior and interior design ensures the new MINI Convertible is unmistakably MINI, whilst showcasing a blend of sporting flair and elegant dynamism.
The all-new MINI Cooper Convertible and Cooper D Convertible are 3,821 mm long, with the MINI Cooper S Convertible 3,850 mm long. All models are 1,727 mm wide, 1,415 mm high and have a wheelbase of 2,495 mm.
Those dimensions have increased compared with the outgoing model, with 98 mm extra length, 44 mm extra width and 1 mm extra height. The wheelbase is 28 mm longer and track width has also grown a further 42 mm at the front and 34 mm at the rear.
The increase in dimensions has enhanced comfort levels and freedom of movement in all four seats. The two front seats have a wider range of adjustment, while rear passengers benefit from easier access, more headroom, a longer seat surface and improved lateral support. The design of the new rear more clearly defines the two individual seats.
Day-to-day practicality has also improved. Smart design and interior packaging means luggage volume has expanded by around 25 per cent to 215 litres with the roof closed and 160 litres with it folded down.

MINI Resolute Edition announced
The MINI Resolute Edition is now available to order on the MINI 3-Door Hatch, MINI Electric, MINI 5-Door Hatch and MINI Convertible models.
Customers can tailor each new MINI edition to suit their personal needs and requirements, combining them with the available Comfort, Driver Assistance and Navigation equipment packages. Individual options such as Steptronic sport transmission, adaptive chassis, Harman Kardon HiFi speaker system or the panoramic glass roof can also be specified on the different models.
The MINI Resolute Edition's exclusive design features make up a carefully crafted package for premium exterior and interior style. They also tie in particularly harmoniously with the clear and purist MINI design language and reinforce the hallmark characteristics of the small MINI models.
On the exterior the edition has a traditional-style colour scheme in Rebel Green, previously available exclusively on the sportiest John Cooper Works models, combined with a Pepper White roof finish and exterior mirror caps on the MINI 3-Door Hatch, MINI Electric and MINI 5-Door Hatch. On the MINI Convertible Resolute Edition, the soft top and exterior mirror caps are finished in black. All chrome elements are removed on the outside, which will be standard on future MINI models.
Hallmark design features are finished in exclusive Resolute Bronze. This includes the headlight surrounds, radiator grille, rear lights, side scuttles, door handles and tailgate. On the MINI Cooper S, the air intakes in the front apron and the fuel cap are also bronze. The brand logos and model lettering provide a Piano Black contrast across all models. On the MINI Cooper S, the inner frame of the radiator grille, tailpipe trim and horizontal radiator grille strut are also Piano Black. On the MINI 3-Door Hatch, MINI Electric and MINI 5-Door Hatch, there is also a Black Waistline Finisher that runs along the lower edge of the windows.
The bonnet stripes and door sill panels of the edition vehicle feature a pattern of parallel lines with a gold colour gradient and the lettering "RESOLUTE". The subtle sporty appearance of the edition is completed with 18-inch alloy wheels in the Pulse Spoke Black design. The MINI Electric features 17-inch alloy wheels in Electric Collection Spoke design. 17-inch alloy wheels in Tentacle Spoke Black design are also offered across all models.
The exclusive interior of the Resolute Edition models is enhanced by sports seats in Black Pearl / Light Chequered fabric/leatherette, which are combined with black armrests and knee rolls. This colour scheme harmonises with the Rebel Green paint finish and the black and gold exterior design features. The MINI Yours Leather Lounge option is available on request in Carbon Black with striking stitching and piping and a perforated Union Jack motif on the headrests. The Nappa sports leather steering wheel has an edition emblem on the lower spoke, and the roofliner of the MINI 3-Door Hatch, MINI Electric and MINI 5-Door Hatch is in anthracite.
The interior surfaces on the Resolute Edition emphasise the cars’ premium style. Parallel and evenly curved lines in a light shade of gold form a pinstripe pattern on the black background of the surfaces, reflecting the pattern of the bonnet stripes. These design features are highlighted with interior LED lighting and the Ambient Light package, which has a laser-engraved ring around the central instrument, light piping in the doors and cockpit area and illuminated door handles and door entry. The MINI Driving Modes are also included as part of the edition equipment package.
The classic sporty flair of the colours and materials on the interior is combined with advanced digital technology. The latest generation of the MINI operating system optimises the quick and intuitive control of vehicle functions, audio programme, communication, navigation and apps. Live widgets on the 8.-inch touch display of the central instrument are used to activate each menu item, which can be selected by swiping.
