Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2016 – 2023) Review
Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2016 – 2023) At A Glance
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been a key contender in the executive saloon sphere for decades. The latest model, now getting on a bit having launched in 2016 but still very competitive, is as high-tech, comfortable, spacious and classy as it's ever been. The huge choice of engines - including both diesel and petrol plug-in hybrids - means there's something for both fleet and private buyers, too. Click through our Mercedes E-Class review for the full story.
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is an institution, but one that is a little less dominant than it used to be thanks to the rise of premium SUVs and a wider choice than ever of luxury models. But it's still a superb all-rounder offering something for everyone.
It has to be noted that the E-Class comes with an extremely broad engine range, particularly with other firms now shrinking their ranges. There's everything from the efficient and affordable E220d all the way to the mightily fast and thirsty Mercedes-AMG E63.
There is also two plug-in hybrid models in the range, so the E-Class has one of the widest, most advanced offerings when it comes to propulsion. You also have a choice of rear- or four-wheel drive depending on the engine you choose, so the E-Class is taking the fight directly to the also very talented Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series on this front.
Further key competitors include the Jaguar XF and Lexus ES, if we're discounting the vast quantity of posh SUVs that buyers are flocking to as well.
Although the E220d diesel is as talented as ever, managing strong refinement for a four-cylinder combined with good real-world efficiency. But both company car users and private buyers are moving away from diesels - happily the entry-level petrols also do a stellar job.
If more pace is required, the six-cylinder diesel in the E300 d offers huge low-rev pick up or you could go the whole hog with the impressively swift and smooth E400 d.
The again, more people will be looking to the plug-in hybrid model offered with the E300 de EQ. It produces carbon dioxide emissions as low as 34g/km. It can travel up to 32.9 miles on battery power alone, which is more than enough for most urban commutes to be completed with zero tail-pipe emissions. It's a nice stepping stone to the future of electric cars.
The Mercedes E-Class has a very classy and elegant cabin, with cool ambient lighting allowing you to customise the feel inside. Quality is excellent, too - everything feels expensively trimmed and even the man-made leather is pretty convincing.
Despite being generously equipped across its various trim levels, the E-Class (like many executive models) requires you to delve into the options list for the more sophisticated equipment. Still, many models now have the twin-screen panoramic infotainment display as standard, while you can opt for kit such as remote parking too.
All of this clever stuff is underpinned by the E-Class getting the basics spot on, so it’s still a comfortable, roomy and very classy executive saloon. It's not quite the consummate all-rounder that the BMW 5 Series is, however.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2016 – 2023) handling and engines
- Engines range from E 200 d Automatic to AMG E 63 S
- Readers report Real MPG to be between 21–72 mpg
Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2016 – 2023): Handling and ride quality
The optional Air Body Control air suspension endows the E-Class with a truly magic carpet and is worth paying for. The standard Agility Control suspension with Dynamic Select for the damping lets you choose between ECO, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual settings. On most roads, most of the time, the Comfort mode is the one to stick with.
Wheel choice affects the ride quality of the E-Class, so we’d stay on standard 17-inch wheels for the big-selling E220 d and have the smoothest driving experience.
Where the E-Class does fall down is when it comes to cornering agility and enjoyment. Saloon cars need to excel here if they're to offer a viable alternative to SUVs. The E-Class is relatively balanced and composed, but its bias towards softness means it can't compete with either the 5 Series or the XF on that front.
The steering is light and lacks sharpness, and the body leans over quite a bit in hard cornering. Even in selectable Sport mode, which firms things up, there’s a distinct feeling that the E-Class doesn’t really want to be driven with gusto.
Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2016 – 2023): Engines
The 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engines in the E220 d and the 300 d are near silent at 70-80mph, both settling at well under 2000rpm thanks to the a nine-speed automatic gearbox that is used in every version of the E-Class. The hybrid E300 de EQ uses this engine too but coupled to a 122PS electric motor for rapid performance and low emissions and fuel consumption.
Move to the E350 d and 400 d and they share a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbodiesel with immense power and shove for relaxed cruising and muscular overtaking ability.
Petrol fans are well catered for with the E200’s 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder engine with 184PS. The 300 e uses the same engine but hybrid electric motor, while the 300 de combines diesel and electric motors. The E450 has a 3.0-litre turbo V6 motor and the AMG models use the 435PS 3.0-litre unit in the E53 or a thumping 612PS twin-turbo 4.0litre V8 in the E63.
Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2016 – 2023): Safety
Every Mercedes E-Class comes with dual front, side and curtain airbags, as well as a separate ’bag for the driver’s knees. They also all have cruise control with speed limiter, tyre pressure monitoring system, and Attention Assist.
Blind Spot Assist is common to every model, along with front and rear parking sensors, reversing camera, autonomous emergency braking, and an Active Bonnet that pops up in a collision to better protect pedestrians if they come into contact with the car. However, SE and AMG Line Hybrid models do not get Traffic Sign Assist included in their list price.
The E-Class received a full five stars from Euro NCAP when it was tested in 2016. Despite the test becoming stricter since, the car's safety kit tally has increased to match that.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2016 – 2023): Practicality
Sure, the E-Class can compete on the tech front with its large infotainment screen, but it also serves up masses of leg, shoulder and headroom, along with a whole host of adjustment for the driver's seat and wheel. This is completed with partial electric movement, while the steering wheel also moves for height and depth.
The wide rear bench has more than enough width for three kids and even a trio of adults will fit without banging elbows too much. The 5 Series and A6 are ever so slightly more spacious, but it's mainly headroom where the E-Class is only slightly lacking.
The Mercedes E-Class' boot capacity of 540 litres is pretty strong. That puts it ahead of the BMW 5 Series by a margin of 10-litres and the Mercedes also scores with a long, flat floor.
The Mercedes E-Class's external dimensions give it a length of 4,935mm, a width of 1,852mm and a height of 1,460mm. That makes it marginally smaller in every dimensions than the 5 Series.
Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2016 – 2023): Quality and finish
In the E-Class, this impression is more than justified as the attention to detail and quality of build is second to none. Even six years on from launch it feels like a cut above.
It means the fit and finish of the E-Class is a source of much pleasure to its owners and the materials used are also of a very high grade. On some models, the seat upholstery is a man-made hide, which Mercedes has been using for decades.
Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2016 – 2023): Infotainment
It’s disappointing the E-Class doesn’t come with the large infotainment screen as standard on every model. If you do get it, you’ll enjoy two HD 12.3-inch widescreens, housed in a shared casing. One replaces the traditional instrument binnacle and floods the driver with clear, well-presented information.
If the setup has a weakness, it’s that the graphics are occasionally lacklustre and the COMAND rotary control system, as refined as it’s become since its clunky first outings, is still a fundamentally flawed way of navigating the screens, like drawing with an Etch-A-Sketch when really you just want to put a pencil to the screen itself. However, the Mercedes me connect voice control is simple to use. Happily, updated versions use an advanced voice control system too.
Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2016 – 2023) value for money
Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2016 – 2023): Prices
Like many executive saloons the E-Class doesn't hold its value particularly well. It probably doesn't help that so many end up serving as high-end taxis and private hire vehicles. A four-year old Mercedes E220 d can be yours from around £17,000 for one with 40,000 miles on the clock.
There are others out there that are markedly cheaper but with much higher mileages as the E-Class can shrug of plenty of miles with ease.
Look for a nearly new or pre-registered version of the E220 d and you will need to spend around £35,000 for an AMG Line Edition Premium with less than 5000 miles under its belt. That is a saving of about £7500 on the list price of a brand-new model.
Mercedes offers its own approved used cars and there are generally plenty of E-Class models to choose from within the firm’s dealer ranks. All approved used Mercedes cars come with a year’s unlimited mileage warranty and roadside assistance.
There are a variety of ways to fund a new or used E-Class from Mercedes dealers, including the firm’s Agility personal contract plan, contract hire, an operating lease, and hire purchase for private buyers. There are also deals for business users.
Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2016 – 2023): Running Costs
Real MPG figures show that the E220d is able to offer 50.6mpg in everyday driving, which is impressive for a car of this size and weight. The 300de is the best of the hybrid and provides a claimed best of 217.3mpg.
The cheapest Mercedes E-Class to get insurance cover for is the petrol-powered E200, which sits in group 28 in SE trim, or group 29 as an AMG Line model. Choose the popular E220 d and it’s in group 31 in either trim. At the other end of the insurance scale is the AMG E63 that manages to avoid the top bracket by sitting in group 47, or group 49 if you take it with all the options packs.
The hybrid versions of the Mercedes E-Class pay £10 in the first year and only £155 in subsequent years. The E200 d will cost you £190 for the first 12 months’ road tax and £165 for the following years. The most expensive of the lot is the AMG E63 that attracts a painful first yearly payment of £2365.
Bear in mind all of these models will also attract a further 'premium car' tax of £355 in the first year because their list prices are over £40k.

New Mercedes-Benz E-Class revealed
The new E-Class will come with a choice of two engines at market launch: the E 200 with a four-cylinder petrol engine and the E 220 d with an all-new four-cylinder diesel engine. In the UK the range will start with the E 220 d.
A further highlight of the new E-Class is its seats. Their ergonomic, sculptural form combines Mercedes-Benz’s hallmark suitability for long journeys with a refined, sporty look, featuring a unique design for each line. Another new feature in this segment is a Heat Comfort package including heated armrests in the doors and on the centre console.
The rear bench seat in the new E-Class Saloon comes with the option of a three-piece backrest with a 40/20/40 split. Integral features of the centre armrest include a stowage box and two pop-out drinks holders. There is also the option of a holder for a tablet PC for the rear passengers.
The E 350 e features hybrid technology and the Plug-In Hybrid allows around 30 kilometres of purely electric driving. Its four-cylinder petrol engine, in conjunction with a powerful electric motor, gives it a total system output of 279PS with a system torque of 600Nm.
The most powerful diesel variant will boast a six-cylinder engine incorporating advanced SCR exhaust technology, with an output of 258PS and a peak torque of 620Nm.
Another variant to join the range will be the E 400 4MATIC whose six-cylinder petrol engine has an output of 333PS and a maximum torque of 480Nm. This model is not currently planned for the UK.
Further variants will later complete the engine range, including a new four-cylinder diesel unit developing 150PS. The range of petrol engines will comprise four-cylinder versions with outputs ranging from 183PS to 245PS plus a six-cylinder variant developing 333PS.
All models available at market launch are equipped with the new 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission as standard. It enables fast gear changes and allows low engine revs, which has a particularly beneficial effect on efficiency and noise levels.
The suspension on the new E-Class offers agile driving pleasure on twisting roads as well as the highest level of ride comfort in this segment. The Saloon comes with steel suspension as standard. Three DIRECT CONTROL suspension systems with selective damping system are available in conjunction with this suspension:
- Comfort suspension
- Comfortable Avantgarde suspension with a sportier character,
lowered by 15 millimetres - Sporty suspension with adaptive damping adjustment, lowered
by 15 millimetres, which replaces the classic sports suspension
Alternatively the new E-Class can be equipped with multi-chamber air suspension all round – the only car in its segment to offer this option. Advantages of this system: Three chambers of different size in the spring struts of the rear axle and two in the spring struts of the front axle make it possible to control, in three stages, how stiffly the suspension reacts. In this way, the occupants enjoy soft base suspension, and the secure feeling of good handling stability as the speed increases.

E43 AMG 4Matic launched
On sale in September 2016, with two new turbochargers and corresponding software applications, the supercharged six-cylinder engine delivers an output of 401PS.
The 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission with shorter shift times, the retuned sports suspension based on the AIR BODY CONTROL air suspension and the more direct steering ratio also provide for signature AMG Driving Performance.
On the E 43 4MATIC, Mercedes-AMG has upgraded the six-cylinder engine's output by 34PS with the aid of two larger turbochargers and sophisticated software applications. The ample peak torque of 520Nm is available right from a low engine speed of 2500 rpm.
The new E 43 4MATIC reaches a speed of 62mph from a standing start in 4.6 seconds, while its top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.
