I am looking to buy a new family car to replace my ford focus.

I'm looking something around a year old, a bit bigger, decent boot size that will hold a folded pram. Something reasonably economical, possibly diesel for doing 15k miles a year.

Budget is 12.5k plus my car as a trade in, so say 13.5k total.

I have been looking at a Toyota avensis, Hyundai i40 - both saloons. Also looking at a Peugeot 3008.

Had been looking at kia sportage but too pricy a year old. Had looked at qashqai but boot space could be an issue.

I have been offered a leasing deal on a qashqai for 4 years, £220 a month with £666 deposit. Total cost over 4 years is £11,100.

How would this compare to buying a 1 year old avensis for example, for 13.5k, on partly on finance so total repayable is £14,550 after 4 years. How much would a 5 year old 2.0 TR D4D Avensis be worth with roughly 75k miles on it? 6 grand?

Just trying to work out which would make more sense, assuming the qashqai is big enough.

Anything else I should consider, had a test drive in an octavia but didn't like the interior.

Thanks for the help

At todays prices £5k to £6k for the 5 year old Avenisis looks about right.

The Avensis and i40 should have more room inside than the Qashqai - boot space and rear leg room, the i40 maybe a shade more? Both have 5 years warranties and Toyota have an excellent reputation for sticking by their warranties. of those two, I'd choose the car I felt happier driving in, comfort, noise, toys, looks, handling wherever your priorities lie.

At 15k miles a year you could maybe look for an economical petrol and avoid "potential" issues and wear and tear discussions with the warranty people over clogged dpfs, injectors, flywheels that afflict some used diesels. The Avensis 1.8 petrol is a decent motor, good economy and would cost you a chunk less to buy than an equivalent D4D.

If space is very important then maybe look at a (2 year old) Skoda Superb, better interior than the Octavia, more sound proofing, 1.4TSi petrol engine goes well, economy would take a bit of a hit but its a very big, comfy car with a decent dealer network. Somebody will no doubt be along with a shout for a Mondeo which wouldn't be a bad idea.

Have a 2010 Avensis Tourer 1.8 petrol. Very quiet, comfortable with excellent rear legroom and luggage space. Gets 38 mpg all the time without being gentle with it. Good value car nearly new and with 5 years manufacturers (not dealers) warranty which can be extended. Toyota also well known for no quibble warranty repairs should you be unlucky enough to need it. Reasonable dealer service costs especially when compared to the German products. Holds price well and at least comparable to other makes. Only gripe for me is electronic parking brake, used to it now but would still prefer a manual leaver.

Thanks for the helpful replies. Gonna look at the avensis- always had a hatch so worried about the boot space and folding seats, not that I used then much!

Is that an auto or a manual?

It's a CVT auto. Very smooth and with the sport mode and paddle shift too gives lots of options to accommodate your driving style.

1.4TSi petrol engine goes well

Interesting that. I've always made it a policy to avoid the undersize engine at the poverty spec end of the range on a big car. Usually they don't last as long as their larger siblings, often in a more "cooking" state of tune, due to being overstressed hauling a barge around.

Is this no longer a valid concern?

I'm not qualified to comment, some people say VAG pushed the limits on these small engines but it's early days. It can get a big heavy barge like a Superb to 60 in 10 seconds and on to 125 mph which is quite impressive. Same performance as the 2.0 CR diesel but 10mpg less, I expect the diesel would be better real world with better mid range acceleration etc but one wouldn't be within the OPs budget. I'd check out the price of an extended warranty as I would for any two year old car of this price with only a 3 year warranty.

I drove an Avensis 2010 1.8 tourer fully loaded boot I am getting 37mpg not hanging about. These are great engines in my opinion and do not have to be worked hard nice smooth progressive driving.
