VW Bora 1999 2.0 petrol - VW Bora Petrol Cuts out after 15-20 mins - brian@calshot

My first post is to be a positive one.

Searched all the forums to find a resolution of my problem,

They suggest: MAF sensor, Throttle body cleaning, Temp sensor, Crankshaft sensor and cam sensor and finally the coil pack.

Coil pack failed last year ..and it sort of degrades slowly with misfiring etc so discounting it :)

Heres what I know .. The Maf sensor can be disconnected and the ECU ignores it and goes to its default. So tried it and the engine still runs, when I get it to cut out ..doesnt matter whether it is still connected or not as will not start, so not going to default.

The temp sensor (there is possibly 2) ..2 pin and 4 pin, both can be disconnected and the car still runs, again like the MAF once i got it to cut out it doesnt restart whether it is still connected or not.

Throttle body cleaning ...this is cheap so I was hoping for this one, but alas didnt work, I suspect that if it was the issue there would be a drop in performance, rather than a complete failure.

So Im left with the crankshaft sensor £30 ish and the can sensor £60 ish ... the crankshaft sensor lives in a dirty place under the engine and works twice as hard as the cam sensor plus its twice the price so hoping its not that :)

So plan is to replace the temp sensor as its only £15 and the crank sensor tomorrow .. unlike so many others I will happily tell you if Im right :)

Out of all the components listed, only the crank sensor is a possible problem for cutting out.Have you thought about a diagnostic check?May make more sense than a "poke and hope"approach.hth

wheres the fun in that, plus the car has a few issues so I wouldnt expect a diagnostic test to show me anything new :)

In hindsight I agree with you but only a handfull of replies on the whole www. even mention the crank sensor, most go for the throttle body cleaning and the temp sensor .. so felt it was the right thing to mention them as possible faults.

As promised ...it turned out to be the crankshaft sensor.

I did get a temp sensor but didnt fit as supplied the wrong one :)

Crankshaft sensor is basically behind the oil filter ...unlike others that are apparently allen keyed mine had a 10mm bolt ...bit of a tart to get to, but I jacked up one side and 15 mins later fixed. Was extremely tight but a pair of pipe grips got it out.

Tools: 1 jack, 1 10mm deep socket, ratchet and pipe grips

I hope this helps someone :)
