Changing cars mid-policy - insurance confusion? - Sparkyq

Hi, Tommorow I get my old car taken away and put the replacement on the road, I have told my insurance policy to switch from my old one to my new one tommorow, however I cant specify a time it just goes in as 00.00 by default, I wont get my old car picked up till the afternoon and cos of the stupid SORN and car tax regs I can only retax my SORN car tommorow morning and I need to drive the old car to the post office to get the tax to make the SORN car driveable.

So am I insured on my old car until I start using the SORN one during that day of the switchover? Are effectively both insured, or am I stranded and having to taxi to the post office to get my tax disc..?

I cant find an answer on the insurers site or a google search, but am sure last time I switched that during the day of switchover both cars are insured.. am i right?

Many thanks for any advice

You're probably right about the day of transfer, though a phonecall to them wouldn't have gone amiss, just to get it sorted out. I recall when changing my car (at about 11am/mid-day) that my insurer could change them time when it transferred over, but had to be done over the phone.

If you're not driving your old car away, then you should have no problems if the new policy starts at midnight on Sunday - I had to drive up to Motorpoint's Derby premises from Hertfordshire to PX my old car and pickup the new one, so I waited until noon before driving away.

When it comes to insurance, always check with you're insurer over the phone - don't assume (especially using website - they're notoriously ambiguous about such things), given that if the police pull you over and you're not insured (even if via an oversight), you'll pick up at least 6 points and no excuses will do (as if you'd had an accident, you wouldn't be covered, nor would [if your fault] the no-fault other driver, who would have to pay for damage to their car.

Wrong.

That is all.

As you were.

wish i could phone em, problem with these online only insurers, 24h before they respond to a query by email, more like 48h..I'll just take the cab then to be safe doesnt sound like theres an overlap as standard

Last had this problem c 2000; maybe that rules practice have changed since.

Told inuserer (LV) that I was changing my 1989 Pug 205 for a brand new HDi 110 Xantia Estate. No trade in, I was selling the 205 privately. Paid modest difference in premium for newer and much faster car,

Had about a week's free overlap so I could drive either car on full cover. Thereafter 205 cost about £30/week on TPFT basis.
